"Don't you want to ride now?" he whispered. "We kin both ride now," the light within the house altering now, flaring up and sinking, 'He's coming down the stairs now,' he thought.

"지금 안타실 건가요?" 소년이 낮게 말했다. [깔개를 내려놨으니] "이제 우리 둘다 타고 갈 수 있어요," 이때(now) 집안에서 불빛이 어른거렸다(altering). 불빛이 확 타올랐다(flaring up)가 사그러들었다[깔개 내던지는 소리에 놀라 집안에서 황급히 불을 밝히는 중]. '지금 아버지(He)가 계단을 내려오는구나' 소년이 짐작했다.

He had already ridden the mule up beside the horse block; presently his father was up behind him and he doubled the reins over and slashed the mule across the neck,

소년은 승마용 발판(horse block) 옆에서 이미 당나귀에 올랐다.[이미 당나귀 옆의 발판을 내딛고 있었다.] 이제 소년의 아버지는 소년의 뒤에 올라타서 고삐(rein)를 거머쥐었고(double: 두겹으로하다) 당나귀 목을 찰싹쳤다(slash).

but before the animal could begin to trot the hard, thin arm came round him, the hard, knotted hand jerking the mule back to a walk.

나귀가 종종 걸음(trot)을 치기 전에 강하고(hard) 마른(thin) 팔이 소년을 감쌌고(come around) 역시 강하고 성긴(knotted: 옹이가 있는) 손이 나귀가 걷도록(walk<>trot) 획 잡아챘다(jerking).

In the first red rays of the sun they were in the lot, putting plow gear on the mules. This time the sorrel mare was in the lot before he heard it at all, the rider collarless and even bareheaded, trembling, speaking in a shaking voice as the woman in the house had done,

[다음날 이른 아침] 태양의 붉은 첫빛줄기가 비칠때쯤(in the first......) 소년의 가족이 마당에서 쟁기를 나귀에 메고 있었다. 이때 소년은 그소리를 듣기도 전에 밤색 암말이 마당에 나타났다. 말에 탄 사람은 목깃도 없이 대머리 인채[옷매무세도 제대로 차리지 않고 모자도 안쓴것으로 보아 다급한 모습으로 나타남] 그 집안에서 여자가 그랬던 것 처럼[저택에서 여자(스페인 대령의 부인)가 분노의 소리를 질렀던 것처럼] 떨리는 목소리로 말하는 중이었다.

his father merely looking up once before stooping again to the hame he was buckling, so that the man on the mare spoke to his stooping back:

소년의 아버지는 무심히 한번 올려다 보고는 쟁기를 채우던(buckling) 멍에(hame)를 향해 몸을 구부렸다. 그러자 말에 탄 남자가 구부린 아버지의 등에 대고 말했다.

"You must realize you have ruined that rug. Wasn't there anybody here, any of your women…" he ceased, shaking, the boy watching him, the older brother leaning now in the stable door, chewing, blinking slowly and steadily at nothing apparently.

"당신은 깔개를 망쳐 놨단걸 알아야해. 여기 여자 누구 없나...."[깔개를 망쳐 놓다니... 세탁할줄 아는 여자 없는지 찾는 중] 그가 몸을 떨며 멈췄고 소년이 그 모습을 쳐다보는 동안 그의 형은 마굿간 문에 기대 (담배를)씹으며 별일 아니라는 듯이 눈만 껌뻑이고 있었다.

"It cost a hundred dollars. But you never had a hundred dollars. You never will. So I'm going to charge you twenty bushels of corn against your crop. I'll add it in your contract and when you come to the commissary you can sign it.

"그거 백달라 짜리야. 백달러 가져본 적도 었을껄. 앞으로도 (그만한 돈을) 가질 수도 없을게야. 그러니 당신 수확물에서 옥수수 20부대(bushels)를 떼겠어(going to charge). 내가 당신 계약서에 써넣을 테니 공증소(the commissary: 매점, 대리인, 작은 마을에 법정이 따로 없어서 식료품 가게에서 재판이 이뤄 졌었다.)에 와서 거기다 서명하라고.

