Barn Burning (16/17) by William Faulkner
This time his father didn't strike him. The hand came even faster than the blow had, the same hand which had set the can on the table with almost excruciating care
이번에 그의 아버지는 소년을 때리지 않았다. 그 손(the hand)은 때리던 손(the blow)보다 더 빨랐다. 탁자 위에 매우 세심하게(excruciating care) 깡통을 내려놓던 그 손(the same hand)이었다.
[excruciating: 극도의, 몹시괴롭히는]
flashing from the can toward him too quick for him to follow it, gripping him by the back of the shirt and on to tiptoe before he had seen it quit the can,
[그 손은(=the same hand)] 깡통에서 소년을 향해 너무 빨라서(too quick) 소년이(for him) [눈으로] 따라잡을 수 없을 만큼(to follow) 순식간에 움직여(=flashing), 깡통을 내려놓는지 알아채기도 전에 까치발이 되도록(onto tiptoe) 소년의 등짝 셔츠를 움켜 쥐었다(=gripping).
[소년을 때렸던, 기름 깡통을 쥐고 있었고, 기름이 넘칠세라 매우 조심하며 탁자에 올려놓고, 소년을 몰아세우기 위해 등짝을 재빨리 움켜쥐던 그 손은 모두 아버지의 같은 손이다. 그 손은 상황에 따라 억세었다가 매우 정교하기도 했고 재빠르기도 했다.]
the face stooping at him in breathless and frozen ferocity, the cold, dead voice speaking over him to the older brother who leaned against the table, chewing with that steady, curious, sidewise motion of cows:
숨소리도 없이 냉정한(frozen ferocity:얼어붙은 포악함) [아버지의] 얼굴을 소년에게 들이대면서(=stooping), 차갑고 무미건조(=dead)한 목소리를 소년에게 퍼부었다(over him). [그 목소리는] 소가 되새김질 하듯이(sidewise motion of cows) 의아한 듯 꼼짝 않고 [담배를] 씹으며 탁자에 기대고 섯던 형에게 말하는 것이었다(=speaking~ to the older brother).
[아버지는 잘 들으라는 듯이 소년을 몰아세웠지만 실은 형에게 지시를 내린다.]
"Empty the can into the big one and go on. I'll ketch up with you."
"깡통을 큰통에 비우고 [먼저] 가거라. 곧 따라 가마."
"Better tie him to the bedpost," the brother said.
"침대 기둥에 묶어 놓는게 낳을꺼예요." 소년의 형이 말했다.
"Do like I told you," the father said.
"시킨대로 해" 아버지가 말했다.
Then the boy was moving, his bunched shirt and the hard, bony hand between his shoulder-blades, his toes just touching the floor,
그리고서 소년이 셔츠를 주름잡힌채(bunched) 움직였다. 단단하고 앙상한 손이 어깨쭉지 뼈 사이에[있었고], 소년의 발끝이 바룻바닥에 닿아 있다.
[아버지의 한 손이 겨드랑이에 들어와 소년의 셔츠 등짝을 움켜 쥐었기 때문에 소년이 살짝 들렸다. 이어서 소년이 바루바닥에 질질 끌려다닌다.]
across the room and into the other one, past the sisters sitting with spread heavy thighs in the two chairs over the cold hearth,
차가워진 난로바닥(hearth)위로 뚱뚱한 허벅지(thigh)를 의자 사이에 펼치듯 앉은 두 누이를 지나(past), 그 방을 가로질러(across) 옆방으로 들어갔다.
and to where his mother and aunt sat side by side on the bed, the aunt's arms about his mother's shoulders.
어머니와 이모가 나란히 침대에 걸터앉은 방으로 갔다. 이모의 팔이 어머니의 어깨에 얹어 있었다. [이모는 어머니를 위로하고 있다.]
[동사를 생략한 채 동명사와 명사를 연속적으로 나열하고 있다. 속도감을 주어 긴박한 상황을 묘사할때 활용되는 서술기법이다. 시에 사용되는 압축기법이기도 하다.]

"Hold him," the father said. The aunt made a startled movement. "Not you," the father said. "Lennie. Take hold of him. I want to see you do it." His mother took him by the wrist. "You'll hold him better than that. If he gets loose don't you know what he is going to do? He will go up yonder." He jerked his head toward the road.
