담요에 쌓인 머틀 윌슨의 시신은 이어(~and~) 다른 담요에 싸여 있었다. 마치(as though) 그녀가 뜨거운 밤에 차가움에 고통받는 듣했다[주검의 창백함]/벽 옆의 작업 책상에 누워있다. 그리고 톰은 우리에게 등을 돌린채 움직임 없이 그위에 숙이고 있었다.
Next to him stood a motorcycle policeman taking down names with much sweat and correction in a little book.
그의 옆에 오토바이 경찰관이 많은 땀을 흘리며 작은 책에 이름을 받아적고 고치고 있었다. [첫 목격자 마이컬리스는 그리스식 이름이다.]
처음에 나는 높은 신음(groan) 소리들의 근원을 찾을 수 없었다/그 소리는 떠들썩하게(clamorously) 빈 정비소를 가로질러 울려나왔다(echoed). [정비소 전체에 울려 퍼지는 신음소리를 먼저 듣고] 이어서 나는 그의 사무실의 높여놓은 턱(threshold)에 서있는 윌슨을 봤다/양손으로 문의 양쪽 기둥을 잡고 앞뒤로 흔들며 (서있는 윌슨).
Some man was talking to him in a low voice and attempting, from time to time, to lay a hand on his shoulder, but Wilson neither heard nor saw. His eyes would drop slowly from the swinging light to the laden table by the wall, and then jerk back to the light again, and he gave out incessantly his high, horrible call:

곧이어(Presently : 이내, 곧=soon) 톰은 그의 머리를 획 들어(with jerk) 멍한(glazed : 멀건)눈으로 정비소를 둘러보더니 경찰관에게 의미없는(incoherent : 앞뒤가 안 맞는) 말들로 중얼거림(mumble)을 늘어놨다(addressed).
"M-a-y-." the policeman was saying, "-o ------"
"엠-에이-와이." 경찰관은 말하고 있었다, "-오 ------" [목격자의 이름을 받아 적는 중]
"No, r-." corrected the man, "M-a-v-r-o ------"
"아니, 알-" 그남자가 고쳐줬다. "엠-에이-브이-알-오 ...라구요"
"Listen to me!" muttered Tom fiercely.
"이봐요" 톰이 날카롭게 중얼거렸다.
"r" said the policeman, "o ------"
"알" 경찰관이 말했다 "오 ------" [경찰관은 톰에게 관심이 없다.]
"g ------" He looked up as Tom's broad hand fell sharply on his shoulder. "What you want, fella?"
"지 ------" 그(경찰관)는 톰의 넓은 손이 어깨에 급히 떨어지자[세게 치자] 올려다 봤다. "원하는게 뭐요?"
"What happened? -- that's what I want to know."
"무슨 일이오? 그게 내가 알고 싶은거요."
"Auto hit her. Ins'antly killed."

"Instantly killed," repeated Tom, staring.

"She ran out ina road. Son-of-a-bitch didn't even stopus car."

"There was two cars," said Michaelis, "one comin', one goin', see?"
"차가 두대 였어요" 미하일리스가 말했다. "한대는 오는 중이고 한대는 가는 중이고, 알겠죠?"
"Going where?" asked the policeman keenly.
"어디로 가는데?" 경찰관이 날카롭게 물었다.
"One goin' each way. Well, she." --his hand rose toward the blankets but stopped half way and fell to his side ---- ”she ran out there an' the one comin' from N'york knock right into her, goin' thirty or forty miles an hour."
"각각 자기 길로[서로 마주보며] 간거죠. 그러니까 그녀가..." 그의 손이 담요를 향해 들다가 반쯤에서 멈추고 옆구리로 떨어졌다[사체를 손으로 가르치려다가 그만두고]... "그녀가 저기서 달려 나왔고 뉴욕에서 오던 한대가 그녀에게 곧장 부디쳤어요, 시속 30 혹은 40 마일 쯤..."
"What's the name of this place here?" demanded the officer.
"이동네 이름이 뭐죠?" 경관이 물었다.
"Hasn't got any name."
"아직 없어요."
A pale well-dressed negro stepped near.

"It was a yellow car," he said, "big yellow car. New."

"No, but the car passed me down the road, going faster'n forty. Going fifty, sixty."

