For my part, I could easily do without the post-office.
내 경우 우체국 없이도 잘 지낼 수 있을 것 같다.
I think that there are very few important communications made through it.
우체국을 통해서(through it) 교환되는 매우 중요한 정보(communications)는 거의 없다고(very few) 생각한다.
To speak critically, I never received more than one or two letters in my life—I wrote this some years ago—that were worth the postage.
비판적으로 (솔직히) 말하면 전에도 이에 대해 얘기한 적이 있는데 내 일생에 우표값 하는(worth the postage) 편지를 한 두장 이상 받아본 적이 없다.
The penny-post is, commonly, an institution through which you seriously offer a man that penny for his thoughts (,and) which is so often safely offered in jest.
이제 널리 퍼진 "한푼 우편"는 농담삼아 여러번 언급되었고 한푼으로 누군가의 사상을 전달 받을 수 있다는 제도다(through an institution).

아주 여러번 부담없이(safely) 농담삼아(in jest) 제안된 (제도),

And I am sure that I never read any memorable news in a newspaper.
그리고 장담컨데 신문에서 기억할 만한 새소식을 읽어본 적이 없다.
기타등등.... 이런 걸 우리는 또 찾아(of another) 읽지 않는다.
* 사회적 현상, 견해, 사상들 이라면 따로 더 찾아 볼 수도 있겠지만 소위 '새소식'이라고 하는 자잘한 사건들은 그냥 한번 읽고 말 일이다.
One is enough. If you are acquainted with the principle, what do you care for a myriad instances and applications?
(잡다한 사건은)한번이면 족하다. 만일 원리를 확실하게 꿰고 있다(be acquainted with~)면 무수한(myriad) 경우(instance)와 사례(application)를 상관할 필요가 있을까?
* 원리를 완벽히 이해 했다면 이를 설명하기 위해 이런 저런 사례를 붙이는 것은 사족이다. 두말하면 잔소리.

철학자(생각할 줄 아는 사람)에게 모든 뉴스는 소위 말해서 잡기(gossip)일 뿐이고, 소식을 읽고 편집(edit, 각색)하는 사람들(they=old women)은 찻잔을 사이에 둔 늙은 여자들 뿐이다.
* 신문에 난 기사라는 것이 한가한 여자들의 수다 꺼리일 뿐이다(여성비하?).

신문에 잡기가 실리면 적지않은 사람들이(not a few) 게걸 스러워진다.

탄탄한 기지(ready wit)를 가지고 숙고해본(seriously think) 새소식은 상당한 정확도로 열두달(일년)이나 10여년 전에 쓸 수도 있는 것들이다.
* 조금만 신중히 생각해보면 뻔한 기사들이 넘쳐난다.

(뻔한 잡기 기사)일예로 스페인의 경우 종종(from time to time) 적절한 비율로(in the right proportions) 돈 카를로스와 인판타(스페인의 귀족과 공주), 돈페드로와 세빌과 그라나다-이 이름들이 내가 신문에서 보았던 이후 지금은 바뀌었는지 모르겠다-등을 섞어넣고(throw in) 흥미거리가 떨어지면(entertainments fail) 투우를 첨가하여 내놓을(serve up, 요리를 제공하다) 줄 만 안다면 글자 그대로(to the letter) 사실이 될 것이며 스페인의 정확한 상황과 붕괴(ruin of thing)에 대한 상상(idea)에 버금가는(as good as ~) 신문의 머릿기사 아래에 놓일 간결(succinct)하고 명쾌한(lucid) 보도를 제공 할 것이다.

그리고, 잉글랜드로 말할 것 같으면 대부분 지나간 신문 스크랩의 사분의 정도가 1649년의 혁명(영국 내전 종료와 함께 찰스1세 폐위 후 크롬웰의 공화정 실시, 의회민주주의 영국의 자부심)에 관한 것이다.

그녀(잉글랜드)의 평년의 작황 기록을 알고 있었다면(have learned) 당신이 순전히 금전적인(pecuniary) 성격의 소유자(character)가 아닌한 그일(혁명참가)에 다시 낄 필요도 느끼지 못했을 것이다(작황이 평년과 다를바 없었지만 선동에 의해 민란이 발생함).
If one may judge who rarely looks into the newspapers, nothing new does ever happen in foreign parts, a French revolution not excepted.
신문을 거의 찾아보지 않고 결정하는 사람이라면 외국에서 무슨 일이 일어나건 새로울게 없다(결정에 변화는 없다). 다만 프랑스 혁명은 빼자(프랑스 혁명은 세계사적 사건)
