Commerce is unexpectedly confident and serene(고요,침착), alert(주의,조심), adventurous(모험), and unwearied(지치지않음,끈질김). It is very natural in its methods withal(게다가), far more(훨씬 더 [좋다]) so than[...보다도] many fantastic enterprises(환상적 기획) and sentimental experiments(감성적 실험), and hence its(상업) singular(유일한,독보적) success(성공을 거뒀다).

상업은 예외없이 확신에 차있고 침착하며 조심스러운데다 모험심 있고 지치지 않는다. 게다가 그 방법에 있어서도 아주 자연 스러우며 환상적 기획(꿈같은 공약)과 감성적 실험(미래 기술 따위의)보다도 훨씬 좋다.[확실히 쏘로우는 중상주의, 실용주의자다]

This car-load of torn sails is more legible(읽을수 있는) and interesting now than if they(화물들) should be wrought into paper and printed books. Who can write so graphically the history of the storms they(화물들) have weathered as these rents have done?

문학이라니!  이렇게 산만한 문장을 원어민은 읽고 그 의미를 금방 알아채리는 지 은근히 의문이 든다. 하기야 한글 문장이라고 다 이해되는것은 아닐테니. 두가지 번역본을 살짝 엿봤지만 동의하지 못할 부분이 있다. 나름대로 해석한 부분도 있으니 주의바람.

What recommends commerce to me is its enterprise and bravery. It does not clasp(꽉쥐다) its hands and pray to Jupiter. I see these men every day go about their business with more or less courage and content(자신), doing more even than they suspect, and perchance(어쩌면) better employed than they could have consciously devised.

The startings and arrivals of the cars are now the epochs in the village day(기차의 도착과 출발이 이 마을의 중요한 역사적 사건[epoch]이다). 매일 아침 지나가는 기차를 보노라면 마치 제시간에 해가 뜨는 것을 보는 듯하다. 기차시간이 가끔 연착하기도 하지만... 보스턴행 열차가 남긴 기다린 연기는 태양을 잠시 가리고 그림자를 내 밭 멀리까지 드리운다. 달리는 기차에 걸려 하늘 높이 올라가는 연기가 천상의 열차 같다. 대지를 달리는 증기 기차가 마치 천상의 열차를 창의 미늘에 꿰고 대지를 달르는 듯하다.



The stabler(마굿간지기) of the iron horse was up early this winter morning by the light of the stars amid[~사이에] the mountains, to fodder(사료를 주고) and harness(마구를 달고) his steed[경주마]. 불붙은 철마는 주인이 쉬고자하는 경우 빼고는 종일 전국토를 누빈다. 저먼 산속 계곡에서 철마가 어름과 눈에 쌓인 방해물을 만나 식식거리는 소리에 한밤중에 깬다. 오직 새벽별과 함께 마굿간에 도착하게 될테고 쉼 없이 또 새로운 여행을 시작한다.

Or perchance(어쩌면), at evening, I hear him in his stable blowing off the superfluous energy of the day, that he may calm his nerves(그의 신경을 재우고) and cool his liver and brain(그의 폐와 두뇌를 식힌다) for a few hours of iron slumber[철의 선잠=기차의 휴식]. The whistle of the locomotive penetrates my woods summer and winter, sounding like the scream of a hawk sailing over some farmer’s yard, informing me that many restless[불안한/흥분한] city merchants are arriving within the circle of the town(들뜬 도시의 상인들이 이 마을 안으로 들어왔다), or adventurous country traders from the other side(다른 한편에서 모험심에 찬 시골 교역자)[restless city merchants<>adventurous country traders].

As they come under one horizon(한 지평선 아래에서 떠오른 듯이), they shout their warning to get off the track to the other(서로에게 길을 비키라며 경고하듯 소리친다), heard sometimes through the circles of two towns(두 마을[도시<>시골]의 영역넘어 들리는 듯하다).

—with its steam cloud like a banner streaming behind in golden and silver wreaths[화환],

마치 금과 은의 화환[wreath]을 흘리며 기치[banner]를 내건듯이 증기구름을 달고,

like many a downy[푹신한] cloud which I have seen, high in the heavens(하늘 높은 곳에서 본듯한), unfolding its masses to the light(불빛에 구름의 몸체[=증기운]을 펼치는 모습이 마치 폭신한 구름 같다),

—as if this travelling demigod(마치 여행하는 반신[=열차]), this cloud-compeller(이 구름의 지배자[=열차]는), would ere[~하기전에] long take the sunset sky for the livery[제복] of his train(늦기전에 석양을 자신의 제복으로 삼으려는[take~ for~] 듯이[as if].);

여행하는 반신, 구름의 지배자는 서둘러 석양을 그 자신 열차의 제복으로 삼으려 하는 듯하다.

when I hear the iron horse make the hills echo with his snort[콧바람/흡입하다] like thunder, shaking the earth with his feet(발로 지축을 흔들며), and breathing fire and smoke(불과 연기를 호흡하며) from his nostrils[콧구멍],

지축을 흔들고 불과 연기를 내뿜으며 천둥처럼 메아리를 울리는 철마의 소리를 듣고 있자니

 (what kind of winged horse or fiery dragon they[불특정다수를 지칭] will put into the new Mythology I don’t know,)

(그 누구라도 어떤 천마나 불뿜는 용으로 새로운 신화를 만들어 낼지 모르지만)

it seems as if the earth had got a race now worthy to inhabit it.

