I had on a new plaid skirt also that blew a little in the wind, and whenever this happened the red, white, and blue banners in front of all the houses stretched out stiff and said TUT-TUT-TUT-TUT, in a disapproving way.

The largest of the banners and the largest of the lawns belonged to Daisy Fay’s house. She was just eighteen, two years older than me, and by far the most popular of all the young girls in Louisville.

그 중에서 가장 커다란 휘장과 커다란 정원은 데이지 페이의 집이죠. 그녀(데이지)는 그때 열여덟, 나보다 두살 많았죠. 루이빌(Louisville)의 젊은 소녀들 중에 매우(by far) 가장 인기있었어요(the most popular).

She dressed in white, and had a little white roadster, and all day long the telephone rang in her house and excited young officers from Camp Taylor demanded the privilege of monopolizing her that night. “Anyways, for an hour!”

When I came opposite her house that morning her white roadster was beside the curb, and she was sitting in it with a lieutenant I had never seen before. They were so engrossed in each other that she didn’t see me until I was five feet away.

어느날 뒤뜰을 돌아 오는데(came opposite) 하얀 로드스터가 연돌(the curb) 옆에 서 있었고 그녀와 처음 보는 어떤 중위가 앉아 있었어요. 그둘은 아주 서로 몰두해(engross) 있어서 내개 5피트(1.5미터)가까이 갈 때 까지도 눈치를 못 채더군요.

“Hello, Jordan,” she called unexpectedly. “Please come here.” I was flattered that she wanted to speak to me, because of all the older girls I admired her most.

"안녕, 조던, 이리 잠깐만 와줄래?" 그녀가 불렀죠. 그녀가 내게 할 말이 있다니 나는 우쭐해졌어요(be flattened, flatter=아첨하다.) 언니(older girls)들 중 그녀를 가장 동경했거든요.

She asked me if I was going to the Red Cross and make bandages. I was. Well, then, would I tell them that she couldn’t come that day?

적십자에 붕대 만들러 갈건지[전쟁 물자 만드는 봉사] 그녀가 내게 물었어요. 그렇다고 하니까(I was), 그렇담 그녀는 그날은 못 간다고 전해 달라고 했죠.

The officer looked at Daisy while she was speaking, in a way that every young girl wants to be looked at sometime, and because it seemed romantic to me I have remembered the incident ever since.

His name was Jay Gatsby, and I didn’t lay eyes on him again for over four years - even after I’d met him on Long Island I didn’t realize it was the same man.

그의 이름이 제이 게츠비 였어요. 나는 지난 4년간 그를 다시 못봤어요.(lay eyes on=~와 만나다) 심지어 그를 롱 아일랜드에서 만났을 때 조차 그를 같은 사람이라고 알아채지 못했으니까.

That was nineteen-seventeen. By the next year I had a few beaux myself, and I began to play in tournaments, so I didn’t see Daisy very often. She went with a slightly older crowd - when she went with anyone at all.

Wild rumors were circulating about her - how her mother had found her packing her bag one winter night to go to New York and say good-by to a soldier who was going overseas.

She was effectually prevented, but she wasn’t on speaking terms with her family for several weeks. After that she didn’t play around with the soldiers any more, but only with a few flat-footed, short-sighted young men in town, who couldn’t get into the army at all.

그녀는 확실히 차단되었고 몇주간 가족들과 말도(=speaking terms) 하지 않았다더군요. 그후 그녀는 군인들과 어울리지 않았고, 대신 평발(flat-footed) 근시(short-sight)인 시내의 군대 못가는 젊은 남자들과 어울렸다네요.

By the next autumn she was gay again, gay as ever. She had a debut after the Armistice, and in February she was presumably engaged to a man from New Orleans. In June she married Tom Buchanan of Chicago, with more pomp and circumstance than Louisville ever knew before.

He came down with a hundred people in four private cars, and hired a whole floor of the Seelbach Hotel, and the day before the wedding he gave her a string of pearls valued at three hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

I was bridesmaid. I came into her room half an hour before the bridal dinner, and found her lying on her bed as lovely as the June night in her flowered dress - and as drunk as a monkey. she had a bottle of Sauterne in one hand and a letter in the other.

나는 신부 들러리였어요. 신부저녁 정찬에 한시간 반 전에 그녀의 방에 갔지요. 그녀는 유월밤 만큼이나 아름다운 꽃으로 장식한 옷을 입고 그녀 침대에 누워 있더군요. 그런데 엄청 취했어요(drunk as a monkey). 한손에 소테른(Sauterne) 한병을 쥐고 다른 손에 편지가 쥐고 있었죠.

