Barn Burning (13) by William Faulkner
"Go back to the wagon," his father said.
"마차로 돌아가거라." 아버지가 말했다.
"Burnt?" the Justice said. "Do I understand this rug was burned too?"
"태우다니?" 판사가 말했다. "깔개를 태우기까지 했단 말이냐?"
"Does anybody here claim it was?" his father said. "Go back to the wagon." But he did not, he merely retreated to the rear of the room, crowded as that other had been, but not to sit down this time, instead, to stand pressing among the motionless bodies, listening to the voices:
"여기 누가 불냈다고 할 사람 있어?" 아버지가 말했다. "마차로 돌아가." 하지만 소년은 그러지 않았고 그저 방 뒤쪽으로 물러났다. (그곳은) 이전(이사 오기전에 열렸던 방화사건 법정)처럼 사람들로 들어찼지만(crowded) 이번에는 앉지 않고 꿈쩍하지 않는 사람들 사이를 밀치고(pressing) 서서 말소리를 들었다.
[이전의 법정에서 소년은 의기소침했으나 이번에는 혈족을 지키겠다는 의지를 보여주려는 듯이 서서 법정을 지켜보는 중이다.]
"And you claim twenty bushels of corn is too high for the damage you did to the rug?"
"그러니까 당신은 깔개를 망친 댓가로 옥수수 스무포대가 과하다는 거죠?"

"He brought the rug to me and said he wanted the tracks washed out of it. I washed the tracks out and took the rug back to him."
"저자가 깔개를 가져와서 말하길 깔개에서 자욱을 지워 달라고 했죠. 나는 자욱을 지워내고 깔개를 도로 갖다 줬습니다."
"But you didn't carry the rug back to him in the same condition it was in before you made the tracks on it."
"하지만 당신이 깔개에 자욱을 내기 이전 상태로 돌려준게 아니잖소"

His father did not answer, and now for perhaps half a minute there was no sound at all save that of breathing, the faint, steady suspiration of complete and intent listening.
아버지는 대답이 없었고 대략(perhaps) 삼십초 간 전적으로(complete) 들어 보겠다는(intent) 숨죽인(steady) 탄식(suspiration)을 담은 채(save) 전혀 아무소리도 없었다.
"You decline to answer that, Mr. Snopes?" Again his father did not answer.
"스놉스씨 대답을 거부하는 거요?" 아버지는 다시[이번에도] 답하지 않았다.
"I'm going to find against you, Mr. Snopes, I'm going to find that you were responsible for the injury to Major de Spain's rug and hold you liable for it.
"스놉스 씨, 당신의 소를 기각할(against you) 참이요(going to find). 드 스페인 소령의 깔개를 망친(injury) 원인은 당신에게 있고 그 (배상)책임은 당신에게 있다고 판결하오(hold).
But twenty bushels of corn seems a little high for a man in your circumstances to have to pay.
하지만 옥수수 스무포대는 당신 처지(circumstances)에 갚아야 하기(to have to pay)는 과한 것 같소.
Major de Spain claims it cost a hundred dollars.
드 스페인 소령은 깔개(=it) 가격이 백달러라고 주장하고 있소.
October corn will be worth about fifty cents.
시월에 옥수수는 (포대당) 50센트 쯤 나갈 것이오(worth).
I figure that if Major de Spain can stand a ninety-five dollar loss on something he paid cash for, you can stand a five-dollar loss you haven't earned yet.
내가 셈해보니(figure) 만일 드 스페인 소령이 현금으로 지불한 (깔개 값에서) 95달러 손해를 받아들인다면(stand: 견디다) 당신은 아직 거둬들이지 않은 (옥수수에서) 5달러 손실을 받아들이시오.
I hold you in damages to Major de Spain to the amount of ten bushels of corn over and above your contract with him, to be paid to him out of your crop at gathering time. Court adjourned."
당신이 드 스페인 소령의 피해에 옥수수 10포대 분량을 수확기에 당신이 거둔 농작물에서 그에게 지불하기로 한 것에 덧붙이도록(over and above) 판결합니다(I hold~). 폐정합니다(adjourn: 회의를 휴회하다)."

It had taken no time hardly, the morning was but half begun.
재판(it)은 오래 걸리지 않았다. 오전의 반이 지났다.
He thought they would return home and perhaps back to the field, since they were late, far behind all other farmers.
다른 농부들에 비해 한참 늦었기에(since)소년은 그들(아버지와 형)이 집으로 돌아가 들로 나갈 거라고(would) 생각했다.
But instead his father passed on behind the wagon, merely indicating with his hand for the older brother to follow with it,
하지만 그대신 소년의 아버지는 마차 뒤를 지나쳐(passed on) 형에게 마차를 가지고(with it=wagon) 따라오라는 손짓을 했다(indicating with his hand).
and he crossed the road toward the blacksmith shop opposite, pressing on after his father, overtaking him, speaking, whispering up at the harsh, calm face beneath the weathered hat:
그리고 소년은 맞은편 대장간을 향해 길을 건넜다. [소년은] 아버지를 바짝 뒤쫓아(pressing on) 아버지를 따라잡고(overtaking) 낡은(weathered) 모자 아래 거칠고 침착한 [아버지의] 얼굴을 향해(at) 속삭이듯 말했다.
"He won't git no ten bushels neither. He won't git one. We'll…" until his father glanced for an instant down at him, the face absolutely calm, the grizzled eyebrows tangled above the cold eyes, the voice almost pleasant, almost gentle:
"그자는 열 포대도 얻지 못할 거에요. 한 포대도 못얻겠죠. 우리가......" 소년의 아버지가 잠시 내려다 보는 동안(until) 표정(the face)은 매우 평온했다. 희끗한(grizzled) 눈썹을 차가운 눈 위에 메단채(tangled) 음성은 거의 기쁘고 온화했다.
[혈족의 편에 선 막내 아들의 모습을 보니 아버지는 뿌듣한 표정을 지었다.]
"You think so? Well, we'll wait till October anyway."
"그러게 생각하니? 좋아, 우린 어쨌거나 시월까지 기다려야겠지."
