Barn Burning (14) by William Faulkner
The matter of the wagon - the setting of a spoke or two and the tightening of the tires - did not take long either, the business of the tires accomplished by driving the wagon into the spring branch behind the shop and letting it stand there,
바퀴살(spoke) 한두개 조이고(setting) 쇄테(tire) 조이는(tightening) 마차 손보는 일 역시 오래 걸리지 않았다. 쇄테 조이기는 마차를 대장간 뒤에 시내물 지류에 마차를 끌고가서(driving) 거기에 세워 두는 것으로 마쳤다. [쇄테 조이고 나서 마차를 시냇가에 댔다.]
the mules nuzzling into the water from time to time, and the boy on the seat with the idle reins, looking up the slope and through the sooty tunnel of the shed branch and halted it before the door.
나귀들이 가끔씩 물가에 질벅거력고(nuzzle: ~에 다가가다. 포용하다) 소년은 느슨한(idle) 고삐를 잡고 마차 의자에 앉아서 숫검댕이(sooty) 굴속 같은 헛간(the shed=대장간)이 있는 언덕 위를 올려다 보고 있었다(looking up).
where the slow hammer rang and where his father sat on an upended cypress bolt, easily, either talking or listening, still sitting there when the boy brought the dripping wagon up out of the branch and halted it before the door.
그곳에서 이따금(=slow) 망치 소리가 들려왔고 느긋히(easily) 말하다가 듣다가 하며 아버지가 뒤집힌 편백나무 등걸(=bolt: 볼트모양)에 앉아 있었다. 소년이 물이 뚝뚝 떨어지는(dripping) 마차를 지류에서 꺼내 위로 끌고와 (대장간) 문앞에 댔다(halted)을 때도 여전히 (그곳에) 앉아 있었다.

"Take them on to the shade and hitch," his father said. He did so and returned. His father and the smith and a third man squatting on his heels inside the door were talking, about crops and animals;
"나귀들(=them)을 그늘에 데려다가 메둬라(hitch)." 아버지가 말했다. 소년이 그렇게 하고는 돌아왔다. 아버지와 대장장이 그리고 또한 사람(a third man)이 문안쪽에서 뒷꿈치를 받치고(on his heels) 쭈그려앉아(squatting) 수확과 동물(=말)들에 대해 얘기하고 있었다.
the boy, squatting too in the ammoniac dust and hoof-parings and scales of rust, heard his father tell a long and unhurried story out of the time before the birth of the older brother even when he had been a professional horse trader.
소년도 메케한(ammoniac: 지린내 나는=달군 쇠를 고인 물에 담글 때 나는 지린내) 먼지와 말굽(hoof) 찌꺼기(paring)와 녹 비늘(scale: 쇄가 녹이 슬어 버늘 처럼 떨어진 조각) 가운데 쭈그려앉아 그의 형이 태어나기도 전 아버지가 말 거간꾼(trader) 시절의 오래된 그저그런(unhurried) 이야기를 들었다.
And then his father came up beside him where he stood before a tattered last year's circus poster on the other side of the store, gazing rapt and quiet at the scarlet horses, the incredible posings and convolutions of tulle and tights and the painted leer of comedians, and said, "It's time to eat."
그후(then) 아버지는 가게의 다른쪽 옆에 붙은 넝마(tatter)가 된 작년의 써커스 전단지 앞에서 분홍색 말과 얇은 명주(tulle: 튈) 타이즈 차림 기묘한 자세(=pose)[incredible posings=균형잡기 묘기]로 빙빙 돌거나 과도한(painted) 곁눈질(leer)의[painted leer=사팔뜨기 분장을 한] 희극배우들을 골똘히(rapt)[rapt and quiet=넋놓고] 바라보며(gazing: 동명사로 상황묘사) 서있는 소년의 옆으로 와서 말했다. "밥 먹을 시간이다."

But not at home. Squatting beside his brother against the front wall, he watched his father emerge from the store and produce from a paper sack a segment of cheese and divide it carefully and deliberately into three with his pocket knife and produce crackers from the same sack.
하지만 집으로 가진 않았다. 형 옆에서 앞 담장을 등지고(against) 쭈그려 앉아 소년은 아버지가 가게에서 나와(emerge) 종이 봉투(paper sack)에서 치즈 한 조각을 꺼내(produce: 내놓다. 산출하다) 조심스레 신중히 주머니칼로 삼등분 했고 같은 종이봉투에서 크래커를 꺼내는 모습을 지켜봤다 (watched).
[아버지는 먹을 것을 정확히 삼등분 했다. 이는 자신의 훈계를 따라 혈육을 지키려는 의지를 가진 작은 아들에게 어른 취급을 하려는 듯이 보인다.]
They all three squatted on the gallery and ate, slowly, without talking; then in the store again, they drank from a tin dipper tepid water smelling of the cedar bucket and of living beech trees.
그들 세부자(they)는 현관 앞에 쪼그려 앉아 말없이 천천히 먹었다. 잠시후 가게에 다시 들어가 양철 국자(dipper)에서 참죽나무(cedar) 들통과 생 너도밤나무(beech) 냄새가 나는 미지근한 물을 마셨다.
And still they did not go home.
끼니를 때운후에도(=still) 세 부자는 집으로 가지 않았다.
It was a horse lot this time, a tall rail fence upon and along which men stood and sat and out of which one by one horses were led, to be walked and trotted and then cantered back and forth along the road while the slow swapping and buying went on
이번에는 마장(horse lot=말 거래소)으로 갔다. 높은 가로막 담장 위와(upon) 담장을 따라(along) 사내들이 서거나 앉아 있었고 말 한마리씩 밖으로 내몰아서 걷거나 종종걸음(trot) 치게 했고 천천히 거래(swapping and buying)가 진행되는(went on) 동안 앞뒤로 뛰게 했다(canter: 느리게 구보시키다). [말 거래를 위해 상태를 보여주기 위한 행동]
and the sun began to slant westward, they - the three of them - watching and listening, the older brother with his muddy eyes and his steady, inevitable tobacco, the father commenting now and then on certain of the animals, to no one in particular.
태양이 서편으로 기울었다. 세 부자는 보다가 듣다가 했다. 소년의 형은 초점없는(=muddy: 흐리멍텅한)눈으로 여전히 늘하던대로(inevitable) 담배를 씹고 있었고 아버지는 이따금(now and then) 딱히 누구에게라고 할 것 없이 어떤 말(animal)에 대해 평가를 내렸다. [혼잣말을 했다. 뭔가 작심한 것이 있어서 밤을 기다리며 시간을 때우고 있다.]
