At nine o’clock, one morning late in July, Gatsby’s gorgeous car lurched up the rocky drive to my door and gave out a burst of melody from its three-noted horn.

It was the first time he had called on me, though I had gone to two of his parties, mounted in his hydroplane, and, at his urgent invitation, made frequent use of his beach.

그런 자세는 젊었을때 몸쓰는일(=lifting work:드는일)이나 공장일(=rigid sitting:꽂꽂하게 앉아있는)의 흔적은 없어 보였고(with the absence of~) 오히려 긴장된 돌발적인(sporadic) 운동(games)으로 드러나지 않은 우아함이 있었다.

This quality was continually breaking through his punctilious manner in the shape of restlessness. He was never quite still; there was always a tapping foot somewhere or the impatient opening and closing of a hand.

He saw me looking with admiration at his car. "It's pretty, isn't it, old sport?" He jumped off to give me a better view. "Haven't you ever seen it before?"

I'd seen it. Everybody had seen it. It was a rich cream color, bright with nickel, swollen here and there in its monstrous length with triumphant hat-boxes and supper-boxes and tool-boxes, and terraced with a labyrinth of wind-shields that mirrored a dozen suns.

Sitting down behind many layers of glass in a sort of green leather conservatory, we started to town.
여러겹 유리(태양이 여러개로 반사되었다.) 뒤의 녹색 가죽의 온실(conservatory : 온실, 음악학교=화려하고 아늑한 실내)에 앉아서 도심으로 향했다.
지난 몇달 그와 대여섯번 얘기 해봤는데 실망 스럽게도 별로 건질게 없는(little to say) 사람이란걸 알았다. 뭔가 알수 없는 구석(=undefined consequence: 뻔하지 않은 결말=비범한)이 있는 사람일 거라는 나의 인상은 엷어졌고(had fade) 잘 꾸며진 여관(=road-house:길가의 집) 소유자(proprietor) 정도로 변했다.
[처음에는 비범한 사람일 거라는 인상을 받았으나 몇번 이야기를 나눠보니 큰 저택을 소유한 그저그런 부자 중 하나일 뿐이다. 게다가 게츠비의 '저택'을 '여관' 쯤으로 비하한 것으로 봐서 실망이 컸음을 보여준다.]
And then came that disconcerting ride. We hadn’t reached West Egg village before Gatsby began leaving his elegant sentences unfinished and slapping himself indecisively on the knee of his caramel-colored suit.

[닉의 집에서 게츠비의 집까지 마당을 가로질러 걸어서 갈만한 가까운 거리다. 게츠비는 멋진 차를 끌고 와서 함께 타고 가자고 한 것은 뭔가 둘만의 의도가 있었다. 짧은 거리를 같이 차로 이동하는 중인데 채 동네에 진입하기도 전에 게츠비는 뭔가 말할게 있다는 듯 조바심을 낸다. 개츠비는 처음부터 자기 이야기를 말하려고 맘먹고 있었다.]
"Look here, old sport," he broke out surprisingly. "What's your opinion of me, anyhow?" A little overwhelmed, I began the generalized evasions which that question deserves.
"이봐 친구, 나 어떻게 생각해?" 갑작스런 질문에 그냥 의례적인 답(generalized evasion:일반화된 둘러대기, 회피)을 했다.
"Well, I'm going to tell you something about my life," he interrupted. "I don't want you to get a wrong idea of me from all these stories you hear."

그는 그의 연회장(hall)에서 벌어진 대화에 양념을 더한(flavored) 기이한 비난들(bizarre accusations=의혹)이 있다는 걸 알고 있었다(was aware of). [어중이 떠중이가 모여든 연회장에서 벌어지는 대화에 파티 주인에 관한 갖가지 억측들도 기이하게 윤색되어 입에 오르내린다. 게츠비도 그런 소문을 다 알고 있었다.]
"I'll tell you God's truth." His right hand suddenly ordered divine retribution to stand by.
"신의 진실을 말해줄께" 그의 오른손이 갑자기 신의 응징(divine retribution)일랑 대기하라고(stand by) 명했다. [신께 맹세하고 진실을 말할 것이니 거짓의 벌은 말이나 들어보고 하라는 듯이 오른 손을 들어 허공에 대고 정지하라는 손짓을 함.]
"I am the son of some wealthy people in the Middle West - all dead now. I was brought up in America but educated at Oxford, because all my ancestors have been educated there for many years. It is a family tradition."

He looked at me sideways--and I knew why Jordan Baker had believed he was lying. He hurried the phrase "educated at Oxford," or swallowed it, or choked on it, as though it had bothered him before. And with this doubt, his whole statement fell to pieces, and I wondered if there wasn't something a little sinister about him, after all.

"After that I lived like a young rajah in all the capitals of Europe - Paris, Venice, Rome - collecting jewels, chiefly rubies, hunting big game, painting a little, things for myself only, and trying to forget something very sad that had happened to me long ago."

With an effort I managed to restrain my incredulous laughter. The very phrases were worn so threadbare that they evoked no image except that of a turbaned "character." leaking sawdust at every pore as he pursued a tiger through the Bois de Boulogne.

"Then came the war, old sport. It was a great relief, and I tried very hard to die, but I seemed to bear an enchanted life. I accepted a commission as first lieutenant when it began.

