I watch the passage of the morning cars with the same feeling that I do the rising of the sun(아침 기차가 지나가는 것을 아침에 [때맟춰 뜨는]태양을 보는 듯한 느낌), which is hardly more regular(아침에 기차가 지나가는 시간이 해뜨는 것 만큼 딱맞다고[regular] 할 수 없음.). Their train of clouds[구름띠] stretching far behind and rising higher and higher, going to heaven while the cars are going to Boston, [their train of clouds] conceals the sun([구름 띠가]태양을 가리다) for a minute and([동시묘사 접속사]~하면서) [Their train of clouds] casts my distant field into the shade(먼 내 밭위에 그림자를 드리우다), a celestial train(천상의 기차=연기띠) beside([지구를 품은 작은 열차]~대신) which the petty train of cars(작은 열차) which hugs the earth(지구를 품은[hug]) is but the barb of the spear(천상의 열차[=하늘 높이 오르는 기차연기 띠]는 창의 미늘이다.).

Their train of clouds conceals~ and cats~,

아침 열차를 보노라면 태양이 떠오르는 것처럼 제때에 지나가는 느낌이다. 보스턴 행 기차의 뒤로 멀리까지 이어진 기차 연기[their train of clouds]는 태양을 가려 내 밭에 그림자를 드리우는데 하늘 높이 올라 마치 천상의 열차 같다.

대지 위를 달리는[hug: 품은] 작은 기차는 창의 미늘(barb: 가시)인 대신에(beside~) 기차연기(train of clouds)(는) 천상의 열차(a celestial train)다.

* train of clouds 와 celestial train 를 동격으로 봤다. 장면을 상상해서 나름 해석을 해보면...

매일 아침 지나가는 기차를 보노라면 마치 제시간에 해가 뜨는 것을 보는 듯하다. 기차시간이 가끔 연착하기도 하지만... 보스턴행 열차가 남긴 기다린 연기는 태양을 잠시 가리고 그림자를 내 밭 멀리까지 드리운다. 달리는 기차에 걸려 하늘 높이 올라가는 연기가 천상의 열차 같다. 대지를 달리는 증기 기차가 마치 천상의 열차를 창의 미늘에 꿰고 대지를 달르는 듯하다.



The stabler(마굿간지기) of the iron horse was up early this winter morning by the light of the stars amid[~사이에] the mountains, to fodder(사료를 주고) and harness(마구를 달고) his steed[경주마]. Fire, too, was awakened thus early to put the vital heat in him(=iron horse) and get him off. (철마에 생기[vital heat]를 넣을 불을 깨어내다.) If the enterprise were as innocent as it is early! (임무가 이렇게 일렀던[서두른] 만큼 그 임무도 순수했었 더라면[if~were~: 좋았을 것을/가정법 과거사실 반대]!)



If the snow lies deep, they strap on his snowshoes(눈신발), and with the giant plough, plough(쟁기질하다) a furrow(도랑) from the mountains to the seaboard, in which the cars, like a following drill barrow[씨뿌리는 손수레], sprinkle all the restless men(분주한 사람들) and floating merchandise(넘쳐나는 상품들) in the country(나라 전체에) for seed(씨앗 삼아).

All day the fire-steed(불붙은 준마=기차) flies over the country(전국토를 누비다), stopping only that his master may rest(주인이 쉴때 만 정차), and I am awakened by his tramp(킁킁거리며 돌아다님) and defiant snort(방항적인 흡입하는 소리) at midnight, when in some remote glen(계곡) in the woods he(=불붙은 열차) fronts the elements incased in ice and snow(얼음과 눈에 덮인 방해물[=the elements]); and he will reach his stall(칸막이,마굿간) only with the morning star, to start once more on his travels without rest or slumber(선잠).

불붙은 철마는 주인이 쉬고자하는 경우 빼고는 종일 전국토를 누빈다. 저먼 산속 계곡에서 철마가 어름과 눈에 쌓인 방해물을 만나 식식거리는 소리에 한밤중에 깬다. 오직 새벽별과 함께 마굿간에 도착하게 될테고 쉼 없이 또 새로운 여행을 시작한다.

Or perchance(어쩌면), at evening, I hear him in his stable blowing off the superfluous energy of the day, that he may calm his nerves(그의 신경을 재우고) and cool his liver and brain(그의 폐와 두뇌를 식힌다) for a few hours of iron slumber[철의 선잠=기차의 휴식]. If the enterprise were as heroic and commanding as it is protracted(질질끌다,연장하다) and unwearied! (그 임무[=철마가 쉬지 않고 달려야 했던 일]가 계속되고 지치지 않을 만큼 영웅적이고 당당한 것이었더라면[좋았을것을]!)
