On Sunday morning while church bells rang in the villages alongshore, the world and its mistress returned to Gatsby’s house and twinkled hilariously on his lawn.

일요일 아침 해변을 끼고(들어선) 마을의 교회 종소리가 울릴 때 세상(the world=의 온갖 것들-어중이 떠중이-)과 그들의 여자들(mistress:정부)이 게츠비의 집으로 돌아와(return) 그의 (마당) 잔디밭에 법석대며(hilariously) 반짝였다.

[토요일 밤의 흥청망청 파티가 있던 다음날, 일요일 아침의 게츠비 마당의 풍경을 풍자적으로 묘사함. 세상의 온갖 사람들이 다 몰려 들어 법석이고 있다.]

"He's a bootlegger," said the young ladies, moving somewhere between his cocktails and his flowers. "One time he killed a man who had found out that he was nephew to Von Hindenburg and second cousin to the devil. Reach me a rose, honey, and pour me a last drop into that there crystal glass."

"그사람 밀주업자(bootlegger) 래요" 그의(=게츠비의) 칵테일과 그의(=게츠비의) 꽃 사이를 오가면서 한 젊은 숙녀가 말했다.  "한번은 그가 사람을 죽였는데 폰 힌덴버그의 조카로 밝혀졌죠. 악당의 6촌(second cousin)쯤 된데요. 장미 주세요, 당신, 거기 수정 잔에 마지막 한방울까지 부어 줘요."

['he', 'his' 는 모두 게츠비. 뭔가 불량한, 어중이떠중이들이 게츠비의 마당에 모여 게츠비의 술을 '마지막한 방울까지 비워내면서' 시중에 떠도는 게츠비 험담에 한마디 거드는 중.]

Once I wrote down on the empty spaces of a time-table the names of those who came to Gatsby’s house that summer. It is an old time-table now, disintegrating at its folds, and headed "This schedule in effect July 5th, 1922."

한번은 내가 여름에 게츠비의 집에 방문했던 사람들의 이름을 (기차)시간표 빈칸에 적어 놓았었다. 지나간 시간표 였는데, 접은(fold) 자리가 헤져(dis-integrating)고 머릿글에 "이 일정표는 1922년 7월 5일 부터 유효하다(in effect)" 라고 써 있었다.

['effective date': '유효일(유통기한 표시 등)' 또는 '개시일(계약의 이행 시작일)'의 의미. 사용되는 상황에 따라 차이가 있다.  (the date when an agreement starts to operate, or when something is recorded as being bought or sold)]

But I can still read the gray names, and they will give you a better impression than my generalities of those who accepted Gatsby’s hospitality and paid him the subtle tribute of knowing nothing whatever about him.

하지만 [거기써있는] 바랜(gray) 이름들은 아직 선명하다(=can read: 읽을 수 있다). [이 글을 쓰는 시점에 대한 암시] 그리고 게츠비의 접대(hospitality)를 받아들이고 그에 관해 아무것도 모르는 미묘한 찬사(=헛소문에 기반한 게츠비에 대한 평판)를 늘어놓던 사람들에 대한 나의 평가(generalities) 보다 더 괜찮은 인상을 줄 것이다.

[이 글을 쓰는 시점은 닉이 아무도 오지 않은 게츠비의 장례식을 치루고 회상하는 중이다. 기차 시간표에 아무렇게나 써 있다가 바래져간 인물들의 이름들과 내심 험담(미묘한 찬사=소문에 의하면 게츠비의 정체는 '밀주업자(악당)'와 '독일 장군의 조카(유럽 귀족혈통)'사이의 어디쯤에 있다.)을 하면서도 게츠비의 파티에 와서 즐기던 사람들을 보며 닉이 받았던 인상을 비교한다. 그들에게서 그때 받았던 인상(닉의 평가=MY generalities))보다는 지금 기차 시간표에 아무렇게나 써있다가 바래져 버릴 이름들(일반적인 평가=give YOU better impression)이 오히려 선명하다. 이름값 만 못하는 형편없는 인물들이다.]