"애 잡아" 아버지가 말했다. 이모가 화들짝(startled) 움직였다. "당신 말고." 아버지가 말했다. "레니, 애를 잡아. 잡고 있는 걸 봐야겠어." 어머니가 소년의 허리를 쥐었다. "그것보다 단단히 잡아야지. 애가 도망치면 무슨 짓을 할지 알잖아? 걔는 저쪽으로 갈거야." 아버지가 도로쪽을 향해 고갯짓(=jerk)을 했다. [주인집으로 가서 이를 것이란 것을 알고 있다.]
"Maybe I'd better tie him." His mother whispered.
"[어디] 묶어두는게 낳겠어요." 어머니가 마지못해 말했다.
"See you do then." Then his father was gone, the stiff foot, heavy and measured upon the boards, ceasing at last.
"그러던가" 그렇게 말하고(=then) 아버지는 뻣뻣한 다리가 마룻바닥을 무겁고 잰듯이 [걷는 소리를 내다가] 이내(at last) 사라지는 [소리와 함께] 떠났다.
Then he began to struggle. His mother caught him in both arms, he jerking and wrenching at them. He would be stronger in the end, he knew that. But he had no time to wait for it. "Lemme go!" he cried. "I don't want to have to hit you!"
그러자 소년이 몸부림치기[소년을 붙들고 있는 어머니의 양팔에 저항하다=struggle] 시작했다. 어머니가 양손으로 소년을 잡고 있었다. 소년이 양팔을 풀려고(at them=both arms) [고개를] 획져치고(jerking) [가슴을] 비틀었다(wrenching)[몸부림 쳤다.]. 소년은 결국에는 쎄질거라는 걸 알고 있었다. [몸부림 치다 보면 어머니가 끝까지 붙들지 못하고 양팔에서 놓여날 수 있다는 것을 알고 있었다.] 하지만 소년은 그때까지 기다릴 수 없었다. "가게 해줘요!" 소년이 소리쳤다. "엄마를 치고 싶지 않아요!"
"Let him go!" the aunt said. "If he don't go, before God, I am going up there myself!"
"애를 놔줘!" 이모가 말했다. "그애가 안가면, 맹세코(before God) 나라도(myself) 그리 갈거야!"
[going up there=가서 이를 테야! 방화를 농장주에게 알리겠다.]
"Don't you see I can't?" his mother cried. "Sarty! Sarty! No! No! Help me, Lizzie!"
"내가 그럴 수(놔줄 수) 없다는 걸 모르겠어? [애가 가게둘 수는 없어]" 어머니가 소리쳤다. "사티! 않돼! 리지, 도와다오![=저애를 잡아!]"

Then he was free. His aunt grasped at him but was too late. He whirled, running, his mother stumbled forward on to her knees behind him, crying to the nearer sister: "Catch him, Net! Catch him!"
소년은 풀려났다. 그의 이모가 그를 움켜쥐려(grasp at) 했으나 너무 늦었다. 소년은 획 돌아(whirled) 달렸고 어머니가 달려나가는 소년의 뒤로 무릎을 짚고(on to her knees) 앞으로 고꾸라지며(stumble forward) 가까이 있는 누나에게 소리쳤다. "동생을 잡아, 네트! 쟤 잡아라!"
But that was too late too, the sister (the sisters were twins, born at the same time, yet either of them now gave the impression of being, encompassing as much living meat and volume and weight as any other two of the family) not yet having begun to rise from the chair, her head, face, alone merely turned,
하지만 그것도 너무 늦었다. 누나는 의자에서 일어나지도 못했다. 그저(merely) 머리를 돌려 쳐다 봤을 뿐(alone)이었다. (두 누나는 동시에 태어난 쌍둥이였다. 하지만 둘 모두 살아있는 살덩어리와 비만(volume and weight)에 둘러쌓여(encompassing) 가족의 다른 둘에 비해(as~) 존재의 느낌(impression of being)은 없었다.

presenting to him in the flying instant an astonishing expanse of young female features untroubled by any surprise even, wearing only an expression of bovine interest.
