On Sunday morning while church bells rang in the villages alongshore, the world and its mistress returned to Gatsby’s house and twinkled hilariously on his lawn.

일요일 아침 해변을 끼고(들어선) 마을의 교회 종소리가 울릴 때 세상(the world=의 온갖 것들-어중이 떠중이-)과 그들의 여자들(mistress:정부)이 게츠비의 집으로 돌아와(return) 그의 (마당) 잔디밭에 법석대며(hilariously) 반짝였다.

[토요일 밤의 흥청망청 파티가 있던 다음날, 일요일 아침의 게츠비 마당의 풍경을 풍자적으로 묘사함. 세상의 온갖 사람들이 다 몰려 들어 법석이고 있다.]

"He's a bootlegger," said the young ladies, moving somewhere between his cocktails and his flowers. "One time he killed a man who had found out that he was nephew to Von Hindenburg and second cousin to the devil. Reach me a rose, honey, and pour me a last drop into that there crystal glass."

"그사람 밀주업자(bootlegger) 래요" 그의(=게츠비의) 칵테일과 그의(=게츠비의) 꽃 사이를 오가면서 한 젊은 숙녀가 말했다.  "한번은 그가 사람을 죽였는데 폰 힌덴버그의 조카로 밝혀졌죠. 악당의 6촌(second cousin)쯤 된데요. 장미 주세요, 당신, 거기 수정 잔에 마지막 한방울까지 부어 줘요."

['he', 'his' 는 모두 게츠비. 뭔가 불량한, 어중이떠중이들이 게츠비의 마당에 모여 게츠비의 술을 '마지막한 방울까지 비워내면서' 시중에 떠도는 게츠비 험담에 한마디 거드는 중.]

Once I wrote down on the empty spaces of a time-table the names of those who came to Gatsby’s house that summer. It is an old time-table now, disintegrating at its folds, and headed "This schedule in effect July 5th, 1922."

한번은 내가 여름에 게츠비의 집에 방문했던 사람들의 이름을 (기차)시간표 빈칸에 적어 놓았었다. 지나간 시간표 였는데, 접은(fold) 자리가 헤져(dis-integrating)고 머릿글에 "이 일정표는 1922년 7월 5일 부터 유효하다(in effect)" 라고 써 있었다.

['effective date': '유효일(유통기한 표시 등)' 또는 '개시일(계약의 이행 시작일)'의 의미. 사용되는 상황에 따라 차이가 있다.  (the date when an agreement starts to operate, or when something is recorded as being bought or sold)]

But I can still read the gray names, and they will give you a better impression than my generalities of those who accepted Gatsby’s hospitality and paid him the subtle tribute of knowing nothing whatever about him.

하지만 [거기써있는] 바랜(gray) 이름들은 아직 선명하다(=can read: 읽을 수 있다). [이 글을 쓰는 시점에 대한 암시] 그리고 게츠비의 접대(hospitality)를 받아들이고 그에 관해 아무것도 모르는 미묘한 찬사(=헛소문에 기반한 게츠비에 대한 평판)를 늘어놓던 사람들에 대한 나의 평가(generalities) 보다 더 괜찮은 인상을 줄 것이다.

[이 글을 쓰는 시점은 닉이 아무도 오지 않은 게츠비의 장례식을 치루고 회상하는 중이다. 기차 시간표에 아무렇게나 써 있다가 바래져간 인물들의 이름들과 내심 험담(미묘한 찬사=소문에 의하면 게츠비의 정체는 '밀주업자(악당)'와 '독일 장군의 조카(유럽 귀족혈통)'사이의 어디쯤에 있다.)을 하면서도 게츠비의 파티에 와서 즐기던 사람들을 보며 닉이 받았던 인상을 비교한다. 그들에게서 그때 받았던 인상(닉의 평가=MY generalities))보다는 지금 기차 시간표에 아무렇게나 써있다가 바래져 버릴 이름들(일반적인 평가=give YOU better impression)이 오히려 선명하다. 이름값 만 못하는 형편없는 인물들이다.]