From East Egg, then, came the Chester Beckers and the Leeches, and a man named Bunsen, whom I knew at Yale, and Doctor Webster Civet, who was drowned last summer up in Maine.

동쪽계란에서 온 사람들, 체스터 베커 부부, 리치(leech:거머리) 부부, 예일에서 부터 알고 있는 분센 이라는 이름의 남자, 작년 여름 메인에서 익사했다는 의사 웨스터 씨벳(civet:사향고양이).

And the Hornbeams and the Willie Voltaires, and a whole clan named Blackbuck, who always gathered in a corner and flipped up their noses like goats at whosoever came near.

혼빔(hornbeam: 서어나무) 부부, 윌리 볼테르부부, 항상 구석에 모여있다가 누가 가까이 올라치면 염소처럼 코를 뒤집는(벌름거리는) 블랙벅(blackbuck: 인도산 영양) 이라는 이름을 가진 일족들(clan).

And the Ismays and the Chrysties (or rather Hubert Auerbach and Mr. Chrystie’s wife), and Edgar Beaver, whose hair, they say, turned cotton-white one winter afternoon for no good reason at all.

이스메이 부부와 크리스티 부부(휴버트 아우워바크가 크리스티씨의 부인이 데리고 왔던가?) 별로 그럴듣한 이유 없이 겨울 오후 백발이 되었다고 알려진 에드가 비버(beaver)씨,

Clarence Endive was from East Egg, as I remember. He came only once, in white knickerbockers, and had a fight with a bum named Etty in the garden.

내가 아는 한 클라렌스 엔다이브씨는 동쪽 계란에서 왔다. 그는 흰 반바지(knickerbockers)를 입고 한번 왔었다. 에티라는 놈팽이(bum)와 마당에서 대판 싸우고 갔다.

From farther out on the Island came the Cheadles and the O. R. P. Schraeders, and the Stonewall Jackson Abrams of Georgia, and the Fishguards and the Ripley Snells. Snell was there three days before he went to the penitentiary, so drunk out on the gravel drive that Mrs. Ulysses Swett’s automobile ran over his right hand.

멀리 떨어진 섬에서 온 치들스 와 슈뢰더씨, 죠지아에서 온 스톤월 잭슨 아담스 그리고 퓌쉬가드 부부, 이플리 스넬씨 부부. 스넬(snell:목줄, 날쎈)씨는 감옥(penitentiary)에 가기전 사흘이나 묵었다. 자갈길에서 너무 취해서 유리시스 스웨트씨의 차가 그의 오른팔을 깔아버렸었다.

The Dancies came, too, and S. B. Whitebait, who was well over sixty, and Maurice A. Flink, and the Hammerheads, and Beluga the tobacco importer, and Beluga’s girls.

댄시스 부부도 왔었고 족히 육십은 넘었을 와이트베이트씨 부부, 모리스 플링크씨와 해머헤드(Hammerheads:귀상어)씨 부부, 담배수입업자 벨루가(Beluga: 흰돌고래)씨와 그의 여자들.

From West Egg came the Poles and the Mulreadys and Cecil Roebuck and Cecil Schoen and Gulick the state senator and Newton Orchid, who controlled Films Par Excellence, and Eckhaust and Clyde Cohen and Don S. Schwartze (the son) and Arthur McCarty, all connected with the movies in one way or another.

서부계란에서 온 폴스 부부, 멀레디 부부, 세실 뢰벅, 세실 쇤, 주 상원의원 굴릭, '필름 파 엑설런스' 영화사를 좌지우지하는(control) 뉴튼 오키드씨, 클라이드 코헨씨, 돈 슈워츠의 아들, 아서 매카티씨 등 서로 이래저래 영화 산업과 관련 있는 자들이다.

And the Catlips and the Bembergs and G. Earl Muldoon, brother to that Muldoon who afterward strangled his wife.

캐트립스 부부, 벰버그 부부, 얼 멀둔, 자기 아내를 목졸라 죽였다는 멀둔의 형제.

Da Fontano the promoter came there, and Ed Legros and James B. (“Rot-Gut.”) Ferret and the De Jongs and Ernest Lilly--they came to gamble, and when Ferret wandered into the garden it meant he was cleaned out and Associated Traction would have to fluctuate profitably next day.