"What's the matter, Daisy?"

I was scared, I can tell you; I’d never seen a girl like that before.

나는 무섭기까지 했죠. 여자가 그렇게 취한 걸 본 적이 없었어요.

"Here, deares" She groped around in a waste-basket she had with her on the bed and pulled out the string of pearls. "Take 'em down-stairs and give ’em back to whoever they belong to. Tell 'em all Daisy's change' her mine. Say: 'Daisy’s change’ her mine!’.”

She began to cry—she cried and cried. I rushed out and found her mother’s maid, and we locked the door and got her into a cold bath. She wouldn’t let go of the letter. She took it into the tub with her and squeezed it up into a wet ball, and only let me leave it in the soap-dish when she saw that it was coming to pieces like snow.

But she didn’t say another word. We gave her spirits of ammonia and put ice on her forehead and hooked her back into her dress, and half an hour later, when we walked out of the room, the pearls were around her neck and the incident was over. Next day at five o’clock she married Tom Buchanan without so much as a shiver, and started off on a three months’ trip to the South Seas.

I saw them in Santa Barbara when they came back, and I thought I'd never seen a girl so mad about her husband. If he left the room for a minute she'd look around uneasily, and say: “Where’s Tom gone?” and wear the most abstracted expression until she saw him coming in the door.

산타 바바라에서 여행에서 돌아온 그녀를 만났어요. 내 생각에 그녀처럼 자기 남편에게 푹빠진(mad about) 여자를 만난적이 없어요. 그(남편)가 방에서 몇분만이라도 나가면 그녀는 불안해 보였어요(look uneasily). "톰 어디 갔지?" 라고 말하죠. 그가 다시 문앞에 온 것을 보기전까지 가장 멍한(abstracted:마음을 빼앗긴, 추상적인) 표정(expression)을 달고있죠(wear: 입다, 몸에 지니다).

She used to sit on the sand with his head in her lap by the hour, rubbing her fingers over his eyes and looking at him with unfathomable delight. It was touching to see them together—it made you laugh in a hushed, fascinated way.

머리를 무릅 사이에 파묻고(head in her lap) 모래밭에 앉아 한시간여 앉아 있었죠. 손가락으로 남편의 눈을 부비며 헤아릴길없는(unfathomable) 기쁨으로 남편을 바라봤어요. [남자에 대한 엄청난 집착이다.] 그들 둘이 있는 모습은 감동이었죠. 은밀히 환상적으로 웃음이 날 정도였어요.

That was in August. A week after I left Santa Barbara Tom ran into a wagon on the Ventura road one night, and ripped a front wheel off his car.

The girl who was with him got into the papers, too, because her arm was broken - she was one of the chambermaids in the Santa Barbara Hotel.

 같이있던 여자가 신문에 났어요. 팔이 부러졌거든요[큰 사고였다.] 그녀는 산타 바바라 호텔의 방하녀(chambermaid)중 하나였죠.

The next April Daisy had her little girl, and they went to France for a year. I saw them one spring in Cannes, and later in Deauville, and then they came back to Chicago to settle down. Daisy was popular in Chicago, as you know. They moved with a fast crowd, all of them young and rich and wild, but she came out with an absolutely perfect reputation.

다음해 4월에 데이지는 여자애를 낳았죠. 그리고 그들은 일년간 프랑스에 있었죠. 어느 봄에 칸느에서 그들을 만났어요. 그리고 도빌(Deauville)에서 만났고 정착하려고(settle down) 시카고로 왔죠. 당신도 알다시피 데이지는 시카고에 와서도 인기가 높았어요. 그들(데이지와 톰은) 빠르게 군중을 모았고(빠르게 상류사회의 일원이 되다) 전부 젊은 부자들이죠. 그녀는 완벽한 명성(=조숙한 여자라는)을 얻게 됐어요.

Perhaps because she doesn't drink. It’s a great advantage not to drink among hard-drinking people.

You can hold your tongue, and, moreover, you can time any little irregularity of your own so that everybody else is so blind that they don't see or care. Perhaps Daisy never went in for amour at all - and yet there’s something in that voice of hers ......

혀를 다잡을 수 있고(말조심), 게다가 자신의 약점을 보이는 때(time)가 전혀 없어서(any little) 모두의 관심에서 멀어지죠. 아마 데이지는 절대 염문에 말리지(go in for amour) 않을 겁니다. 하지만 그녀의 목소리 속에는.....

Well, about six weeks ago, she heard the name Gatsby for the first time in years.

그런데 말이죠. 약 육주전에 그녀는 수년이래 처음으로 게츠비라는 이름을 듣게 됐어요.