From East Egg, then, came the Chester Beckers and the Leeches, and a man named Bunsen, whom I knew at Yale, and Doctor Webster Civet, who was drowned last summer up in Maine.

동쪽계란에서 온 사람들, 체스터 베커 부부, 리치(leech:거머리) 부부, 예일에서 부터 알고 있는 분센 이라는 이름의 남자, 작년 여름 메인에서 익사했다는 의사 웨스터 씨벳(civet:사향고양이).

And the Hornbeams and the Willie Voltaires, and a whole clan named Blackbuck, who always gathered in a corner and flipped up their noses like goats at whosoever came near.

혼빔(hornbeam: 서어나무) 부부, 윌리 볼테르부부, 항상 구석에 모여있다가 누가 가까이 올라치면 염소처럼 코를 뒤집는(벌름거리는) 블랙벅(blackbuck: 인도산 영양) 이라는 이름을 가진 일족들(clan).

And the Ismays and the Chrysties (or rather Hubert Auerbach and Mr. Chrystie’s wife), and Edgar Beaver, whose hair, they say, turned cotton-white one winter afternoon for no good reason at all.

Clarence Endive was from East Egg, as I remember. He came only once, in white knickerbockers, and had a fight with a bum named Etty in the garden.

Snell was there three days before he went to the penitentiary, so drunk out on the gravel drive that Mrs. Ulysses Swett’s automobile ran over his right hand.

The Dancies came, too, and S. B. Whitebait, who was well over sixty, and Maurice A. Flink, and the Hammerheads, and Beluga the tobacco importer, and Beluga’s girls.

Schwartze (the son) and Arthur McCarty, all connected with the movies in one way or another.

Da Fontano the promoter came there, and Ed Legros and James B. (“Rot-Gut.”) Ferret and the De Jongs and Ernest Lilly--they came to gamble, and when Ferret wandered into the garden it meant he was cleaned out and Associated Traction would have to fluctuate profitably next day.

A man named Klipspringer was there so often and so long that he became known as “the boarder.”--I doubt if he had any other home.

Benny McClenahan arrived always with four girls. They were never quite the same ones in physical person, but they were so identical one with another that it inevitably seemed they had been there before.

I have forgotten their names--Jaqueline, I think, or else Consuela, or Gloria or Judy or June, and their last names were either the melodious names of flowers and months or the sterner ones of the great American capitalists whose cousins, if pressed, they would confess themselves to be.

All these people came to Gatsby’s house in the summer.

"How’d it happen?"

"웬일이요?"

He shrugged his shoulders.

그는 어개를 으쓱(shrug)했다.

"I know nothing whatever about mechanics," he said decisively.

"나는 기계에 대해선 마무것도 몰라요." 그가 단호하게(decisively) 말했다.

"But how did it happen? Did you run into the wall?"

"근데 왜 이런일이 생겼죠? 벽에 들이 받은(run into)건가요?"

"Don't ask me," said Owl Eyes, washing his hands of the whole matter. "I know very little about driving--next to nothing. It happened, and that's all I know."

"나한테 뭐라하지 말아요." 올빼미 눈이 전말(whole matter)에 사건에 발뺌하며(=washing his hands) 말했다. "나는 운전에 대해선 하나도 몰라요. 비슷하게도 몰라(next to nothing). 그냥 벌어진 일이야. 그게 다요."

"Well, if you’re a poor driver you oughtn't to try driving at night."

"But I wasn't even trying," he explained indignantly, "I wasn't even trying."

An awed hush fell upon the bystanders.

"You're lucky it was just a wheel! A bad driver and not even TRYing!"

The shock that followed this declaration found voice in a sustained "Ah-h-h!" as the door of the coupe swung slowly open.

The crowd--it was now a crowd--stepped back involuntarily, and when the door had opened wide there was a ghostly pause.

