There was music from my neighbor’s house through the summer nights. In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars.
On week-ends his Rolls-Royce became an omnibus, bearing parties to and from the city between nine in the morning and long past midnight, while his station wagon scampered like a brisk yellow bug to meet all trains.
Every Friday five crates of oranges and lemons arrived from a fruiterer in New York--every Monday these same oranges and lemons left his back door in a pyramid of pulpless halves.
At least once a fortnight a corps of caterers came down with several hundred feet of canvas and enough colored lights to make a Christmas tree of Gatsby’s enormous garden.

Suddenly one of the gypsies, in trembling opal, seizes a cocktail out of the air, dumps it down for courage and, moving her hands like Frisco, dances out alone on the canvas platform.

I was on my way to get roaring drunk from sheer embarrassment when Jordan Baker came out of the house and stood at the head of the marble steps, leaning a little backward and looking with contemptuous interest down into the garden.

With Jordan's slender golden arm resting in mine, we descended the steps and sauntered about the garden. A tray of cocktails floated at us through the twilight, and we sat down at a table with the two girls in yellow and three men, each one introduced to us as Mr. Mumble.

In the main hall a bar with a real brass rail was set up, and stocked with gins and liquors and with cordials so long forgotten that most of his female guests were too young to know one from another.

By seven o’clock the orchestra has arrived, no thin five-piece affair, but a whole pitful of oboes and trombones and saxophones and viols and cornets and piccolos, and low and high drums.

The lights grow brighter as the earth lurches away from the sun, and now the orchestra is playing yellow cocktail music, and the opera of voices pitches a key higher.

I believe that on the first night I went to Gatsby’s house I was one of the few guests who had actually been invited. People were not invited--they went there.

나는 뻘쭘함(=sheer embarrassment:오로지 당황)을 면하려고 술에 취하면서(get roaring drunk:곤드레만드레 취하다) 내 나름으로 지냈다. 그때 조던 베이커가 집에서 나와서 약간 뒤로 젖힌 자세로 결멸적인(contemptuous) 눈으로 마당을 내려다보면서 대리석 계단 끝에 섰다.

"Hello!" I roared, advancing toward her. My voice seemed unnaturally loud across the garden.

She held my hand impersonally, as a promise that she'd take care of me in a minute,
그녀는 무심히(impersonally: 객관적으로)나의 손을 잡았다/좀이따가 나를 돌봐 주겠다고(나를 상대해주겠다고) 약속하는 듯이 (내손을 무심히 잡았다). [베이커양이 닉의 부름에 반응하기 전에 먼저 다른 상대가 있음을 보여준다.]
and gave ear to two girls in twin yellow dresses, who stopped at the foot of the steps.
그리고 계단 발판에 서있는 맞춰입은(twin) 노란 옷을 입은 두 여성에게 귀를 내줬다(귀를 기울였다).
"Hello!" they cried together. "Sorry you didn’t win."
"이봐요!" 그녀들이 합창하며 소리쳤다. "유감이예요. 당신 떨어졌죠." [두 노란옷 소녀는 베이커양이 경기에 진것을 조롱한다.]
That was for the golf tournament. She had lost in the finals the week before.
골프 경기에 관한 것이었다. 그녀는 지난주 결승전에서 졌었다.
"You don't know who we are," said one of the girls in yellow, "but we met you here about a month ago."
"당신은 우리가 누군지 모르죠", 노란옷을 입은 한소녀가 말했다. "하지만 우리는 한달전에 만난적 있어요."
"You’ve dyed your hair since then," remarked Jordan, and I started, but the girls had moved casually on and her remark was addressed to the premature moon, produced like the supper, no doubt, out of a caterer's basket.
"당신들 그 이후 머리 염색 했네요" 조던이 일갈(remark)했고 [몰라본 이유가 모양새를 싹 바꿨기 때문, 요즘말로 치면 성형이라도 했냐는 투의 빈정거림이다.] 그리고 나는 놀랐다(start up:놀라서 펄쩍 뛰어오르다=베이커양과 두소녀의 무례하고 얼척없는 대화방식에 적응되지 않음), 소녀들은 하던대로 이동했고[자기갈길 갔고], 그녀의 일갈은 덜찬 달(premature moon)에게 향한(address) 셈이 됐다. 의심할것도 없이 식료공급자 바구니에서 나온 식사처럼 만드러진 덜찬 달(=요리되지 않고 식재료) 처럼. [두 소녀는 베이커양에게 약만 올리고 자기 갈길 갔다. 이에 베이커양이 댓구한 말들이 그저 쓸모없이 되버렸다.]

