Chapter 5 - Part 1

When I came home to West Egg that night I was afraid for a moment that my house was on fire. Two o’clock and the whole corner of the peninsula was blazing with light, which fell unreal on the shrubbery and made thin elongating glints upon the roadside wires. Turning a corner, I saw that it was Gatsby’s house, lit from tower to cellar.
At first I thought it was another party, a wild rout that had resolved itself into “hide-and-go-seek.” or “sardines-in-the-box.” with all the house thrown open to the game.
내가 타고온 택시가 신음소리를 내며 멀어지자 게츠비가 그의 잔디밭을 건너 내게 다가오는 걸 봤다.
"I've got to go to bed."
"잠자러 갈 참이었는데"
“All right.”
"좋아"
He waited, looking at me with suppressed eagerness.
그가 뭔가 참으며 나를 쳐다보며 (무슨말이든 하길)기다렸다.
"I talked with Miss Baker," I said after a moment. "I'm going to call up Daisy to-morrow and invite her over here to tea."
"베이커양과 얘기 했죠." 내가 잠시 후 말했다. "내일 데이지한테 전화해서 차마시러 오라고 할 참입니다"
"Oh, that's all right," he said carelessly. "I don't want to put you to any trouble."
"아 그거 좋네요." 그가 무심한 듯이 말했다. "당신이 어떤 문제에도 빠지게 하고 싶진 않아."
"What day would suit you?"
"당신은 언재가 좋겠습니까?"
"What day would suit YOU?" he corrected me quickly. "I don't want to put you to any trouble, you see."
"당신은 언재가 좋아?" 그는 재빨리 내말을 바로잡았다. "당신도 알다시피 문제에 휘말리게 하고 싶진 않아."
"How about the day after to-morrow?" He considered for a moment. Then, with reluctance:
"모레 점심때 어떨까?" 그가 잠시 고민했다. 그리곤 꺼리는 듯이,
"I want to get the grass cut," he said.
"잔디 깍으면 좋겠는데" 그가 말했다.
We both looked at the grass - there was a sharp line where my ragged lawn ended and the darker, well-kept expanse of his began. I suspected that he meant my grass.
우리는 둘다 잔디를 봤다. 내집 (마당의) 넝마같은 잔디(ragged lawn)와 잘정리된(well-kept) 그의 집 마당 사이에 뚜렸한 차이(sharp line)가 있었다. 그는 우리집 잔디를 말하는 것 같았다.
"사소한 것이 더 있지" 그가 불분명하게 말하고는 망설였다.
"Would you rather put it off for a few days?" I asked.
"몇일 더 연기할까요?" 내가 물었다.
"Oh, it isn't about that. At least -- " He fumbled with a series of beginnings. "Why, I thought - why, look here, old sport, you don't make much money, do you?"
"아, 그게 아니고. 적어도..." 그는 몇번의 말꺼내기에(=a series of beginnings) 더듬였다(fumble). "왜.. 내 상각에... 그러니까.., 이봐(look here), 친구. 당신은 벌이가 많지는 않지?"
"Not very much."
"많지는 않죠"
This seemed to reassure him and he continued more confidently.
이것(내가 돈을 많이 못번다는 것)이 그를 안심시키는 듯했고 그가 확신을 가진듯이 말을 이었다.
"I thought you didn't, if you'll pardon my - You see, I carry on a little business on the side, a sort of side line, you understand. And I thought that if you don't make very much - You’re selling bonds, aren't you, old sport?”
"내생각에, 당신이 양해를 해주면.... 알다시피 내가 가외로 하는일(business on the side)이 있는데(carry on business), 일테면(sort of) 부업인데, 당신도 이해 할거야. 당신의 벌이가 많지 않다면... 당신 채권을 팔잔아, 그렇지 친구?"
"Trying to."
"그러는 중이요"
"Well, this would interest you. It wouldn't take up much of your time and you might pick up a nice bit of money. It happens to be a rather confidential sort of thing."
"그럼, 당신이 관심 있을거야. 그게 당신의 시간을 많이 뺐지는 않을거요. 그리고 상당량의 돈을 쥘(pick up) 수 있어. 그게 하다보니(=happens to be) 약간 비밀스런(confidential) 일이야."
I realize now that under different circumstances that conversation might have been one of the crises of my life.
"울프샴과 일하자는게 아니오." 확실히 그는 내가 점심에서 나왔던 "연줄(=gonnegtion: 울프샴이 발음이 새서 한 말)"에 대해 꺼린다고 생각하는것 같았다. 하지만 나는 그가 틀렸다고 말해주고 싶었다.
He waited a moment longer, hoping I'd begin a conversation, but I was too absorbed to be responsive, so he went unwillingly home.
처음에 나는 또다른 파티인줄 알았다. 온 집이 그 게임에 맞겨져 야단스런 비밀집회(rout)가 술래잡기(hide-and-go-seek, sardines-in-the-box)로 옮겨가는(resolved itself into)중인 줄 알았다.
But there wasn’t a sound. Only wind in the trees, which blew the wires and made the lights go off and on again as if the house had winked into the darkness.
하지만 소음은 없었다. 나무에 바람만이 전선에 불었고(전선을 가르는 바람소리) 빛이 들어오고 나가는 듯했다. 마치 집이 어둠속에서 깜빡이는(wink) 것 같았다.