지구는 그곳에 거주할 자격이 있는 새로운 인종[race=기차]을 가지게 된 듯하다.

If all were as it seems(모든게 원래 있었어야 했던 것[열차가 지구에 생겨난 것이 전혀 이상하지 않다]), and men made the elements their servants for noble ends! (인간은 고귀한 목적[noble ends]를 위해 그 요소들[=철도 체계]을 그들의 하인으로 삼았던 것이다!)

If the cloud that hangs over the engine were the perspiration[땀/결실] of heroic deeds[공적], or as beneficent to men as that which floats over the farmer’s fields,

기관차 위에 걸린 구름이 영웅적 공적의 땀이었다면 혹은 농부의 들판위에 떠다니는 인간에게 도움되는[유용한] 것[=구름] 처럼. [기관차의 증기구름을 들판을 적시는 비를 내려주는 유용한 구름에 비유함]

then the elements and Nature herself would cheerfully accompany men on their errands and be their escort.

그 요소들과 자연은 기꺼이 호위자[escort]기 되어 인간의 심부름꾼[errand]에 합류 할 것이다.

In August, the large masses of berries, which, when in flower, had attracted many wild bees(꽃이었을 때 수많은 벌들을 끌어모으던 베리) , gradually assumed their bright velvety crimson hue(베리의 커다란 열매[masses]는 차츰 본래[their]의 밝은 부드러운 자주색조를 띄어가고), and by their weight again bent down(그 [베리의] 무게에[앞 문장에서 열매를 중량감 있는 단어 mass 표현됨]휘어져서) and broke the tender limbs(약한 줄기를 부러뜨렸다).

As I sit at my window this summer afternoon, hawks are circling about my clearing[개간지]; the tantivy[돌진] of wild pigeons(하늘을 맴돌던 매가 야생 비둘기를 덮침), flying by twos and threes athwart[~을 가로질러] my view, or perching restless on the white-pine boughs behind my house(내 집뒤 백송의 큰가지에 한없이[restless] 자리잡고 앉다), gives a voice to the air([give의 주어는 매] 창공에 소리를 남기다[하늘을 맴돌고, 한둘씩 짝지어 시야를 가로질러 날고, 집뒤 백송 가지에 앉고, 창공에 소리를 남긴 것은 모두 매);

a fish-hawk dimples the glassy surface of the pond and brings up a fish((물수리[fish-hawk]가 거울같은 호수 표면위에 잔물결을 일게[dimple: 보조개/움푹들어가다/잔물결을 일게하다] 하는가 싶더니 물고기를 건져올렸다[한 장면을 and로 이어진 두 문장으로 표현/서사적]);

a mink steals out of the marsh before my door and seizes a frog by the shore(족제비[mink] 한마리가 내집 문앞의 습지에서 몰래 나와[steal:도둑질하다/몰래 움직이다;도루] 물가에서 개구리 한마리를 잡았다);

the sedge[사초류 식물] is bending under the weight of the reed(사초들이 갈대의 무게에 짖눌렸다)-birds flitting[야반도주] hither and thither[여기저기로](새들이 여기저기로 바삐 움직임);

and for the last half hour I have heard the rattle[덜그럭거리는 소리] of railroad cars, now dying away and then reviving like the beat of a partridge[들꿩], conveying travellers from Boston to the country.



For I did not live so out of the world (은둔 생활하고 있지 않았다.) as that boy, who, as I hear(내가 듣기로...), was put out to [수동형] a farmer in the east part of the town(마을의 동쪽에 사는 한 농부에게 끌려간[be put out to~: 수동형으로 '소년이 유괴 당하다']), but ere[...하기전에] long ran away([소년을 유괴한 농부가]멀리 도망가기 전에) and came home again, quite down at the heel(매우 초췌하고) and homesick(향수병까지 걸림).

[내가 숲으로 들어와 살긴 하지만 유괴된 소년처럼 초최하고 향수병에 걸릴만큼 심하게 고립되었던 것은 아니다.]

He had never seen such a dull and out-of-the-way place(그[돌아온 소년]은 어런 어처구니 없는 경우를 본적이 없다); the folks were all gone off(친척들은 모두 떠났다); why, you couldn’t even hear the whistle(열차 기적소리조차 들리지 않은 곳)! I doubt if there is such a place in Massachusetts now(아직도 메사추세츠 주에 이런 [외진]곳이 남아 있을까?) :—

"In truth, our village has become a butt

For one of those fleet railroad shafts, and o'er [over]

The Fitchburg Railroad touches[닿아있다] the pond about a hundred rods[자/단위?] south of where I dwell. I usually go to the village along its causeway[둑길], and am, as it were[있는 그대로], related to society(사회와 관계해있다) by this link[연결고리=causeway][연결고리를 가지고 있으므로 고립되어 있지 않다]. The men on the freight trains, who go over the whole length of the road(전구간을 오가는), bow to me as to an old acquaintance[알고지냄], they pass me so often(자주 지나쳤다), and apparently(분명히, 겉으로) they take me for an employee(take~for~:나를 종업원으로 여기다); and so I am(나도 아닌척 하진 않았다). I too would fain[기꺼이] be a track-repairer somewhere in the orbit of the earth(지구 궤도[orbit]의 어느 곳에서 궤도[track] 수리공 일 테니까).