"Come here and let's have your name. Look out now. I want to get his name."
"이리와봐요. 당신 이름 대요. 비켜봐요(Look out now)[주변에 몰려든 구경꾼들을 물리침]. 그의 이름을 적어야 겠어."
Some words of this conversation must have reached Wilson, swaying in the office door, for suddenly a new theme found voice among his gasping cries:
몇마디 대화 말이 사무실 문(을 잡고) 흔들리던 윌슨에게 미쳤다/갑자기 새로운 주제(theme)가 숨막히는(gasping) 울음 사이에서 목소리를 찾아냈기 때문에.
[숨넘어가는 울음소리에서 갑자기 새로운 주제가 윌슨을 일깨웠다. 이전까지 윌슨은 그저 OMG만을 외치며 통곡할 뿐이었다. 그러다 사고 목격자가 하는 말을 듣자 갑자기 윌슨은 정신이 퍼뜩 들었다.]
"You don't have to tell me what kind of car it was! I know what kind of car it was!"
"당신은 그게 어떤 차인지 말하지 않아도 돼! 내가 그차가 어떤 차였는지 알아!"
Watching Tom, I saw the wad of muscle back of his shoulder tighten under his coat. He walked quickly over to Wilson and, standing in front of him, seized him firmly by the upper arms.

Only the negro and I were near enough to hear what he said, but the policeman caught something in the tone and looked over with truculent eyes.
그 흑인과 나만이 그(=톰)가 한 얘기를 제대로 들을 수 있을 만큼 가까이에 있었다. 하지만 경찰관은 뭔가 눈치를 챘다(caught something)/(톰의) 음정에서/그리고 미심쩍은(truculent : 반항적인, 약간 공격적인)눈으로 올려다봤다.
"What's all that?" he demanded.
"그게 다 뭔 소리요?" 그가 요구했다.
"I'm a friend of his." Tom turned his head but kept his hands firm on Wilson's body.
"내가 이사람 친구요" 톰이 그의 머리를 돌렸다/손은 윌슨의 몸을 움켜쥔채[윌슨이 딴소리 못하게 제압해 놓고 자기변명을 경찰에게 말한다.].
"그가 일을 저지른 차를 안다고 했는데... 그게 노란 차라고 했소." [톰은 자기가 운전 했다는 사실을 빼고 그저 차의 색깔 만을 확인해 준다. 결정적인 단서를 제공했지만 노란차의 주인이 누구인지 말하지 않음으로써 발뺌과 고자질의 부담에서 벗어나려는 중이다.]

Some dim impulse moved the policeman to look suspiciously at Tom.
약간 흐릿한(dim) 낌새(impulse : 충동, 자극)가 경찰관에게 이동해서 의심스럽게 톰을 바라보게 했다.
[이상한 낌새를 눈치챈 경찰이 톰을 향했다.]
"And what color's your car?"
"그럼 당신차 색깔은?"
"It's a blue car, a coupe."
"파란색 차요. 쿠페"
"We've come straight from New York," I said.
"우리는 방금 뉴욕에서 왔소" 내가 말했다.
[톰은 앞서 노란색 차였다며 윌슨을 다그치더니 사고 시간과 불일치하다며 알리바이 주장한다.]

Picking up Wilson like a doll, Tom carried him into the office, set him down in a chair, and came back.
톰은 윌슨을 인형처럼 추켜세워서(picking up) 의자에 앉혀놓고 되돌아왔다.
"If somebody'll come here and sit with him," he snapped authoritatively. He watched while the two men standing closest glanced at each other and went unwillingly into the room. Then Tom shut the door on them and came down the single step, his eyes avoiding the table. As he passed close to me he whispered: "Let's get out."

Self-consciously, with his authoritative arms breaking the way, we pushed through the still gathering crowd, passing a hurried doctor, case in hand, who had been sent for in wild hope half an hour ago.

Tom drove slowly until we were beyond the bend--then his foot came down hard, and the coupe raced along through the night. In a little while I heard a low husky sob, and saw that the tears were overflowing down his face.

The Buchanans' house floated suddenly toward us through the dark rustling trees. Tom stopped beside the porch and looked up at the second floor, where two windows bloomed with light among the vines.

"Daisy's home," he said. As we got out of the car he glanced at me and frowned slightly.

A change had come over him, and he spoke gravely, and with decision. As we walked across the moonlight gravel to the porch he disposed of the situation in a few brisk phrases.

I sat down for a few minutes with my head in my hands, until I heard the phone taken up inside and the butler's voice calling a taxi. Then I walked slowly down the drive away from the house, intending to wait by the gate.

