Barn Burning (15) by William Faulkner
It was after sundown when they reached home. They ate supper by lamplight, then, sitting on the doorstep, the boy watched the night fully accomplished, listening to the whippoorwills and the frogs, when he heard his mother's voice:
그들이 집에 도착했을 때는 해가 진 후였다. 그들은 등잔 옆(by)에서 저녁을 먹고 계단에 앉았다. 소년은 쏙독새와 개구리 소리를 들으며 밤이 깊었다(fully accomplished)는 걸 알았다(watched). 이 때 어머니의 목소리가 들렸다.
"Abner! No! No! Oh, God. Oh, God. Abner!" and he rose, whirled, and saw the altered light through the door where a candle stub now burned in a bottle neck on the table
"애브너! 않돼요. 하느님 맙소사! 애브너!" (이 소리를 듣고) 소년이 일어서며 획돌아(whirl) 문 사이로 어른거리는 불빛을 봤다. 지금은 초 조각(candle stub)이 병목에 꽃혀(in) 식탁 위에서 불타고 있었다. [좀전까지 등잔(lamplight) 아래서 밥을 먹고 있었다.]
and his father, still in the hat and coat, at once formal and burlesque as though dressed carefully for some shabby and ceremonial violence,
[문틈으로 보이는] 아버지는 여전히 모자와 외투 차림으로 마치(as though) 뭔가 허름하면서(shabby) 정식(ceremonial)으로 폭력을 위해 조심스레 차려입어서 격식(formal)과 우스꽝스러움(burlesque)을 동시에(at once A and B) 자아냈다.
emptying the reservoir of the lamp back into the five-gallon kerosene can from which it had been filled, while the mother tugged at his arm until he shifted the lamp to the other hand and flung her back, not savagely or viciously, just hard, into the wall,
[소년의 아버지는] 램프의 등잔통(reservoir)을 원래 들어 있던(have been filled)던 5갤런 석유깡통에 비우는 중 이었다. [기름을 다 비우는 동안] 어머니가 아버지의 팔에 메달렸고 이어서(until) 아버지가 램프를 다른 손으로 옮겼고(shifted) 어머니를 야만스럽지도(savagely) 폭력스럽지도(viciously) 않았지만 단호히(just hard) 벽쪽으로 뒤로 밀쳤다(fling: 내동댕이치다).
her hands flung out against the wall for balance, her mouth open and in her face the same quality of hopeless despair as had been in her voice.
어머니의 손이 균형을 잡으려고 벽을 쎄게 내리쳤고(flung<fling) 입이 벌어진채 목소리 만큼이나 절망의 빛이 얼굴에 돌았다.
Then his father saw him standing in the door.
그런차에 아버지가 문간에 서있는 소년을 봤다.

"Go to the barn and get that can of oil we were oiling the wagon with," he said. The boy did not move. Then he could speak.
"헛간에 가서 마차에 기름칠하던 기름깡통을 가져오너라" 아버지가 말했다. 소년은 꼼짝하지 않았다. 그리고 겨우 말했다.
[아버지는 방화에 쓰려고 등잔에 남은 기름 뿐만 아니라 마차에 칠하던 기름까지 모두 모으고 있다.]
"What…" he cried "What are you…"
"뭐라구요...." 소년이 소리쳤다. "뭐하려구요....."
"Go get that oil," his father said. "Go."
"가서 기름을 가져와" 아버지가 말했다. "가거라"
Then he was moving, running outside the house, toward the stable: this the old habit, the old blood which he had not been permitted to choose for himself,
소년이 집밖으로 마굿간을 향해 달려나갔다. 이건 자신에게 선택권이 없는[거스를 수 없는] 묵은 관습이자 기질이다.
which had been bequeathed him willy nilly
그것은(which=habit and blood) 소년에게 숙명처럼 따를 수밖에 없는 것이었다.
and which had run for so long (and who knew where, battening on what of outrage and savagery and lust) before it came to him.
그것은(which=habit and blood) 오랜동안 소년에게 전해지기(came to him) 전부터 흐르던 (had run for)것이었다. (어디서부터 분노와 야만과 욕망으로 가득(what of~: ~의 전부) 채워졌는지(batten on: ~으로 살찌다) 누가 알까만...(who knew~))
[광끼는 훈계로 소년에게 전달되기 전부터 아버지의 피속에 서려 있었다.]
'I could keep on,' he thought. 'I could run on and on and never look back, never need to see his face again. Only I can't. I can't,'
'할 수 있을거야' 소년은 생각했다. '영영 도망쳐서 절대 뒤돌아보지 않을 거야. 아버지 얼굴을 다시는 볼필요도 없겠지. 하지만 그렇게는 못해. 못해.'
[소년은 아버지로부터 차마 달아날 만큼 아직 성장하지 못 했다.]
the rusted can in his hand now, the liquid sploshing in it as he ran back to the house and into it, into the sound of his mother's weeping in the next room, and handed the can to his father.
이제 녹슨 깡통을 소년의 손에 쥐었고 집으로 달리자 액체가 찰랑거렸다(sploshing). 집안에는(in it) 옆방에서 어머니의 흐느끼는 소리가 가득했다(into the sound). 소년은 아버지에게 깡통을 건넸다.
"Ain't you going to even send a nigger?" he cried. "At least you sent a nigger before!"
"검둥이를 보내지 않을 거예요?" 소년이 울부짖었다. "전에는 적어도 검둥이를 미리 보냈었잖아요!"
[불내기전에 흑인을 보내 경고한 적이 있었다. 두려워 떨고만 있던 소년은 반항의 조짐을 보인다.]