군중들이--이제 정말 군중들이 됐다[실랑이가 이어지자 구경꾼들이 몰려듬]--저도모르게 한발짝 물러섰다. 차량문이 활짝 열리고 유령같은 정지(pause)가 있었다. [정적이 흘럿다]

Then, very gradually, part by part, a pale, dangling individual stepped out of the wreck, pawing tentatively at the ground with a large uncertain dancing shoe.

그리고 천천히, 한발짝 한발짝, 창백한, 비틀비틀(dangling) 한 사람(individual)이 폐허(사고차량)에서 걸어나왔다. 커다란 미심쩍은(uncertain) 춤 신발로 땅바닥을 더듬거리며 [pawing tentatively: 동물이 앞발로 땅바닥을 탐지하듯(tentatively) 더듬거리는(paw) 모습=미심쩍은 신발(uncertain shoe)]

Blinded by the glare of the headlights and confused by the incessant groaning of the horns, the apparition stood swaying for a moment before he perceived the man in the duster.

헤드라이트에 눈이부시고(blinded by) 끝없이 으르렁거리는(groaning) 경적소리에 당황한 유령(the apparition)같은 사내가 먼지막이를 입은 남자를 찾기 전까지 갈피를 못잡고(sway:흔들리다, 갈팡질팡) 잠시 서있었다.

"Wha's matter?" he inquired calmly. "Did we run outa gas?"

Half a dozen fingers pointed at the amputated wheel--he stared at it for a moment, and then looked upward as though he suspected that it had dropped from the sky.

대여섯 사람이 손가락으로 절단된(amputated) 바퀴를 가리켰다. 그가 잠시 그것을 쳐다보고는 위를 올려다봤다. 하늘에서 [뭐라도] 떨어지기라도 한듯이.....

"It came off," some one explained.

"빠졌쟎소" 누가 설명했다.

He nodded.

그가 끄덕였다.

"At first I din' notice we'd stopped."

"나는 우리가 섯는지도 몰랐네."

A pause. Then, taking a long breath and straightening his shoulders, he remarked in a determined voice:

정적. 그리고는 긴 숨을 몰아쉬고는 어깨를 펴더니 단호한 소리로 말했다.

"Wonder'ff tell me where there's a gas'line station?"

"주유소가 어디 있는지 알려줄 사람 없소?" [발음이 새고 있다. 술취했나보다.]

At least a dozen men, some of them little better off than he was, explained to him that wheel and car were no longer joined by any physical bond.

마침내 열댓명이, 게중에는 그(=사고 차량 운전자)보다 나을게 없었지만[밤샘 파티가 끝나고 돌아가는 사람들은 너나 없이 취했다.], 그에게 차량과 바퀴는 어떤 물리적 연결(physical bond)도 없다고 설명 했다.

"Back out," he suggested after a moment. "Put her in reverse."

He hesitated.

"No harm in trying," he said.

The caterwauling horns had reached a crescendo and I turned away and cut across the lawn toward home. I glanced back once.

꽥꽥거리는(caterwauling) 경적소리가 점점 빨라졌다(crescendo). 나는 뒤돌아 집으로 잔디밭을 가로 질렀다(cut across). 한번 뒤돌아봤다.

 A wafer of a moon was shining over Gatsby’s house, making the night fine as before, and surviving the laughter and the sound of his still glowing garden.

원반 같은 달(a wafer of a moon)이 게츠비의 집 위에서 빛났다(shining). [달은] 이전처럼 좋은 밤을 연출했고(making night fine) 여전한(still glowing) 그의 마당의 웃음과 소음들에서 살아 남았다(surviving). 

[교통사고의 시끄러운 현장을 뒤로하고 집으로 가던 중에 뒤를 올려다보니 달빛은 여전히 아름다웠고 웃음소리가 아직 들리는 게츠비의 정원 위를 밝히고 있었다. 달빛은 인간들의 떠들썩한 소음에도 불구하고 꿋꿋하다(survive).]

A sudden emptiness seemed to flow now from the windows and the great doors, endowing with complete isolation the figure of the host, who stood on the porch, his hand up in a formal gesture of farewell.