I hadn't gone twenty yards when I heard my name and Gatsby stepped from between two bushes into the path. I must have felt pretty weird by that time, because I could think of nothing except the luminosity of his pink suit under the moon.

Somehow, that seemed a despicable occupation. For all I knew he was going to rob the house in a moment; I wouldn't have been surprised to see sinister faces, the faces of 'Wolfsheim's people,' behind him in the dark shrubbery.

He spoke as if Daisy's reaction was the only thing that mattered.

I disliked him so much by this time that I didn’t find it necessary to tell him he was wrong.

"Well, I tried to swing the wheel ----" He broke off, and suddenly I guessed at the truth.
"글쎄, 내가 핸들(wheel)을 돌리려고 했어.... " 그가 갑자기 멈춰서 내가 사실을 알아낸것 같았다[사고난 당시의 상황을 눈치챈것 같아 게츠비는 말을 갑자기 멈췄다].
"Was Daisy driving?"
"데이지가 운전했다는 거요?"
"Yes," he said after a moment, "but of course I'll say I was. You see, when we left New York she was very nervous and she thought it would steady her to drive--and this woman rushed out at us just as we were passing a car coming the other way. It all happened in a minute, but it seemed to me that she wanted to speak to us, thought we were somebody she knew.
"맞아." 그가 잠시후 말했다. "하지만 물론 내가 (운전)했다고 할참이지. 우리가 뉴욕을 떠날때 그녀가 아주 긴장해 있었고 그녀 생각에 운전을 하면 진정될 거라고(would steady) 생각했나봐...... 그리고 이여자가 우리한테 뛰어든거야(rushed out)/우리가 반대편(coming the other way) 차를 지나칠 참에. 모든게 순식간에 일어났지. 그런데 그여자가 우리한테 (뭔가)말하려는 것처럼 보였어. 우리가 그여자가 아는 누군가였을 거라고 여긴 모양이더군.
"Well, first Daisy turned away from the woman toward the other car, and then she lost her nerve and turned back. The second my hand reached the wheel I felt the shock--it must have killed her instantly."
"그런데, 처음에는 데이지가 그여자를 피해(turn away) 반대편 차를 향해 (핸들을) 트는거야. 그리고서는 정신줄을 놓고(lost her nerve; 겁이났다) 반대로 꺽은거지. [달려드는 여자를 피해 핸들을 꺽는 다는게 반대편에서 오는 차를 향했다가 놀라서 다시 꺽는다는게 결국 여자를 치었다.] 이어서(second) 내가 운전대를 잡자(reached wheel) 충격이 느껴지더군[여자가 부디치는 충격이 전해져 왔다.] 그여자는 즉사 했을 거야."
"It ripped her open ------"
"그여자 찢겨..... "
"그여자 찢겨..... "
"Don't tell me, old sport." He winced. “Anyhow—Daisy stepped on it. I tried to make her stop, but she couldn't, so I pulled on the emergency brake. Then she fell over into my lap and I drove on.
"더이상 말하지 말게, 친구." 그가 움찔했다. "그리고서 데이지는 밟았지(stepped on it). 내가 세우려고 했는데 그럴수 없었어. 할수없이 긴급 제동기를 당겼어. 그러자 그녀가 내 무릅에 쓰러지더군(fell over). 이후 내가 운전하고 왔지."

"그녀는 내일이면 괜찮아 질거야," 그가 곧(이어)(presently) 말했다. "나는 여기서 기다릴거야/ 그(톰)가 오늘 오후의 불쾌한 일로 그녀를 괴롭히는지 보려고. 그녀(데이지)는 방문을 잠그고 있지. 만일 그가 험하게 굴면(try any brutality) 불을 껏다 켤거야. [그러라고 시켰다.]"
"He won't touch her," I said. "He's not thinking about her."
"그는 그녀를 손대지 않을 걸세." 내가 말했다. "그는 그녀에 대해 생각하지 않아[그녀를 생각할 겨를이 없어.]"
"I don't trust him, old sport."
"나는 그를 믿을 수가 없어, 친구."
"How long are you going to wait?"
"얼마나 오래 있을거지?"
"All night, if necessary. Anyhow, till they all go to bed."
"필요하면 밤을 새야지. 적어도 그들이 잠자리에 들때까지."
A new point of view occurred to me. Suppose Tom found out that Daisy had been driving. He might think he saw a connection in it--he might think anything.
새로운 관점이 생겼다. [이 상황을 다르게 보게 됐다.] 만일 운전한 것이 데이지 라는걸 톰이 알게 되면 어떻게 될지. 그는 그것에 대해 새로운 생각을 할게 분명했다. 그는 뭐라도 할 것이다. [톰이 데이지가 교통사고의 주범이란 것을 알게 되면 무슨 짓이든 꾸밀 것이다.]
I looked at the house; there were two or three bright windows down-stairs and the pink glow from Daisy’s room on the second floor.
나는 집을 바라봤다. 아랫층에 두세개의 창이 밝혀있고 이층의 데이지 방에는 분홍빛이 났다.