With Jordan's slender golden arm resting in mine, we descended the steps and sauntered about the garden. A tray of cocktails floated at us through the twilight, and we sat down at a table with the two girls in yellow and three men, each one introduced to us as Mr. Mumble.
조던의 가는 금빛 팔을 내게 얹은채 우리는 계단을 내려가 마당을 산책했다(sauntered: 빈둥거리다). 칵테일 쟁반(tray)이 황혼 속에 둥둥떠서 우리에게 왔다. 그리고 우리는 노란옷을 입은 두여자와 세 남자가 있는 테이블에 앉았다. 서로 아무개 씨라고 소개했다. [파티에 온 사람들은 서로 소개 하지만 금방 잊혀진다.]

"마지막 온 것이 지난번 당신 만났을 때죠" 그여자가 주의를 돌려(=alert: 대화중에 딴짖하다 질문에 대답) 확신에 찬 목소리로 답했다. 그녀는 그녀의 동료를 쳐다보며 말했다. "그게 당신 때문이었죠, 루씰?" 루씰도 마찬가지 였다.
"파티에 자주 오시나요?" 조던이 옆의 여자에게 물었다.

"I like to come," Lucille said. "I never care what I do, so I always have a good time. When I was here last I tore my gown on a chair, and he asked me my name and address--inside of a week I got a package from Croirier's with a new evening gown in it."
"나는 오는거 좋아해요", 루씰이 말했다. "나는 여기와서 뭘하든 상관 없어요[뭔가 하려고 오는게 아니죠], 그래서 항상 즐거운 시간을 보내요. 지난번 여기 왔을때 의자에 옷(가운)이 찢어졌어요. 어떤남자가[he: 대화중 개츠비로 밝혀지긴 하지만 그가 누군지 아직 밝히지 않고 있다. 호기심을 유발하는 일종의 신비주의적 대화 기법] 내이름과 주소를 묻더군요. 일주일 내에 크로와이에로부터 새 저녁 가운을 받았어요"

"Did you keep it?" asked Jordan.

"Sure I did. I was going to wear it to-night, but it was too big in the bust and had to be altered. It was gas blue with lavender beads. Two hundred and sixty-five dollars."
"물론이죠. 나는 오늘밤 입을 생각이었죠. 하지만 가슴(bust)이 너무 컷어요. 수선해야 했어요. 그것은 라벤더 구슬이 달린 가스 불의 청색(gas blue) 이랍니다. 2백65달러나 한답니다."
"There's something funny about a fellow that’ll do a thing like that," said the other girl eagerly. "He doesn’t want any trouble with ANYbody."
"그런 행동을 하는 남자(fellow)는 뭔가 웃기는(funny) 구석이 있죠." 다른 여자가 열띠게 말했다. "그는 누구든 어떤 문제도 생기는 것을 원치 않았어요"
[남자란 호의를 가지고 접근할 때는 뭔가 저의가 있게 마련인데 그는 그런거(추근거림 따위) 원치 않았다.]
"Who doesn’t?" I inquired.
"그게 누군데요?" 내가 물었다.
"Gatsby. Somebody told me ......"
"게츠비, 누군가 그러던데요...."
[자기 파티에 온 손님이 놀다가 옷이 찢어졌다고 고액의 옷을 사서 보냈다. 게츠비는 그런 사람이다.]
"그게 누군데요?" 내가 물었다.