It was when I asked you - do you remember? - if you knew Gatsby in West Egg. After you had gone home she came into my room and woke me up, and said: "What Gatsby?" and when I described him - I was half asleep - she said in the strangest voice that it must be the man she used to know. It wasn't until then that I connected this Gatsby with the officer in her white car.

When Jordan Baker had finished telling all this we had left the Plaza for half an hour and were driving in a victoria through Central Park. The sun had gone down behind the tall apartments of the movie stars in the West Fifties, and the clear voices of girls, already gathered like crickets on the grass, rose through the hot twilight:

"It was a strange coincidence," I said.

Then it had not been merely the stars to which he had aspired on that June night. He came alive to me, delivered suddenly from the womb of his purposeless splendor.

"He wants to know," continued Jordan, "if you'll invite Daisy to your house some afternoon and then let him come over."

The modesty of the demand shook me. He had waited five years and bought a mansion where he dispensed starlight to casual moths - so that he could "come over." some afternoon to a stranger’s garden.

Something worried me.

뭔가 꺼림칙했다.

"Why didn't he ask you to arrange a meeting?"

"왜 그는 당신에게 만남약속을 주선해달라고 하지 않죠?"

"He wants her to see his house," she explained. "And your house is right next door."

"I think he half expected her to wander into one of his parties, some night," went on Jordan, "but she never did.

It was dark now, and as we dipped under a little bridge I put my arm around Jordan's golden shoulder and drew her toward me and asked her to dinner

Suddenly I wasn't thinking of Daisy and Gatsby any more, but of this clean, hard, limited person, who dealt in universal scepticism, and who leaned back jauntily just within the circle of my arm.

갑자기 나는 데이지나 게츠비를 더이상 생각하지 않았다. 그대신 투명하고, 어렵던, 이 어쩔 수 없는 사람(limited person=닉에게 도도해서 멀기만해 보였던 조던 베이커가 이제 보통 사람 같아보였다), 온갖 도도함(universal scepticism)에 도취되었던(dealt in) 사람, 그리고 이제 내게 가벼이(jauntily: 경쾌히)기대어[나한테 청을 해오고 있으니] 내 팔의 범위에 있게된 사람(=조던)을 생각했다.

We passed a barrier of dark trees, and then the facade of Fifty-ninth Street, a block of delicate pale light, beamed down into the park.

A dead man passed us in a hearse heaped with blooms, followed by two carriages with drawn blinds, and by more cheerful carriages for friends. The friends looked out at us with the tragic eyes and short upper lips of southeastern Europe, and I was glad that the sight of Gatsby’s splendid car was included in their sombre holiday.

꽃으로 덮힌(heaped) 영구차(hearse)에 죽은 사람이 지나간다. 차양(blind)를 내린 두대 차량(two carriages)이 따라간다. 그리고 [앞선 영구차나 차양을 내린 유족의 차보다] 좀더 활기찬 친구들의 차가 따른다. 비극적인 눈을 하고 윗잎술이 얇은 남유럽 [출신]인 들이 우리를 내다봤다. 게츠비의 멋진[밝은색] 차의 모습이 그들의 우울한(sombre) 휴일에 포함 된것 같아 기뻣다.

As we crossed Blackwell’s Island a limousine passed us, driven by a white chauffeur, in which sat three modish negroes, two bucks and a girl. I laughed aloud as the yolks of their eyeballs rolled toward us in haughty rivalry.

블랙웰 섬을 지날때, 한 리무진이 우리를 지나쳤다/백인 운전수가 몰고간다/세명의 유행을 따르는(modish) 흑인이 앉아있다/숫놈(buck) 둘과 한 여자애. 그들의 눈알의 노른자위(yolk)가 건방진(haughty) 경쟁투로 우리를 부라리자 나는 크게 웃었다.

Roaring noon. In a well -- fanned Forty-second Street cellar I met Gatsby for lunch. Blinking away the brightness of the street outside, my eyes picked him out obscurely in the anteroom, talking to another man.

A small, flat-nosed Jew raised his large head and regarded me with two fine growths of hair which luxuriated in either nostril. After a moment I discovered his tiny eyes in the half-darkness.

Gatsby took an arm of each of us and moved forward into the restaurant, whereupon Mr. Wolfsheim swallowed a new sentence he was starting and lapsed into a somnambulatory abstraction.

게츠비가 우리둘을 양팔로 안고 식당 안으로 향해 움직였다. 울프샴씨는 새로 할말을 삼키고는 멍한 상태(somnambulatory abstraction=벙쪘다)가 되었다(lapsed into~).