"You wait here," I said. "I'll see if there's any sign of a commotion."

Daisy and Tom were sitting opposite each other at the kitchen table, with a plate of cold fried chicken between them, and two bottles of ale.
데이지와 톰은 부억 식탁을 마주보고 앉아있었다/(테이블에)식은 닭튀김과 에일(맥주) 두병을 두고서.

He was talking intently across the table at her, and in his earnestness his hand had fallen upon and covered her own. Once in a while she looked up at him and nodded in agreement.
톰이 골똘히(intently) 식탁 넘어 데이지에게 말을 하고 있었다. 그는 진심을 담아(earnestness) 그의 손을 그녀의 손위에 내려놓고 포갰다. 잠시 그녀가 그를 한번 보더니 동의로 끄덕였다.
[문틀(sill) 틈새(rift) 사이로 톰과 데이지가 뭘하는 지 볼 수 있었다. 그들이 거실이 아닌 다용도실에서, 어쩌면 은밀히 이야기를 하고 있다. 톰이 뭔가 제안을 하고 데이지는 그것에 동의했다. 이 광경을 보면서 닉에게는 데이지가 배신할 거라는 것, 게츠비를 측은히 여기게 되는 결정적인 전환점(new point of view)이 되었다.]
그들은 행복하지 않았다. 그리고 그들 누구도 통닥과 에일에는 손도 안댔다. 그렇다고 그들이 행복하지 않은것도 아니었다. 그 그림(장면)(the picture=음모)에 대해 누구라도(unmistakable : 오해의 여지가 없는) 자연스런 친밀감의 분위기가 있었다. 누가봐도 그둘은 공모하는 중이라고 말할 수 있었다.
As I tiptoed from the porch I heard my taxi feeling its way along the dark road toward the house. Gatsby was waiting where I had left him in the drive.
내가 살금살금(tiptoe) 건넜을 때 어둠속에서 집을 향해 오는 택시 소리를 들었다. 내가 길에 뒀던 그자리에서 나를 기다리고 있었다. [살펴보고 올테니 기다리라고 했던 그자리에 꼼짝않고 기다리고 있었다.]
"Is it all quiet up there?" he asked anxiously.
"거기 모두 별일 없지?" 그가 궁금해하며 물었다.
"Yes, it's all quiet." I hesitated. "You'd better come home and get some sleep."
"그렇소. 조용 합디다." 나는 망설였다. "당신 집에가서 좀 자는게 낳을텐데"
[사태를 지켜본 닉은 상황은 이미 기울었으니 게츠비에게 그만 가라고 말했다.]

He shook his head.
"I want to wait here till Daisy goes to bed. Good night, old sport."
"나는 데이지가 잠들 때까지 여기서 기다릴꺼요. 잘가요 친구."
He put his hands in his coat pockets and turned back eagerly to his scrutiny of the house, as though my presence marred the sacredness of the vigil. So I walked away and left him standing there in the moonlight--watching over nothing.
그는 두손을 외투 주머니에 넣고 집을 샅샅이 살피려고 단호하게 등을 돌렸다/내 존재가 경계(vigil)의 성스러움을 방해라도 하는 듯이. 그래서 나는 걸어나왔다/달빛아래 아무 의미도 없는[아무것도 모르는] 것에 경계를 하고 있는 사내를 남겨두고.
[톰과 데이지는 자신들의 과오(톰의 방탕함과 데이지의 추억)를 상쇄 시키고 뺑소니를 발뺌하려는 음모를 세우고 있는지도 모른채 개츠비는 데이지를 보호하겠다는 일념으로 달빛아래에서 밤을 샌다. 불쌍한 개츠비!]
