The whistle of the locomotive penetrates my woods summer and winter, sounding like the scream of a hawk sailing over some farmer’s yard, informing me that many restless[불안한/흥분한] city merchants are arriving within the circle of the town(들뜬 도시의 상인들이 이 마을 안으로 들어왔다), or adventurous country traders from the other side(다른 한편에서 모험심에 찬 시골 교역자)[restless city merchants<>adventurous country traders].
As they come under one horizon(한 지평선 아래에서 떠오른 듯이), they shout their warning to get off the track to the other(서로에게 길을 비키라며 경고하듯 소리친다), heard sometimes through the circles of two towns(두 마을[도시<>시골]의 영역넘어 들리는 듯하다).
[상인들의 외치는 소리] Here come your groceries[식료품/잡화], country; your rations[보급품], countrymen(시골사람들아, 여기에 식료품들이 있어요)!
[시골 농부들의 돈내는 소리] Nor is there any man so independent on his farm that he can say them nay(안사요[nay]라고 말할 만큼 아주 독립적인[자급자족하는] 농부는 없으니). And here’s your pay for them! (그래서 물건[them] 값 여기 있소!)
Screams the countryman’s whistle(시골 사람들의 외침); timber[목재] like long[마치 긴] battering rams[성벽 부수는 무기] going twenty miles an hour[시속 20마일로 달리는] against the city’s walls[도시의 성벽을 향해], and chairs enough to seat all the weary and heavy laden that dwell within them.
With such huge and lumbering[제재업/볼품없는] civility[정중함/점잖은 행위] the country hands a chair to the city(시골 사람들 스스로 도시로 몰려감/hand A to B: A를 B로 넘기다).

All the Indian huckleberry[월귤나무] hills are stripped(벌초되다), all the cranberry meadows(크랜베리 덩굴) are raked(긁어모드다) into the city. [초목 훼손과 도시화/시골땅 팔아서 도시로?]
Up comes the cotton, down goes the woven cloth(면화는 도시로 올라가고 직조된 천은 시골로 내려오고);
up comes the silk, down goes the woollen(견사는 도시로 양모는 시골로);
up come the books, but down goes the wit[작가] that writes them.([그런데] 책은 도시로, 그책을 쓴 작가는 시골로)
When I meet the engine[기관차] with its train of cars[여러 객차가 달린 열차] moving off with planetary motion[행성운동/노선따라 왕복운행을 빛댐],
여러 객차를 단 기관차가 행성운행(정기노선)을 하는 모습을 보면,
—or, rather, like a comet, for the beholder[구경꾼] knows not if with that velocity and with that direction(그런[겉으로 보기에] 속도와 방향으로) it will ever revisit this system(이 체제[system;궤도 운행]로 다시 방문할 지), since its orbit does not look like a returning curve,
아니, 열차가 달리는 속도와 방향을 보고있는 [열차운행 체계를 모르는 단순한] 구경꾼은 다시 돌아오리라고 알 지 못하므로 차라리 혜성이라고 하는 편이 났겠다.[언재 돌아올지 모르는 혜성의 궤도를 감안해보자.]
—with its steam cloud like a banner streaming behind in golden and silver wreaths[화환],
마치 금과 은의 화환[wreath]을 흘리며 기치[banner]를 내건듯이 증기구름을 달고,
like many a downy[푹신한] cloud which I have seen, high in the heavens(하늘 높은 곳에서 본듯한), unfolding its masses to the light(불빛에 구름의 몸체[=증기운]을 펼치는 모습이 마치 폭신한 구름 같다),
—as if this travelling demigod(마치 여행하는 반신[=열차]), this cloud-compeller(이 구름의 지배자[=열차]는), would ere[~하기전에] long take the sunset sky for the livery[제복] of his train(늦기전에 석양을 자신의 제복으로 삼으려는[take~ for~] 듯이[as if].);
여행하는 반신, 구름의 지배자는 서둘러 석양을 그 자신 열차의 제복으로 삼으려 하는 듯하다.
when I hear the iron horse make the hills echo with his snort[콧바람/흡입하다] like thunder, shaking the earth with his feet(발로 지축을 흔들며), and breathing fire and smoke(불과 연기를 호흡하며) from his nostrils[콧구멍],
지축을 흔들고 불과 연기를 내뿜으며 천둥처럼 메아리를 울리는 철마의 소리를 듣고 있자니
(what kind of winged horse or fiery dragon they[불특정다수를 지칭] will put into the new Mythology I don’t know,)
(그 누구라도 어떤 천마나 불뿜는 용으로 새로운 신화를 만들어 낼지 모르지만)
it seems as if the earth had got a race now worthy to inhabit it.
지구는 그곳에 거주할 자격이 있는 새로운 인종[race=기차]을 가지게 된 듯하다.
If all were as it seems(모든게 원래 있었어야 했던 것[열차가 지구에 생겨난 것이 전혀 이상하지 않다]), and men made the elements their servants for noble ends! (인간은 고귀한 목적[noble ends]를 위해 그 요소들[=철도 체계]을 그들의 하인으로 삼았던 것이다!)
If the cloud that hangs over the engine were the perspiration[땀/결실] of heroic deeds[공적], or as beneficent to men as that which floats over the farmer’s fields,
기관차 위에 걸린 구름이 영웅적 공적의 땀이었다면 혹은 농부의 들판위에 떠다니는 인간에게 도움되는[유용한] 것[=구름] 처럼. [기관차의 증기구름을 들판을 적시는 비를 내려주는 유용한 구름에 비유함]
then the elements and Nature herself would cheerfully accompany men on their errands and be their escort.
그 요소들과 자연은 기꺼이 호위자[escort]기 되어 인간의 심부름꾼[errand]에 합류 할 것이다.