[somnambulatory: 몽유병의/눈치없이 갱단이 할 법한 언사를 하자 겨우 인상을 바꿔보자고 노력한 게츠비는 울프샴의 말을 막아섰다. 울프샴은 평소와 다른 게츠비의 행동에 벙쪘다.]

The juxtaposition of these two remarks was startling. Gatsby answered for me:

두 이야기[전기의자에 이어 사업껀수]를 병치(juxtaposition)시켜서 놀랐다. 게츠비가 나 대신 대답했다

"Oh, no," he exclaimed, "this isn't the man."

"아니, 이 친구는 그사람 아닙니다"

"No?" Mr. Wolfsheim seemed disappointed.

"아냐?" 울프샴이 실망 했다는 듯이 말했다.

“This is just a friend. I told you we’d talk about that some other time.”

"이 사람은 그냥 친구예요. 그껀에 대해서는 따로 말씀드리기로 했잖아요."

I think that, except for my presence, he would have taken one short glance beneath our own table.

내가 없었다면 테이블 아래도 슬쩍 살펴봤을 거라는 생각이 들었다.

"Look here, old sport," said Gatsby, leaning toward me, "I'm afraid I made you a little angry this morning in the car."

"이봐 친구," 게츠비가 내게 기울이며 말했다. "오늘 아침에 내가 차안에서 언짢게 하진 않았는지 걱정이네?"

There was the smile again, but this time I held out against it.

Suddenly he looked at his watch, jumped up, and hurried from the room, leaving me with Mr. Wolfsheim at the table.

"He has to telephone," said Mr. Wolfsheim, following him with his eyes. "Fine fellow, isn't he? Handsome to look at and a perfect gentleman."

"그가 전화를 해야 할거야" 울프샴씨가 눈은 그(=게츠비)를 따라가며 말했다. "괜찮은 사람이지, 안그런가?"

"Yes."

"그렇죠."

"He’s an Oggsford man."

"옥스포드 출신라네"

When the subject of this instinctive trust returned to the table and sat down Mr. Wolfsheim drank his coffee with a jerk and got to his feet.

"I have enjoyed my lunch," he said, "and I'm going to run off from you two young men before I outstay my welcome."

"점심 즐거웠네" 그가 말했다. "두 젊은이로부터 떠나야겠어. 나의 환영을 넘어 머물기 전에(나의 환대가 가시기 전에)"

"Don't hurry, Meyer," said Gatsby, without enthusiasm. Mr. Wolfsheim raised his hand in a sort of benediction.

At nine o’clock, one morning late in July, Gatsby’s gorgeous car lurched up the rocky drive to my door and gave out a burst of melody from its three-noted horn.

This quality was continually breaking through his punctilious manner in the shape of restlessness. He was never quite still; there was always a tapping foot somewhere or the impatient opening and closing of a hand.

Sitting down behind many layers of glass in a sort of green leather conservatory, we started to town.

I had talked with him perhaps half a dozen times in the past month and found, to my disappointment, that he had little to say: So my first impression, that he was a person of some undefined consequence, had gradually faded and he had become simply the proprietor of an elaborate road-house next door.

And then came that disconcerting ride. We hadn’t reached West Egg village before Gatsby began leaving his elegant sentences unfinished and slapping himself indecisively on the knee of his caramel-colored suit.

So he was aware of the bizarre accusations that flavored conversation in his halls.

It was a photograph of half a dozen young men in blazers loafing in an archway through which were visible a host of spires. There was Gatsby, looking a little, not much, younger--with a cricket bat in his hand.

블레이져(blazer: 조끼)를 입은 대여섯 명의 젊은이 들이 뽀족탑(spire)의 몸통(host)이 보이는 아치 길(archway) 사이로 어슬렁거리는(loafing) 단체사진이었다. 그 사이에 다소 작은 젊은 게츠비가 크리켓 방망이를 들고 서있는 사진이었다.

Then it was all true. I saw the skins of tigers flaming in his palace on the Grand Canal; I saw him opening a chest of rubies to ease, with their crimson-lighted depths, the gnawings of his broken heart.

그런데 그것은 모두 진짜였다. 나는 대운하(Grand Canal)에 있는 그의 궁전에서 불을 뿜는 호랑이 가죽을 봤다. 그가 상처받은 마음의 괴로움(gnaw: ~괴롭히다, 쏠다)을 위안하려고(=to ease) 선홍색(crimson-light depth) 루비의 가슴[깊이 숨겨둔 이야기를 꺼내다.]을 연다는 것을 알았다.

