Barn Burning (7) by William Faulkner
Watching him, the boy remarked the absolutely undeviating course which his father held and saw the stiff foot come squarely down in a pile of fresh droppings where a horse had stood in the drive and which his father could have avoided by a simple change of stride.
그를 보면서 소년은 그의 아버지가 유지(hold)하는 경로를 절대로 바꾸지 않고(undeviating) 있다는 걸 알아차렸다(remarked). 그리고 진입로(the drive)에 말이 서 있던 곳에 방금 떨어뜨린 것(fresh droppings=말의 생똥) 무더기(pile of~)에 곧바로 내딛는(come down) 뻣뻣한 다리를 봤다. 그의 아버지는 발길을 조금 바꾸면 (똥밟는) 경로(which=course)를 피할 수도 있었으리라.
[the stiff foot: 전쟁중 쫒겨다니다 총에 맞아 다리를 전다. 신체 뿐만 아니라 정신도 상처 받아 뻣뻣하고 삐딱하다. 사고는 모두 이 뻣뻣하고 삐딱함에서 시작된다.]
But it ebbed only for a moment, though he could not have thought this into words either, walking on in the spell of the house,
소년은 집의 마법 속으로 걸어들어 가면서 하는 이짓(this=아버지가 일부러 말똥을 밟는 행동) 역시(either) 말로 생각해 내지[=이해하지] 못했지만(though~) 그것(it=the peace and joy)이 잠깐 물러갔을(ebbed) 뿐 이었다.
[소년이 말로 옮기지 못하는(=아직 어려서 이해하기 힘든) 상황은 두가지다. 처음본 대저택이 주는 안정감과 오기에 가득찬 아버지의 행동]
[아버지의 오기어린 행동을 보자 '평화와 기쁨'이 잠시 쓸려 갔다. 앞절에서도 아버지의 등을 보자 '평화와 기쁨'이 잠시 쓸려 갔었다.]
which he could even want but without envy, without sorrow, certainly never with that ravening and jealous rage which unknown to him walked in the iron-like black coat before him.
[소년은 아버지의 오기어린 행동이 질투의 발로는 아닐지 의심을 갖고 있다. 아버지가 무슨 생각을 가졌을지 모르나 소년은 대저택을 안정감을 주는 마법으로 보고 원한다.]
'Maybe he will feel it too. Maybe it will even change him now from what maybe he couldn't help but be.'
'아마 아버지(he)도 같은 느낌일거야. 아버지도 어쩔수 없는 그것(=the spell)이 그를 바꿔 놓을지도 몰라.'

They crossed the portico. Now he could hear his father's stiff foot as it came down on the boards with clock-like finality,
그들(소년과 아버지)은 현관을 지났다. 이제 소년은 그의 아버지의 꾿꾿한 발소리를 들었다. 그것은 마치 시계처럼(clock-like) 단호하게(finality) 마룻장을 내딧는(come down on) 듯 했다.
[오기에 차서 일부러 세게 또박또박 내딛고 있는것 같다.]
a sound out of all proportion to the displacement of the body it bore
몸이 향하는(bore)[쪽으로] 보폭(displacement)에 딱 맞춰서(all proportion) 나오는 그런 소리였다.
and which was not dwarfed either by the white door before it,
그리고 아버지의 꾿꾿한 발은(which=stiff foot)는 발 앞의(before it=foot) 하얀문에도 주눅들지(dwarfed) 않았다.
as though it had attained to a sort of vicious and ravening minimum not to be dwarfed by anything
마치 그 발(it=father's stiff foot)은 그 무엇에서도 주눅들지 않겠다는 사악함과 탐욕의 최소한을 획득(attain)한듯 했다.
- the flat, wide, black hat, the formal coat of broadcloth which had once been black but which had now the friction-glazed greenish cast of the bodies of old house flies, the lifted sleeve which was too large, the lifted hand like a curled claw.
평평하면서 넓고 검은 모자, 처음에는 검은 색 이었겠으나 지금은 슬은 광택(friction-glazed)이 쉬파리 몸처럼 녹색빛이 도는(cast) 비로드 천의 평범한 외투, 너무 접어 올려서 동물의 앞발(claw)처럼 굽은 손이 드러나 보였다.