갑작스런 공허(emptiness)가 현관에 서서 손을 들어 정중한 인사를 보내고 선 주인의 모습(the figure of the host)에 완전한 고립을 부여하며 창틀과 거대한 문에 흐르는 듯 했다.

[한바탕 소동이 지나가고 게츠비의 궁전에 정적이 흐른다. 그 정적이 주인을 세상으로부터 고립시키는 것 같다(endowing with complete isolation). 떠들썩 한 파티가 끝난 후 정적이 주는 쓸쓸함이 게츠비의 인상(figure of host)에 묻어난다. 심지어 그는 현관에 나와 홀로 '안녕' 이라며 손을 흔들고 있다(gesture of farewell).]

Reading over what I have written so far, I see I have given the impression that the events of three nights several weeks apart were all that absorbed me.

지금까지 써놓은 것을 읽어보니 지난 몇주 간격을 두고 일어난 사흘 밤의 사건으로 내가 몰입하게된 느낌이 뭐였는지 알만했다. [이 소설은 닉이 회상하는 글이다.]

* 사건1. 톰 부케넌과 데이지 부부와 저녁식사. 톰과 데이지의 부부관계가 원할치 않다. 이스트-에그의 전통 부자의 집 방문(유럽풍 우아함을 본따 만든집). 조던 베이커를 만남

* 사건2. 톰의 정부 머틀과 그녀의 남편 윌슨이 운영하는 정비소. 뉴욕 가는길의 '재의 계곡', 에클버그 박사의 버려진 광고간판에 그려진 커다란 눈. 톰의 아파트에서 그의 정부와 파티

* 사건3. 게츠비의 놀이공원 같은 규모의 파티(웨스트-에그의 신흥부자의 집. 유럽의 유적을 통째로 들여와 장식함. 눈속임이 아닌 진짜 책으로 장식된 서재. 흥청망청 파티). 그의 서재에서 만난 올빼미 눈의 남자(신흥 부자를 알아보는 자). 파티에서 게츠비와 만남. 게츠비는 베이커양에게 긴히 부탁할 것이 있었다. 배경을 알수 없는 벼락부자 게츠비는 누군가?

On the contrary, they were merely casual events in a crowded summer, and, until much later, they absorbed me infinitely less than my personal affairs.

하지만 그것들(they=사흘밤의 사건들)은 전적으로 붐비는(crowded=다사다난한) 여름에 일상적인 (있을법한) 사건들이었다. 한참 후에는 내 개인적 일상보다 나를 훨씬 적게(infinitely less) 몰입시켰다.

[인상적인 사건들을 기록해 놔서 그렇지 크게 개의치 않았다. 그 일들이 지나고 난 후 나는 나의 일상에 더 몰두했다.]

Most of the time I worked. In the early morning the sun threw my shadow westward as I hurried down the white chasms of lower New York to the Probity Trust.

I took dinner usually at the Yale Club - for some reason it was the gloomiest event of my day - and then I went up-stairs to the library and studied investments and securities for a conscientious hour.

저녁은 대개 '예일 클럽'[닉은 예일대 출신이다]에 가서 먹었는데 몇가지 면에서 내 생활중 '가장' 우울했다(gloomiest). 저녁먹고 도서관에 올라가서 족히 한시간(a conscientious hour)가량 투자와 증권에 관해 공부했다.

There were generally a few rioters around, but they never came into the library, so it was a good place to work. After that, if the night was mellow, I strolled down Madison Avenue past the old Murray Hill Hotel, and over 33rd Street to the Pennsylvania Station.

Again at eight o’clock, when the dark lanes of the Forties were five deep with throbbing taxi-cabs, bound for the theatre district, I felt a sinking in my heart.

다시 여덟시가 되면 40번가의 음울한 차선(dark lane)이 극장거리 행의 요동치는(throbbing) 택시들로 다섯겹(five deep)이 될 때 내 마음은 침울해진다(sinking).