['불타는 호랑이 가죽'은 허세(=호랑이)를 벗어던지는 모습이다. 게츠비는 겉으로는 강한척 하지만 상처받은 마음을 가지고 있다. 닉이 자기 마음을 알아준다는 느낌을 받자 게츠비는 자기 상처(=선홍색 마음)을 열어보이며 뭔가 부탁을 하려고 한다.]

"I'm going to make a big request of you to-day," he said, pocketing his souvenirs with satisfaction, "so I thought you ought to know something about me. I didn't want you to think I was just some nobody.

I hadn’t the faintest idea what "this matter." was, but I was more annoyed than interested. I hadn’t asked Jordan to tea in order to discuss Mr. Jay Gatsby. I was sure the request would be something utterly fantastic, and for a moment I was sorry I’d ever set foot upon his overpopulated lawn.

나는 '이껀'에 대해 희미한 기억조차 없었고 호기심 보다는 짜증이 났다. 나는 조던에게 제이 게츠비씨와 상의하자고 얘기한 적이 없었다. 나는 이 요청이 완전히 황당한 것일지 모른다는(would be ~) 확신이 들었고 잠깐동안 내가 그의 북적대는 잔디밭(overpopulated lawn=게츠비의 파티)에 발을 들여놨다는 것이 불쾌했다. [괸시리 게츠비와 그의 주변에 엮이게 된 것 같아 짜증이 났다.]

He wouldn’t say another word. His correctness grew on him as we neared the city. We passed Port Roosevelt, where there was a glimpse of red-belted ocean-going ships, and sped along a cobbled slum lined with the dark, undeserted saloons of the faded-gilt nineteen-hundreds.

이어서 재의 계곡이 우리의 양옆으로 펼쳐졌다. 우리가 지나갈 때 윌슨 부인이 주유 펌프(=the garage pump) 옆에서 헐떡거리는(panting) 생동감으로 힘주고(straining) 있는 것을 언뜻 봤다.

흙받이를 마치 날개처럼 펼치며[=과속을 함],  아스토리아 가의 절반 가량의 불빛을 흐트려 놓았다[과속으로 달리며 길가의 상점들에 켜진 불빛들을 보면 흐트러져 보인다.]

고상[열차]길(the elevated railway)의 기둥(pillar)을 휘젖고 돌아(twisted along~) 아스토리아 가의 겨우 절반 정도 왔을때 "적~적~스팻" 친숙한 모터 싸이클의 소리가 들렸다. 화난(frantic) 경찰이 탄 모터싸이클이 옆에 따라 붙었다.

“All right, old sport,” called Gatsby. We slowed down. Taking a white card from his wallet, he waved it before the man’s eyes.

"좋아, 친구." 게츠비가 [허공에] 소리쳤다(call). 우리는 속도를 줄였다. 그의 지갑에서 하얀 카드를 꺼내 남자(경찰)의 눈앞에서 흔들었다.

"Right you are," agreed the policeman, tipping his cap. "Know you next time, Mr. Gatsby. Excuse ME!"

"그렇군요," 경찰이 그의 모자를 슬쩍 들고(tipping his cap=거수경례를 붙이고) 알아보는 체 했다(=agree). "다음 번에는 알아 뵙지요, 게츠비씨. 실례 했습니다."

"What was that?" I inquired.

"그게 뭐죠?" 내가 물었다.

"The picture of Oxford?"

"옥스포드 사진 인가요?" [옥스포드 사진이 왜? 닉은 상황을 다 짐작 하면서 엉뚱한 말을 한다. 약간 비꼬는 투다.]

"I was able to do the commissioner a favor once, and he sends me a Christmas card every year."

"서장(the commissioner)에게 호의를 베풀어 줬더니 매년 크리스마스카드를 보내지 뭐야"

Over the great bridge, with the sunlight through the girders making a constant flicker upon the moving cars, with the city rising up across the river in white heaps and sugar lumps all built with a wish out of non-olfactory money.

커다란 다리위에 지나가는 차들 위로 지지보(girder) 사이에서 [교각이 교차하는 사이에서] 햇볕이 끝없이 반짝이고 강건너 도시가 하얗게 쌓여있고 설탕 덩어리들이 구린내(non-olfactory) 안나길(out of~) 바라는 돈으로 지어졌다.

  

[경찰의 비리를 목격한 닉은 겉으로 멀끔해 보이지만 속으로 온갖 비리가 난무하는 도시에 대한 느낌이 새삼 스럽다.]

The city seen from the Queensboro Bridge is always the city seen for the first time, in its first wild promise of all the mystery and the beauty in the world.

퀸즈보로 다리에서 본 도시는 세상의 거친 신비함과 아름다움으로 보여 볼때마다 낮설다.