As my taxi groaned away I saw Gatsby walking toward me across his lawn.
내가 타고온 택시가 신음소리를 내며 멀어지자 게츠비가 그의 잔디밭을 건너 내게 다가오는 걸 봤다.
"Your place looks like the World’s Fair," I said.
"세계 축제 같은게 열렸나봐요?" 내가 말했다.
"Does it?" He turned his eyes toward it absently. "I have been glancing into some of the rooms. Let's go to Coney Island, old sport. In my car."
"그래요?" 그가 눈을 공허하게 향했다. "방을 살펴보는 중이었어. 코니 아일랜드[불밝힌 집=세계박람회장=놀이동산]에 갑시다 친구. 내차로."
"It's too late."
"너무 늦었잖아요."
"Well, suppose we take a plunge in the swimming-pool? I haven't made use of it all summer."
"그럼, 수영장에 빠져보는(plunge) 것 어때? 여름내내 사용해보질 못했네."
"세계 축제 같은게 열렸나봐요?" 내가 말했다.

"아 그거 좋네요." 그가 무심한 듯이 말했다. "당신이 어떤 문제에도 빠지게 하고 싶진 않아."

"There's another little thing," he said uncertainly, and hesitated.

"몇일 더 연기할까요?" 내가 물었다.
"Oh, it isn't about that. At least -- " He fumbled with a series of beginnings. "Why, I thought - why, look here, old sport, you don't make much money, do you?"
"아, 그게 아니고. 적어도..." 그는 몇번의 말꺼내기에(=a series of beginnings) 더듬였다(fumble). "왜.. 내 상각에... 그러니까.., 이봐(look here), 친구. 당신은 벌이가 많지는 않지?"
"Not very much."
"많지는 않죠"
This seemed to reassure him and he continued more confidently.
이것(내가 돈을 많이 못번다는 것)이 그를 안심시키는 듯했고 그가 확신을 가진듯이 말을 이었다.
"I thought you didn't, if you'll pardon my - You see, I carry on a little business on the side, a sort of side line, you understand. And I thought that if you don't make very much - You’re selling bonds, aren't you, old sport?”

지금에야 깨닳게 됐는데, 다른 상황하에서 라면(솔깃한 제안이긴 하다) 그런 대화는 분명 내 인생의 비극중 하나가 될 수도 있었을 것이다.
[이 글을 쓰는 시점에서 생각해보니 게츠비의 제안을 받아 들였더라면 암흑가에 말려 들었을지 모른다고 생각하니 끔찍했다.]
But, because the offer was obviously and tactlessly for a service to be rendered, I had no choice except to cut him off there.
하지만 그 제안[부업으로 돈되는 비밀스런 일을 하자는]은 분명히 그리고 섣불리(tactlessly=노골적으로) 어떤 일(for a service)에 대한 대가(to be rendered)일 것이므로 나는 그를 중단 시키는 것 외에 다른 선택이 없었다.
[데이지를 만나게 해주는 댓가가 아니라 "다른 상황하에서 라면" 솔깃한 제안이긴 하다.]
"I've got my hands full," I said. "I'm much obliged but I couldn't take on any more work."
"나는 손이 꽉찼어요(시간이 없다.)" 내가 말했다. "더이상 일을 맡을수 없어요"
"You wouldn't have to do any business with Wolfsheim." Evidently he thought that I was shying away from the "gonnegtion." mentioned at lunch, but I assured him he was wrong.
[데이지를 만나게 해주는 댓가가 아니라 "다른 상황하에서 라면" 솔깃한 제안이긴 하다.]
"I've got my hands full," I said. "I'm much obliged but I couldn't take on any more work."
"나는 손이 꽉찼어요(시간이 없다.)" 내가 말했다. "더이상 일을 맡을수 없어요"

[닉 역시 서부의 나름 명문가 출신인데 이런 제안을 받았다고 생각하니 여러 생각이 들었을 것이다.]
