Simplify, simplify. Instead of three meals a day, if it be necessary eat but one; instead of a hundred dishes, five; and reduce other things in proportion.
겸손하라. 단순화하라. 하루에 세끼 대신 할수 만 있다면 한끼, 백개의 접시(화려한 식단)대신 다섯개-접시-(검소한 식단)에 맞춰 다른 것들도 줄이라.
Our life is like a German Confederacy, made up of petty states, with its boundary forever fluctuating, so that even a German cannot tell you how it is bounded at any moment.
우리의 삶은 (마치) 자잘한 소국들로 구성되어 그 경계가 끝없이 요동쳐(fluctuating) 독일인 조차 한 때도 그 경계를 말지 못하는 독일 연방 같다.
* 19세기말 독일 통일 이전의 형세가 어지간히 지리멸렬 했던듯. 우리 인생도 자잘한 사건들로 가득함.
The nation itself, with all its so called internal improvements, which, by the way, are all external and superficial, is just such an unwieldy and overgrown establishment, cluttered with furniture and tripped up by its own traps, ruined by luxury and heedless expense, by want of calculation and a worthy aim, as the million households in the land;
말하자면, 모두 외형적이고 피상적(superficial)인 (것에 불과한) 내적발전(internal improvement)이라고 하는 것이 전부인 국가 그자체는 거추장 스럽고(unwieldy) 과대하게 성장한 그리고 가구들(사회적 장치, 법제도-노예제도 같은-들)로 어지럽혀(cluttered) 스스로의 함정(자중지란)에 빠져버리고(tripped up) 가치있는 목표와 치밀한 계산이 결여(by want of) 된채 경솔한(heedless) 비용이 드는, 마치 이땅의 수많은 가재도구들 처럼(실용적이지 못한 장식품들), 사치에 의해 파괴되었던 것이다.
* 겉으로 보기에 내실을 갖춘 듯 하지만 실은 방만한 구조를 가진 근대국가에 대한 비판
그리고 그(방반한 조직)에 대한 유일한 해결은 그(국가)를 위한 (국가를 지탱할) 강고한(rigid) 경제와 스파르타식 삶의 검소함 그리고 보다 엄격함(stern)과 고양(elevation)된 목표(향상된 가치의 추구)에 있다.
Men think that it is essential that the Nation have commerce, and export ice, and talk through a telegraph, and ride thirty miles an hour, without a doubt, whether they do or not;but whether we should live like baboons or like men, is a little uncertain.
사람들은 그들이 하고 있건 말건 의심도 안하고 국가란 교역을 하고 얼음을 수출(19세기 얼음산업이 호황 이었음)하고 전신을 통해 소통하고(전신이 최신 통신수단이던 시절) 시속 40마일(요즘의 초고속열차 속도 쯤)로 달리는 (마차에)타야 한다고 생각한다. 하지만 우리가 원숭이(baboon)처럼 살아야 하는지 인간처럼 살아야 하는지에 대해서 조금도(a little) 의심하지 않는다(uncertain).
*자신들의 처지는 상관 없이 근대국가란 모름지기 어떻해야 한다는 말 만 앞세운다.
If we do not get out sleepers, and forge rails, and devote days and nights to the work, but go to tinkering upon our lives to improve them, who will build railroads?
만일 우리가 침목(sleeper)을 구해오지 않고 철로(rail)를 주조(forge)하지 않고, 밤낮을 일에 몰두하지 않고 단지 우리 인생을 국가를 개선한답시고 엄한데 쓴다면(tinkering, 서툴게 수선하기; 국가는 사회기반 시설을 확충해야 한다는 둥 말로만 떠드는 것) 누가 철길을 깔 것인가(말대신 몸소 일할 사람은 누구냐)?

And if railroads are not built, how shall we get to heaven in season?
그리고 만일 철길이 놓이지 않았다면 제때에(in season) 천국(말로만 떠들던 발전된 국가)에 이를 방법이 무었인가?
* 누군가 힘써 철길을 놓았기에 당신들이 떠들던 오늘날의 근대 국가가 되었다는 것을 잊었나?
But if we stay at home and mind our business, who will want railroads?
하지만 우리가 집에 머물고 우리의 사업(근대국가를 세우기)에 주저 한다면(mind) 누가 철길을 놓길 원했을까?
* 말만 앞세우고 계획만 가진 사람도 있었기에 철길을 놓게된 것도 사실이다.
We do not ride on the railroad; it rides upon us. Did you ever think what those sleepers are that underlie the railroad?
Each one is a man, an Irishman, or a Yankee man. The rails are laid on them, and they are covered with sand, and the cars run smoothly over them.
They are sound sleepers, I assure you. And every few years a new lot is laid down and run over; so that, if some have the pleasure of riding on a rail, others have the misfortune to be ridden upon.
그들(철길을 놓은 노동자들)은 견실한(sound) 침목들이라고 과감히 말할 수 있다. 몇년마다 새로운 수많은 (침목이) 깔리고 그위를 기차가 달린다. 만일 누군가 신나게 철길을 달린다면 다른 누군가는 그 밑에 깔리는 불운을 당했다.
And when they run over a man that is walking in his sleep, a supernumerary sleeper in the wrong position, and wake him up, they suddenly stop the cars, and make a hue and cry about it, as if this were an exception. I am glad to know that it takes a gang of men for every five miles to keep the sleepers down and level in their beds as it is, for this is a sign that they may sometime get up again.
그리고 (기차에 탄) 그들이 한 인간의 (노고를) 뭉개고 달리는 것은 잘못된 방향으로 침목(sleeper)을 허비하며(supernumerary) 꿈속을(sleep) 걷는 셈인데, (달리고 나서) 깨어났을 때(엄한 노선을 깔았다는 것을 알아차림), 갑자기 기차를 멈추고서는 마치 (자기가 사람을 친 것)은 어쩔수 없었다며(exception) 야단법석(hue and cry, 아비규환)을 떤다(사람 치어놓고 변명에 급급하다).