That won't keep Mrs. de Spain quiet but maybe it will teach you to wipe your feet off before you enter her house again."

그걸로(that) 스페인 대령의 부인을 (분을) 삭히진(quiet) 못할거야. 하지만 당신이 그녀의 집안으로 들어설때 발은 깨끗이 닥아야 한다는 걸 가르칠 테지."

[말투로 보아 말타고 온 사람은 스페인 대령의 백인 감독관 쯤되는 사람임]

Then he was gone. The boy looked at his father, who still had not spoken or even looked up again, who was now adjusting the logger-head in the hame.

그러고 나서 그가 돌아갔다. 소년이 그의 아버지를 바라봤다. 꼼짝 않고 아무말도 없었고 (그 말탄 남자를) 바라보지도 않았다. 그저 멍에에 마구를 고쳐 메고(adjust) 있었다.

"Pap," he said. His father looked at him - the inscrutable face, the shaggy brows beneath which the gray eyes glinted coldly. Suddenly the boy went toward him, fast, stopping as suddenly.

"아빠" 소년이 말했다. 아버지가 덮수룩한 눈썹아래 갈색 눈을 차갑게 빛나며 알 수 없는(inscrutable) 표정으로 소년을 바라봤다. 갑자기 소년은 그에게 뛰어가서 급작히 섯다.

[소년이 마치 가족의 일원임을 강조하는 듯이 아버지를 '아빠'라고 부른 것은 처음이다. 이에 아버지의 표정이 심상치 않다.]

"You done the best you could!" he cried. "If he wanted hit done different why didn't he wait and tell you how? He won't git no twenty bushels! He won't git none! We'll gether hit and hide hit! I kin watch…"

"최고였어요!" 소년이 소리쳤다. "그자가 다르게 하고 싶었다면 기다렸다가 아버지에게 어떻게 하라고 말하지 않았겠어요? 그자는 20 푸대를 갖지 못할 거예요! 아무것도 못얻을 걸요! 우리가 모두 거둬서 숨겨 놓으면 되죠! 제가 망볼 수......"

[소년은 그자가 허공에 떠들다 갔을 뿐이지 자기 아버지에게 대놓고 지시하지 않았다며 소위 '정신승리'를 강조한다. 아버지의 '혈족(blood)' 훈계를 따르고 있다. 아버지의 영향에서 벗어나지 못하고 있다. 이방인이 들이 닥쳐도 그저 태연히 담배나 씹고 있던 소년의 형은 이미 아버지의 영향권에 동화 되었다. 소년이 아버지의 방화에 반동적이었다가 '혈족 훈계'를 받아들이는 듯 하지만 억지다.]

"Did you put the cutter back in that straight stock like I told you?"

"내가 시킨 쟁기날(the cutter) 달았니?"

"No sir," he said.

"아니요" 소년이 말했다.

"Then go do it."

"그거 하거라."

That was Wednesday. During the rest of that week he worked steadily, at what was within his scope and some which was beyond it, with an industry that did not need to be driven nor even commanded twice;

그 일이 있던 날은 수요일이었다. 그주 내내 소년은 묵묵히(steadily) 일했다. 어떤 것은 그가 할 수 있는 것도 있고 힘에 부치는 것도 있었다. 다그치거나(be driven) 두번씩 시킬(command twice) 필요도 없을 만큼 성실했다.

he had this from his mother, with the difference that some at least of what he did he liked to do, such as splitting wood with the half-size axe which his mother and aunt had earned, or saved money somehow, to present him with at Christmas.

소년의 근면성(this)은 어머니를 닮았다(had from). 차이라면 소년은 적어도 자기가 좋아하는 일이었다는 점이다(what he did). 가령 어머니와 이모가 저축해둔 돈으로 크리스마스 선물로 마련해준 작은도끼로 장작을 패는 일을 좋아했다(시키지 않아도 했다.)

[어머니는 온갖 굳은 일도 묵묵히 했다. 소년 역시 어머니 처럼 근면했다. 소년이 하는 일에는 좋아서 하는 일도 있다.]