[아버지는 대저택을 사악함과 탐욕의 결정체로 보고 있다. 최소한 그 중 일부인 하얀문 정도에 맞설 만큼은 되는듯이 허세를 부리고 있다. 그런 아버지의 검은 차림은 흰색과 대비된다.]
The door opened so promptly that the boy knew the Negro must have been watching them all the time,
문이 벌컥(so promptly) 열리는 걸로봐서 소년은 흑인이 내내 그들을 내다보고 있었음이 틀림 없다고 생각했다(knew).
an old man with neat grizzled hair, in a linen jacket, who stood barring the door with his body, saying, "Wipe yo foots, white man, fo you come in here. Major ain't home nohow."
린넨 자켓을 입은 단정한 백발(grizzled) 머리의 노인이 그의 몸으로 문을 막아서며(barring) 말했다. "들어오려면 발을 닦아요, 백인양반. 대령님은 집에 안계십니다."

"Get out of my way, nigger," his father said, without heat too, flinging the door back and the Negro also and entering, his hat still on his head.
"저리 비켜라, 검둥아" 소년의 아버지가 역시 별 감정없이(without heat) 여전히 모자는 쓴채로[남의 집 방문시 경의를 표하지 않고] 문과 흑인을 동시에(also)을 밀어 젖히며(flinging back), 말했다.
And now the boy saw the prints of the stiff foot on the doorjamb and saw them appear on the pale rug behind the machinelike deliberation of the foot
그리고 이제야 소년은 문설주(door jamb= 문지방)에 꾿꾿한 발(자욱)이 찍힌 걸 봤다[소년의 눈에 들어왔다]. 허연(pale) 깔판 위의 그 발자욱들(them=prints)은 발 뒤로 기계로 찍은 듯(machine-like deliberation)이 보였다.
[당당한 아버지의 발이 깔판을 딛고 서 있었고 그 뒤로 기계로 찍은 듯한 발자욱이 남겨져 있다.]
* deliberation: 심사, 숙고, 궁리, 침착함...> 선명함
which seemed to bear (or transmit) twice the weight which the body compassed.
아버지의 꿋꿋한 발(which=father's stiff foot)은 몸이 감싼(compass) 두배의 무게를 낳는(bear)(혹은 내놓은[transmit])것 같았다.
[아버지의 몸무게보다 두배 더 무겁게 발휘된 것처럼 보였다. 말똥을 뭍힐 심산으로 꾹꾹 내디뎠다.]
The Negro was shouting "Miss Lula! Miss Lula!" somewhere behind them,
흑인이 그들 뒤 어딘가에서 소리쳤다. "룰라 마님! 룰라 마님!"
then the boy, deluged as though by a warm wave by a suave turn of carpeted stair and a pendant glitter of chandeliers and a mute gleam of gold frames, heard the swift feet and saw her too,
카페트가 깔린 계단의 매끈한 곡선(suave turn), 샹들리에에 메달린 장식(pendant)의 반짝임 그리고 금박입힌 액자(gold frames)의 은은한 반짝임(mute gleam)에 벅차 있던(=deluge: 범람하다. 넘치다) 소년은 빠른 발걸음 소리를 들었고 숙녀의 모습도 봤다[숙녀가 빠른 발걸음으로 나타남].
a lady - perhaps he had never seen her like before either - in a gray, smooth gown with lace at the throat and an apron tied at the waist and the sleeves turned back,
전에 비슷하게라도 본적도 없는 모습의 숙녀는 목과 허리에 레이스가 달린 회색의 부드러운 가운을 입었고 허리에 앞치마를 두르고 소매를 걷어 올린 모습이었다.
wiping cake or biscuit dough from her hands with a towel as she came up the hall,
수건으로 손에 묻은 케익 인지 비스킷 인지 반죽(dough)을 닥으며 홀(hall)에서 나오는 참이었다.
looking not at his father at all but at the tracks on the blond rug with an expression of incredulous amazement.
(숙녀는) 소년의 아버지는 거들떠 보지도 않았고 대신 믿을 수 없다는 놀라운 표정(expression)으로 금빛(blond) 깔개 위의 자욱을 바라봤다.