흥행꾼 다 폰타노도 왔었다. 에드 르그로스와 제임스 페릿(“Rot-Gut.”, 썩은 내장;속이 시커먼), 그리고 드 종(De Jongs;=majong:마작 놀음), 어니스트 릴리 등은 도박하러 온사람, 페릿씨가 돈을 다잃으면 마당을 맴돌다. 그가 왔다만 다음날 그의 회사 수익이 출렁인다.[큰 도박판이 열렸음을 암시한다.]

A man named Klipspringer was there so often and so long that he became known as “the boarder.”--I doubt if he had any other home.

너무자주, 그리고 너무 오랜기간 머물러 하숙생(the boarder)이라는 별명이 붙은 남자, 그가 집이 있긴 한지 의심스럽다.

Of theatrical people there were Gus Waize and Horace O’donavan and Lester Meyer and George Duckweed and Francis Bull.

연극 관계자들도 있었다.

Also from New York were the Chromes and the Backhyssons and the Dennickers and Russel Betty and the Corrigans and the Kellehers and the Dewars and the Scullys and S. W. Belcher and the Smirkes and the young Quinns, divorced now, and Henry L. Palmetto, who killed himself by jumping in front of a subway train in Times Square.

뉴욕 출신의 크롬스 부부, 백하이슨 부부, 데니커스 부부, 러셀 베티와 코리건, 켈러허 부부, 드워 부부, 스컬리 부부, 벨처, 스머키스 부부, 지금은 이혼한 젊은 퀸즈 부부, 타임 스퀘어에서 지하철로 뛰어내려 자살한 헨리 팔메토.

Benny McClenahan arrived always with four girls. They were never quite the same ones in physical person, but they were so identical one with another that it inevitably seemed they had been there before.

베니 맥크레나한은 항상 네명의 여자를 동반하고 온다. 올때마다 동반하는 여자가 다르다. 하지만 너무나 닮아서 분명히 전에 거기 왔었던 것이 확실하다.

I have forgotten their names--Jaqueline, I think, or else Consuela, or Gloria or Judy or June, and their last names were either the melodious names of flowers and months or the sterner ones of the great American capitalists whose cousins, if pressed, they would confess themselves to be.

이름을 기억하지 못하는데, 성이 정겨운(melodious) 꽃이나 달(month)을 연상시키는 재클린 아니면 콘수엘라 아니면 글로리아, 아니면 쥬디 아니면 쥰(June), 혹은 유명한 사람(the sterner=사랑하는 또는 유명한 사람을 비유적으로 이르는 말), 유명한 미국 자본가의 사촌이거나 캐물으면(if pressed) 자신이라고 자백할 사람들.

In addition to all these I can remember that Faustina O’brien came there at least once and the Baedeker girls and young Brewer, who had his nose shot off in the war,

여기에 더해서 파우스티나 오브라이언도 한번 왔고, 베데커 처녀들과 전쟁에서 코가 날아간 젊은 브루어(Brewer=맥주양조업자, 음모가)씨도 있었고,

and Mr. Albrucksburger and Miss Haag, his fiancee, and Ardita Fitz-Peters and Mr. P. Jewett, once head of the American Legion,

앨브루스버거(Albrucksburger) 씨, 해그(Haag, 네델란드이름)양과 그녀의 약혼자, 아드리타 피츠 피터스 부부, 미국 재향군인회(American Legion) 회장을 역임한 쥬윗씨,

 and Miss Claudia Hip, with a man reputed to be her chauffeur, and a prince of something, whom we called Duke, and whose name, if I ever knew it, I have forgotten.

클라우디아 힙(hip:골반) 양이 그녀의 운전수라는 별명을 얻은 남자와 함께 왔고, 대공(Duke)라고 불렀던 이름을 알았으니 기억 안나는 어느 왕국의 왕자도 있었다.

All these people came to Gatsby’s house in the summer.

그 여름, 온갖 군상들이 게츠비의 집에 모여들었었다.
