"What's your name, boy?" the justice said.
얘야, 너 이름이 뭐지?"
"Colonel Sartoris Snopes," the boy whispered.
"콜로넬 사토리스 스높스 요." 소년이 속삭이듯 말했다.
"Hey?" the Justice said. "Talk louder. Colonel Sartoris? I reckon anybody named for Colonel Sartoris in this country can't help but tell the truth, can they?" The boy said nothing.
"얘, 크게 말하렴. 콜로넬 사토리스라고? 내 생각엔(reckon: think, regard) 이 나라에서 콜로넬 사토리스라는 이름을 가진 사람은 진실을 말하지 않고는 못배길 것(can't help~) 같은데 그렇지?"

'Enemy! Enemy!' he thought; for a moment he could not even see, could not see that the justice's face was kindly nor discern that his voice was troubled when he spoke to the man named Harris: "Do you want me to question this boy?"
'적이다! 적이다!' 소년은 생각했다. 잠시 그(소년)은 볼수 조차 없었다. 판사의 얼굴이 친절한 표정을 했는지 판사가 해리스라는 이름의 남자에게 질문을 하면서 불편한(troubled) 목소리 였는지 구분(discern)할 수도 없었다. "이 애를 꼭 신문을 해야겠소?"
[겁먹은 소년의 귀에는 들리지 않았다. 판사가 해리스씨에게 꼭 증언대에 세우겠냐며 선처를 베풀라는 동정심을 표하지만 겁먹은 소년의 귀에는 들리지도 보이지도 않고 그저 적개심을 다짐하고 있을 뿐이다.]
But he could hear, and during those subsequent long seconds / while there was absolutely no sound in the crowded little room save that of quiet and intent breathing / it was as if he had swung outward at the end of a grape vine, over a ravine, / and at the top of the swing had been caught in a prolonged instant of mesmerized gravity, weightless in time.
[it was as if ~ 를 주절로 보자. 한 문장에 간이 법정인 가게 안의 숨죽인 분위기와 소년의 참담한 심정을 표현한다. 판사의 동정심 어린 말은 소년의 귀에 들리지도 않았다. 판사의 말이 떨어지자 방안에 모인 청중들은 숨죽이고 해리스씨의 답을 들으려고 기다린다. 그런동안 소년의 심정은 포도 넝쿨(넝쿨에 파뭍혀 있었더라면 편했겠으나)에서 비어져 나온 포도순 마냥 이리저리 흔들리다 흔들림의 정점에서 일순간 서버린 듯 했다. 중력조차 져버려서 넝쿨 속으로 감춰지지 못하는 소년의 처지는 마치 대중 앞에서 발가 벗겨진 참담한 순간 이리라.]
"No!" Harris said violently, explosively. "Damnation! Send him out of here!"
"아니오!" 해리스 씨가 격렬히 폭발하듯 말했다. "제길! 그 애를 여기서 내보냅시다!"
Now time, the fluid world, rushed beneath him again, the voices coming to him again through the smell of cheese and sealed meat, the fear and despair and the old grief of blood:
이제, 유연한 세계가 그의 아래로 다시 몰려왔고 치즈와 통조림 고기 냄새, 슬픔과 좌절 그리고 혈족의 오랜 슬픔을 타고 목소리가 들렸다.

"This case is closed. I can't find against you, Snopes, but I can give you advice. Leave this country and don't come back to it."
"이 껀은 기각(be closed) 되었소. 스높스씨 당신의 혐의점[against you: 피고의 주장(=you)에 반하는]을 찾을 수 없소. 하지만 조언을 주겠소. 이마을을 떠나서 돌아오지 마시오."
His father spoke for the first time, his voice cold and harsh, level, without emphasis: "I aim to. I don't figure to stay in a country among people who…" he said something unprintable and vile, addressed to no one.
소년의 아버지가 처음으로 말했다. 그의 목소리는 차갑고 거칠고 강세(emphasis) 없이 냉정(level)했다. "그럴 작정입니다(aim to). 이런 사람들이 모인(among) 시골에서 머무를 이유를 못찾겠소(not figure out)......" 누구라고 딱히 향하지(addressed to) 않은채 알아들을 수 없고(unprintable) 상스런(vile) 뭔가 말했다.
"That'll do," the Justice said. "Take your wagon and get out of this country before dark. Case dismissed."
"그리 하시오." 판사(the Justice)가 말했다. "당신 마차를 끌고 어두워지기 전에 이 마을을 떠나시오. 이껀은 기각합니다(dismissed)."
His father turned, and he followed the stiff black coat, the wiry figure walking a little stiffly from where a Confederate provost's man's musket ball had taken him in the heel on a stolen horse thirty years ago,
그의 아버지가 돌아서자 소년은 뻣뻣한(stiff) 검은 외투를 입은 그 사람을 따라갔다. 30년전 남부군 감독관의 소총탄이 훔친말(stolen horse)을 탄 그의 발꿈치에 박힌(take in) 이래 자연스럽지 못하게(stiffly) 걷는 강인한 남자다.
[소년의 아버지는 남북전쟁시 군에 입대하지 않고 전쟁통에 남의 말을 타고 도주 중이었던 것으로 보인다. 그는 이 와중에 총에 맞고 다리를 절게되었다. 다리를 절며 걷는 모습을 limp(절름발이 장애)보다 stiff으로 신체적 뻣뻣함과 정신적 꼿꼿함을 함께 표현했다.]

(지금) 소년은 성난 얼굴을 한 두줄 사이를 두명의 등(back)을 따라갔다. 그의 형이 군중속에서 나와 합류 했기 때문이다. 연신 담배를 씹고 있는 그의 형은 아버지보다 크진 않았고 더 말랐다.
and out of the store and across the worn gallery and down the sagging steps and among the dogs and half-grown boys in the mild May dust, where as he passed a voice hissed:
그리고 가게에서 나와 낡은 회랑을 지나고 축쳐진 계단을 내려와서 오월 중순의 먼지속에 개와 철부지(half-grown) 소년들이 모여있는 사이를 지날 때 어느 야유하는(hiss) 소리가 들렸다.
"Barn burner!"
"헛간 방화범 이다!"
