Those who have not learned to read the ancient classics in the language in which they were written must have a very imperfect knowledge of the history of the human race;
고전을 쓰여진 언어로(원전으로) 읽기를 배우지 못한 사람들은 인간의 역사에 대한 이해가 아주 깊지 못하다(very imperfect).
for it is remarkable that no transcript of them has ever been made into any modern tongue, unless our civilization itself may be regarded as such a transcript.
우리의 문명 자체는 그런 번역으로 간주되지(be regarded as) 않는한(unless~) 어떤 현대의 말(언어)로도 그것(고전)들의 번역본이 없었다는 점이 확실하기 때문이다(remarkable).
* 현재의 우리 문명이 고전의 산물(고전의 번역본)이라고 한다면 몰라도 고전이 현대어로 번역된 적이 없다는 것을 감안한다면 현대인들은 인간의 역사에 대한 이해가 적다고 하겠다.

호머나 애쉴러스도 그렇고 버길 조차도 영어로 인쇄된 적이 없었다(고전의 의미가 제대로 전달되지 못했다는 비유 표현임), (그들의) 작품은 아침처럼 아름답고 완벽하고 잘 정제되었다.
for later writers, say what we will of their genius, have rarely, if ever, equalled the elaborate beauty and finish and the lifelong and heroic literary labors of the ancients.
* 고대의 작가들은 목숨을 걸고 전장을 누비며 대 서사시를 남겼다. 후대의 작가들에 대해 우리가 칭송하긴 하지만 고대의 작가들 처럼 문학에 헌신 했던 경우는 거의 없었다.
* say what we will of their genius(조건절): 우리가 그들(후대의 작가들)의 천재성을 말할 지도 모르나

They only talk of forgetting them who never knew them. It will be soon enough to forget them when we have the learning and the genius which will enable us to attend to and appreciate them.
* 고전은 우리가 읽어보기도 전에 멀리하게 만든다(이해하기 어렵고 재미없다는 편견). 고전을 이해할 교양을 쌓은 후에 고전을 멀리해도 좋다. 고전을 한번 이라도 읽어보고 재미없다거나 어렵다고 얘기하는게 어떨까.

That age will be rich indeed when those relics which we call Classics, and the still older and more than classic but even less known Scriptures of the nations, shall have still further accumulated, when the Vaticans shall be filled with Vedas and Zendavestas and Bibles, with Homers and Dantes and Shakspeares, and all the centuries to come shall have successively deposited their trophies in the forum of the world.

바티칸이 베다의 서(산스크립트 서)와 젠드 아베스타(조로아스터교 경전)과 성서, 호머와 단체 그리고 세익스피어로 채워질 때,
* 완고한 카톨릭의 성지에서 이교도의 경전, 기독교도의 작품, 세속작품들이 받아들여질 정도로 열린 세상
and all the centuries to come shall have successively deposited their trophies in the forum of the world.
그리고 세상의 토론장에서 그들의 트로피를 성공적으로 진열할 수 있는 신 세기가 도래하면, (그 시대는 실로 풍요로울 것이다)
By such a pile we may hope to scale heaven at last.
그 기둥을 발판으로(by~) 마침내 우리는 천국의 세상을 꿈꾼다(hope to scale~).

The works of the great poets have never yet been read by mankind, for only great poets can read them.
위대한 시인들 만이 그들을 읽을 수 있기에 위대한 시인들의 작품들이 인류에 의해 아직 읽혀진 적이 없었다.
* 위대한 시인들만 위대한 시인들의 작품들을 읽을 능력이 되기에 일반 인류에게 읽혀지지 않았다.
They have only been read as the multitude read the stars, at most astrologically, not astronomically.
그들(인류)은 대중이 천문학(진실)이 아닌 대부분 점성술(미신)로 별을 읽듯이 (고전을) 읽어왔을 뿐이다(겉핧기 식으로 읽어왔다).

Most men have learned to read to serve a paltry convenience, as they have learned to cipher in order to keep accounts and not be cheated in trade; but of reading as a noble intellectual exercise they know little or nothing; yet this only is reading, in a high sense, not that which lulls us as a luxury and suffers the nobler faculties to sleep the while, but what we have to stand on tiptoe to read and devote our most alert and wakeful hours to.

그들이 장부(accounts)를 유지하고 거래에서 사기당하지 않기 위해(not be cheated)암호화를 배웠듯이 대부분 인간들은 하찮은 편의(허세떨기 또는 생계, 사업용)로 읽기를 배워왔다.
but of reading as a noble intellectual exercise they know little or nothing;
하지만 고귀한 지적활동으로서 독서에 관해서 그들은 아는 것이 작거나 없었다.
yet this only is reading, in a high sense, not that which lulls us as a luxury and suffers the nobler faculties to sleep the while,
이는 우리를 사치로 얼르고 금방 잠드는 고급진 기능에 고통받는 것이 아닌 우리의 높은 감각의 독서가 아니다.
* 취미가 독서라고 말한다던가 책만 들었다 하면 잠에 빠지는 그런 것이 독서는 아니다.
but what we have to stand on tiptoe to read and devote our most alert and wakeful hours to.