"아르곤 숲(전투)에서 두개 자동소총 분대(detachment: 파견대)를 이끌고 깊숙히 전진(so far forward) 했는데 본대(the infantry:보병 연대)가 진입할 수 없는 곳으로 양측의 간격이 반마일도 않됐지. 우리는 거기서 이를 낮밤을 130명의 인원과 르위스 기관총 16대로 지켰어. 본대가 도착했을 때 시체더미 사이에서 3개 독일군 사단의 휘장(insignia)을 발견했지.

"I was promoted to be a major, and every Allied government gave me a decoration - even Montenegro, little Montenegro down on the Adriatic Sea!"

Little Montenegro! He lifted up the words and nodded at them - with his smile.

The smile comprehended Montenegro’s troubled history and sympathized with the brave struggles of the Montenegrin people.
그 미소는 몬테네그로의 불운한(troubled) 역사를 이해한다는 것이고 몬테네그로 인들의 용감한 투쟁에 대한 공감이었다.
It appreciated fully the chain of national circumstances which had elicited this tribute from Montenegro’s warm little heart.
몬테네그로의 따뜻한 작은 심장(마음)에서 찬사(tribute)를 끌어낸(elicited) 것으로 국가적 찬사에 완전히 감사한다는 표시였다.

My incredulity was submerged in fascination now; it was like skimming hastily through a dozen magazines.

He reached in his pocket, and a piece of metal, slung on a ribbon, fell into my palm.

"I'm going to make a big request of you to-day," he said, pocketing his souvenirs with satisfaction, "so I thought you ought to know something about me. I didn't want you to think I was just some nobody.

I hadn’t the faintest idea what "this matter." was, but I was more annoyed than interested. I hadn’t asked Jordan to tea in order to discuss Mr. Jay Gatsby. I was sure the request would be something utterly fantastic, and for a moment I was sorry I’d ever set foot upon his overpopulated lawn.

나는 '이껀'에 대해 희미한 기억조차 없었고 호기심 보다는 짜증이 났다. 나는 조던에게 제이 게츠비씨와 상의하자고 얘기한 적이 없었다. 나는 이 요청이 완전히 황당한 것일지 모른다는(would be ~) 확신이 들었고 잠깐동안 내가 그의 북적대는 잔디밭(overpopulated lawn=게츠비의 파티)에 발을 들여놨다는 것이 불쾌했다. [괸시리 게츠비와 그의 주변에 엮이게 된 것 같아 짜증이 났다.]
그는 더이상 말하지 않았다. 도시에 이르렀을 땐 그의 단정함(correctness)이 그에게 살아났다 [방금 전까지만 해도 게츠비는 뭔가 할말이 있어서 조바심이 났었다. 할말 다하고 나니 다시 꿋꿋해졌다.] 우리는 빨간 띠를 두른 배가 바다로 향하고 있는 루즈벨트 포구를 지났고 어둡고 1900년의 황금빛이 바랜(faded-gilt) 명맥만 남은(=undeserted) [전성기를 보내고 언재 닫게 될지 모를] 선술집들이 늘어선 돌바닥길의 빈민가를 따라 달렸다.

고상[열차]길(the elevated railway)의 기둥(pillar)을 휘젖고 돌아(twisted along~) 아스토리아 가의 겨우 절반 정도 왔을때 "적~적~스팻" 친숙한 모터 싸이클의 소리가 들렸다. 화난(frantic) 경찰이 탄 모터싸이클이 옆에 따라 붙었다.
“All right, old sport,” called Gatsby. We slowed down. Taking a white card from his wallet, he waved it before the man’s eyes.
"Right you are," agreed the policeman, tipping his cap. "Know you next time, Mr. Gatsby. Excuse ME!"
"그렇군요," 경찰이 그의 모자를 슬쩍 들고(tipping his cap=거수경례를 붙이고) 알아보는 체 했다(=agree). "다음 번에는 알아 뵙지요, 게츠비씨. 실례 했습니다."
"What was that?" I inquired.
"그게 뭐죠?" 내가 물었다.
"The picture of Oxford?"
"옥스포드 사진 인가요?" [옥스포드 사진이 왜? 닉은 상황을 다 짐작 하면서 엉뚱한 말을 한다. 약간 비꼬는 투다.]
"I was able to do the commissioner a favor once, and he sends me a Christmas card every year."

Over the great bridge, with the sunlight through the girders making a constant flicker upon the moving cars, with the city rising up across the river in white heaps and sugar lumps all built with a wish out of non-olfactory money.
커다란 다리위에 지나가는 차들 위로 지지보(girder) 사이에서 [교각이 교차하는 사이에서] 햇볕이 끝없이 반짝이고 강건너 도시가 하얗게 쌓여있고 설탕 덩어리들이 구린내(non-olfactory) 안나길(out of~) 바라는 돈으로 지어졌다.
[경찰의 비리를 목격한 닉은 겉으로 멀끔해 보이지만 속으로 온갖 비리가 난무하는 도시에 대한 느낌이 새삼 스럽다.]
The city seen from the Queensboro Bridge is always the city seen for the first time, in its first wild promise of all the mystery and the beauty in the world.
퀸즈보로 다리에서 본 도시는 세상의 거친 신비함과 아름다움으로 보여 볼때마다 낮설다.
[멀리 떨어져 도시를 보면 아름답기도 하지만 그 안에서 온갖 험한 일들이 벌어진다고 생각하니 볼때마다 생경하다. (햇볕에 반짝이는 도시의 모습=구린내 나는 하얀 설탕 무더기)]