둔한 관심의(bovine interest)[=소처럼 눈만 꿈뻑이는] 표정을 지으며(wearing) 심지어 어떤 당황의 기색도 없이 젊의 여성의 놀랍도록 풍만함(expanse)을 순식간에(flying instant) 소년에게 보여줬다(presenting).
[누나는 의자에 앉아 뭔일 있냐는 듯이 그저 의자에 앉아 쓰윽 고개를 돌려 소년이 달아나는 광경을 바라볼 뿐이다. 인생 경험이 많은 여자라면 사소한 소란에 무감하겠으나 젊은 여성임에도 굼뜬 외모에서 늘어진 팔자가 느껴진다(=an astonishing expanse of young female features).]
Then he was out of the room, out of the house, in the mild dust of the starlit road and the heavy rifeness of honeysuckle, the pale ribbon unspooling with terrific slowness under his running feet,
소년은 집밖으로 나와 별빛이 비추는 도로의 부드러운 먼지와 무성한(heavy rifeness) 월귤 사이를 달렸다. 소년이 달리는 발 아래에서 창백한 리본이 끔찍히도 느리게 풀려났다.
[달빛어린 흐릿한 길(=the pale ribbon)이 소년의 발 아래에서 느리게 지나갔다(=unspooling). 빨리 달려가고 싶지만 마치 헛걸음질 치는 듯이 더디게만 느껴지는 소년의 조급한 마음]
reaching the gate at last and turning in, running, his heart and lungs drumming, on up the drive toward the lighted house, the lighted door.
[마침내] 대문에 도달해 (안으로) 돌아 달렸다. 불켜진 집과 불켜진 문을 향해 진입로(the drive)를 달릴 때 소년의 심장과 폐가 요동쳤다(drumming).

He did not knock, he burst in, sobbing for breath, incapable for the moment of speech; he saw the astonished face of the Negro in the linen jacket without knowing when the Negro had appeared.
소년은 노크도 없이 들이닥쳤다(burst in). 말할 틈도 없이 숨이 가빠서 흐느꼈다. 언재 나타났는지도 모르는 린렌 자켓을 입은 흑인의 놀란 얼굴을 봤다.
"De Spain!" he cried, panted. "Where's…" then he saw the white man too emerging from a white door down the hall. "Barn!" he cried. "Barn!"
"드 스페인씨!" 소년이 헐떡거리며(pant) 소리쳤다. "어디 계시는지......" 이어 소년은 거실(the hall) 아래에 흰 문에서 백인이 나오는(emerge) 걸 동시에(too) 봤다. "헛간이요!" 소년이 소리쳤다. "헛간!"
"What?" the white man said. "Barn?"
"뭐라고?" 백인이 말했다. "헛간?"
"Yes!" the boy cried. "Barn!"
"네!" 소년이 소리쳤다. "헛간!"
"Catch him!" the white man shouted.
"애를 잡아!" 백인이 왜쳤다.
But it was too late this time too. The Negro grasped his shirt, but the entire sleeve, rotten with washing, carried away, and he was out that door too and in the drive again, and had actually never ceased to run even while he was screaming into the white man's face.
하지만 이번에도 너무 늦었다. 흑인이 소년의 셔츠를 움켜 쥐었지만 빨래로 바랜(rotten with washing) 팔소메 전체가 뜯겨져 나갔고(carried away) 소년은 문을 (빠져)나가 다시 진입로에 있었다. 사실 소년이 백인의 얼굴에 비명을 지르던 순간에도 이미 달리는 걸 멈추지 않았었다. [발을 동동 구르며 소리치고 있었고 내쳐 밖으로 달렸다.]
Behind him the white man was shouting, "My horse! Fetch my horse!" and he thought for an instant of cutting across the park and climbing the fence into the road, but he did not know the park nor how high the vine-massed fence might be and he dared not risk it.
그 뒤에서 백인이 외쳤다. "내 말! 말 가져와!" 소년은 정원을 가로질러(cutting across) 담장을 넘어(climbing) 큰길로 나갈 수 있을 거라고 순간 생각했다. 하지만 정원과 울창한 넝쿨(vine-messed) 담장이 얼마나 높은지 몰라서 위험을 무릎쓰지 않기로 했다(not dare to~).
