Barn Burning (10) by William Faulkner
It still hung there while they ate the cold food and then went to bed,
깔개(it)는 그들이 찬 음식을 먹고 잠자리에 들기 전 내내(while) 거기(there=벽난로 앞의 두의자 사이)에 걸려 있었다.
scattered without order or claim up and down the two rooms, his mother in one bed, where his father would later lie, the older brother in the other, himself, the aunt, and the two sisters on pallets on the floor.
[누추한 잠자리의 모습] 질서가 있거나 방 두개에 위아래 구분 없이 흩어져(scattered) 누웠다. 침대 한개에 어머니가 누웠고 나중에 아버지가 누울 것이다. 다른 방에 형과 소년 그리고 이모와 두 누나가 바닥의 지푸라기요(pallets) 위에 누웠다.
But his father was not in bed yet. The last thing the boy remembered was the depthless, harsh silhouette of the hat and coat bending over the rug
하지만 그의 아버지는 아직 침대에 들지 않았다. 소년이 기억하기로 모자 쓴 외투 차림의 깊이 없고 성긴 실루엣이 깔개 위로 몸을 구부렸다는 것이다.

and it seemed to him that he had not even closed his eyes when the silhouette was standing over him, the fire almost dead behind it, the stiff foot prodding him awake.
그 실루엣이 소년을 굽어보며 서 있을 때(standing over) 소년은 자신의 눈 조차 감을 수 없을 것 같았다. 벽난로의 불은 거의 꺼져고 뻣뻣한 다리가 소년을 쿡쿡 찔럿다(prodding).
"Catch up the mule," his father said.
"노새를 끌고 오너라" 그의 아버지가 말했다.
When he returned with the mule his father was standing in the black door, the rolled rug over his shoulder. "Ain't you going to ride?" he said.
소년이 노새를 끌고 왔을 때 아버지는 둘둘만 깔개를 어깨에 걸치고 검은 문앞에 서 있었다. "타고 갈거 아닌가요?" 소년이 말했다.
"No. Give me your foot."
"네 발을 이리내라"

He bent his knee into his father's hand, the wiry, surprising power flowed smoothly, rising, he rising with it, on to the mule's bare back (they had owned a saddle once; the boy could remember it though not when or where) and with the same effortlessness his father swung the rug up in front of him.
소년은 아버지의 손을 향해 무릎을 구부렸다. 강인한(wiry) 급작스런 힘이 부드럽게 전달되어(flowed) 소년은 그 힘에 당나귀의 맨 잔등(bare back) 위로 솟구쳤다(rising). (한때 그들[소년의 가족]에게도 안장을 가진 때도 있었다. 언젠가 어딘지는 기억되지 않지만) 그리고 아까처럼(same) 수월하게 깔개를 소년의 앞에 들어올렸다(sung up).
Now in the starlight they retraced the afternoon's path, up the dusty road rife with honeysuckle, through the gate and up the black tunnel of the drive to the lightless house, where he sat on the mule and felt the rough warp of the rug drag across his thighs and vanish.
이제 그들(=소년과 아버지)는 점심때 갔던 길(path)을 다시 따라갔다. 인동덩굴이 무성한(rife: 유행하는, 덮인) 위로 뻗은 흙길이다. 정문을 지나 불꺼진 집까지 진입로의 검은 터널을 지난 곳에(through) 소년은 당나귀 잔등에 앉아서 깔개의 둔탁한 휘어짐(warp)이 그의 허벅지를 가로지르며(cross) 사라지는(vanish) 걸 느꼈다.

"Don't you want me to help?" he whispered. His father did not answer and now he heard again that stiff foot striking the hollow portico with that wooden and clocklike deliberation, that outrageous overstatement of the weight it carried.
"도와 드려요?" 소년이 낮은 소리로 말했다. 그의 아버지는 아무말 없었고 그저 뻣뻣한 발이 나무 시계처럼 또렷하게 공허한 현관을 내딧는(strike) 소리를 다시 들었다. 그 소리가 주는(it carried) 무게는 분노에 차 있음을 확실했다.
The rug, hunched, not flung (the boy could tell that even in the darkness) from his father's shoulder struck the angle of wall and floor with a sound unbelievably loud, thunderous, then the foot again, unhurried and enormous;
아버지의 어깨에 착 달라 붙지 않고(not flung; fling: 갑자기 내뻗다. 날뛰다.) 휘어 있던(hunched) 깔개(소년은 어둠속에서도 그 모습을 알아챌 수 있었다)가 벽과 바닥의 각도로 [angle of wall and floor: 바닥에 수직으로] 믿을 수 없는 마치 천둥 같은 소리를 내며 내동댕이쳤다. 이어서 서두름도 없고 끝없는 [아버지의 뻣뻣한] 그 발소리가 다시 들렸다.
[아버지는 깔개를 문앞에 내동댕이 쳐놓곤 의연히 뒤돌아 서는 중이다.]
a light came on in the house and the boy sat, tense, breathing steadily and quietly and just a little fast, though the foot itself did not increase its beat at all, descending the steps now; now the boy could see him.
집안에 불이 켜졌고 소년은 긴장 한채 다소 호흡이 빨라진 채 꼼짝없이 앉아 있었다. 하지만 그 발소리의 간격(=beat)은 전혀 빨라지지 않았고 계단에 이르러서 줄어드는 참이었다. 이제 소년은 그의 아버지를 볼 수 있었다.