For a while I lost sight of Jordan Baker, and then in midsummer I found her again. At first I was flattered to go places with her, because she was a golf champion, and every one knew her name. Then it was something more. I wasn’t actually in love, but I felt a sort of tender curiosity.

It started because she passed so close to some workmen that our fender flicked a button on one man’s coat.

I had expected that Mr. Gatsby would be florid and corpulent person in his middle years.

When he was gone I turned immediately to Jordan--constrained to assure her of my surprise. I had expected that Mr. Gatsby would be a florid and corpulent person in his middle years.

그가 떠났을 때 나는 즉시 조던을 향해 내가 놀랐다는 것(my surprise)을 확인 시켜주려고 압박(constrain)했다.

Something in her tone reminded me of the other girl's "I think he killed a man," and had the effect of stimulating my curiosity.

I would have accepted without question the information that Gatsby sprang from the swamps of Louisiana or from the lower East Side of New York. That was comprehensible.

The nature of Mr. Tostoff's composition eluded me, because just as it began my eyes fell on Gatsby, standing alone on the marble steps and looking from one group to another with approving eyes.

His tanned skin was drawn attractively tight on his face and his short hair looked as though it were trimmed every day. I could see nothing sinister about him. I wondered if the fact that he was not drinking helped to set him off from his guests, for it seemed to me that he grew more correct as the fraternal hilarity increased.

The large room was full of people. One of the girls in yellow was playing the piano, and beside her stood a tall, red-haired young lady from a famous chorus, engaged in song.

Whenever there was a pause in the song she filled it with gasping, broken sobs, and then took up the lyric again in a quavering soprano.

The tears coursed down her cheeks - not freely, however, for when they came into contact with her heavily beaded eyelashes they assumed an inky color, and pursued the rest of their way in slow black rivulets.

As I waited for my hat in the hall the door of the library opened and Jordan Baker and Gatsby came out together. He was saying some last word to her, but the eagerness in his manner tightened abruptly into formality as several people approached him to say good-bye.

The sharp jut of a wall accounted for the detachment of the wheel, which was now getting considerable attention from half a dozen curious chauffeurs.

The fact was infinitely astonishing to him, and I recognized first the unusual quality of wonder, and then the man--it was the late patron of Gatsby’s library.

뚱뚱한 중년의 남자가 커다란 올빼미 안경(spectacles)을 쓰고 약간 취한채 불분명한 눈(unsteady concentration=술에 취해 풀린 눈)으로 선반에 놓인 책을 응시하며 커다란 책상 끝에 앉아 있었다.

* 사실주의 서재: 게츠비의 고색창연한 서재에 수많은 책들이 꼽혀 있다. 커다란 안경을 쓴(올빼미 눈을한, 올빼미는 지혜의 상징) 남자가 서재에 꼽힌 책들이 그냥 장식용 가짜책이 아니라고 한다. 하지만 읽기위한 책도 아니다. 진짜 책을 가져다 놓은 '극사실주의' 과시용 서재다. 벨라스코(Belasco)는 사실주의 무대장식을 꾸민 연출가다. 책들은 읽은 척 하려고 제본 낫장을 트는 짓까지는 하지 않았다. 비록 과시용으로 진짜 책을 가져다 서재를 꾸미긴 했으나 읽은척 하는데 까지 가지는 않았다. 올빼미 눈은 허세를 부리지만 뭔가 절제를 아는 서재 주인에게 다소 경의를 표한다.

He snatched the book from me and replaced it hastily on its shelf, muttering that if one brick was removed the whole library was liable to collapse.

그는 내손에서 책을 나꿔채서(snatch) 서둘러 선반에 다시 꼽았다. 벽돌하나를 빼내면 전체 도서관이 붕괴할 거라고(be liable to~) 웅얼거리면서.

"Who brought you?" he demanded. "Or did you just come? I was brought. Most people were brought."

A pair of stage twins, who turned out to be the girls in yellow, did a baby act in costume, and champagne was served in glasses bigger than finger-bowls.
