[Day 67] Economy

<67-1>

The only co-operation which is commonly possible is exceedingly partial and superficial; and what little true co-operation there is, is as if it were not, being a harmony inaudible to men.

일반적으로 가능한(해보이는) 유일한 협력은(이란) 지극히(exceedingly) 부분적이고 피상적(superficial, 겉으로만 보이는)이다("협력"에 대해 다소 부정적 시각을 드러낸다). 거의 없는 진실된 협력이라고 하는 것은 마치 들리지 않는 소리의 하모니 같이 존재하지 않는다.

If a man has faith, he will co-operate with equal faith everywhere; if he has not faith, he will continue to live like the rest of the world, whatever company he is joined to.

만일 인간이 믿음을 가지고 있다면 그는 어디에서든 동등한 신념으로 협력을 할 것이며,  만일 신념이 없다면  그가 속해진 어떤 조직이든 상관하지 않고 세상의 다른 (like the rest of , 상관 없다는 듯이) 사람들 처럼 생활 할 것이다.

To co-operate in the highest as well as the lowest sense, means to get our living together.

가장 낮은 의미(sense)와 마찬가지로 가장 높은(고귀한) 의미에서 협력한다는 것은 함께 살아간다는 의미이다.

* "협력"에 그 어떤 의미를 부여한다 해도 근본은 함께 살아간다는 것이다.

* 19세기의 "협력"은 20세기의 "똘레랑스" 같은 외래어로 받아들여지는 듯

I heard it proposed lately that two young men should travel together over the world, the one without money, earning his means as he went, before the mast and behind the plow, the other carrying a bill of exchange in his pocket.

최근에 두 젊은이가 함께 세계 여행을 떠날 제안을 했다는 이야기를 들었다. 한 사람은 그의 여비(means)을 앞으로는 돗대를 잡고 뒤로는 쟁기를 지고 벌어가며(earning as he went), 다른 한 사람은 주머니에 환전표(여행자 수표)를 가지고 간다. 

It was easy to see that they could not long be companions or co-operate, since one would not operate at all.

(둘 중) 하나는 일(operate)하지 않을 것이기 때문에 그들은 협력이나 동행을 오래가지 못할 것이라고 예상하기는 쉽다(easy to see, 뻔하다).

* 하나(operate) 와 둘(co-operate)

They would part at the first interesting crisis in their adventures.

그들은 모험의 처음 닥친 위기(crisis)에 헤어지게 될 것이다(확신의 would 조동사).

Above all, as I have implied, the man who goes alone can start today; but he who travels with another must wait till that other is ready, and it may be a long time before they get off.

무엇보다도 (이미) 암시 했듯이, 혼자인 한 사람은 오늘(당장) 출발한 수 있지만, 다른 사람과 여행하는 사람은 다른 한 사람이 준비될 때까지 기다려야 한다. 그리고 출발하기(get off) 전까지 시간이 오래 걸릴 것이다.

But all this is very selfish, I have heard some of my townsmen say.

하지만 이것(앞으로 말할 것)은 전부 이기적이라고 동네 사람들이 말하는 것을 들었다.

I confess that I have hitherto indulged very little in philanthropic enterprises.

나는 지금까지(hitherto) 자선사업(philanthropic enterprises)에 거의 관심이 없다(very little)는 것을 고백한다.

* indulge: 빠져들다.

I have made some sacrifices to a sense of duty, and among others have sacrificed this pleasure also.

나는 의무감에 약간의 희생(sacrifice)을 해왔다. 그리고 무엇보다도(among others) 그 즐거움 또한 희생 했다.

* 의무감에 억지로 희생(봉사)를 한 탓에, 그 희생이라는 뿌듯함도 느끼지 못했다.

There are those who have used all their arts to persuade me to undertake the support of some poor family in the town;

마을의 가난한 가족는 일을 시작하자며(undertake, 착수하다) 온갖 방법(all their arts)으로 나를 설득해온 사람들이 있다.

and if I had nothing to do—for the devil finds employment for the idle—I might try my hand at some such pastime as that.

한가하면 악마가 찾아온다는 속담처럼 내가 할일이 없다면 아마도 시간 때우기 삼아 그일(빈민구제사업)을 손댇을 지도 모른다.

* the devil finds employment for the idle; 악마는 한가할 때 찾아온다.

However, when I have thought to indulge myself in this respect, and lay their Heaven under an obligation by maintaining certain poor persons in all respects as comfortably as I maintain myself, and have even ventured so far as to make them the offer, they have one and all unhesitatingly preferred to remain poor.

하지만, 이런 면으로(in this respect)나 자신을 빠져드리라고 생각 하고, 내가 스스로 나를 유지했던(숲에서 자급자족하며 독립생활을 한) 만큼의 안락함으로 모든 면에서(in all respect) 가난한 사람을 건사하자고 그들의 천국을 깔아 놓으려 했을 때, 그들은 모두다(one and all, 이구동성으로) 망설임도 없이 가난하게 남기로 했다.

* 사람들이 졸라 대길래 빈민구제 한가지 생각만 하고는 내 나름대로 만족했던 자급자족하는 식의 독립을 그들이 생각하는 모두가 행복한 천국에 깔아보려고 했더니, 그들은 그렇게 검소하게 사느니 차라리 가난한 것이 낳겠다고 한다. 가난하면 숲속의 독립 생활보다 훨씬 편하게 원조도 받는다.

While my townsmen and women are devoted in so many ways to the good of their fellows, I trust that one at least may be spared to other and less humane pursuits.

마을의 남녀(여자 처음 등장, 모든 사람들)가 그들을 따르는 사람들의 선의에 대한 많은 방법으로 헌신되는 동안, 적어도 한 사람은 다른 사람에 대해 놀려도 되고 덜 인간애에 덜 적극적이지 않아도 된다고 믿는다.

* 저렇게 온마을 사람이 나서서 가난한 사람을 돕자고 나서는데 한사람 정도는 빠져도 되고 덜 인간적이어도 된다고 생각했다.
* 수동형 문장이 사용되고 있다. 자발적인 헌신이 아니라 어떤 교리에 의해 헌신이 강요되고 있다는 인상을 받는다.

You must have a genius for charity as well as for anything else.

뭐든 그렇지만(as well as) 자선의 재능을 가져야 한다.

* 자선도 타고나야 한다. 남을 궁휼히 여기는 것도 천성이다.

As for Doing-good, that is one of the professions which are full.

선한 일을 하는 것이라면, 그것은 이미 만원인 직업 중의 하나다.

* 착한 일 할 사람은 차고도 넘친다.

Moreover, I have tried it fairly, and, strange as it may seem, am satisfied that it does not agree with my constitution. 

게다가 나는 할만큼 해봤고, 이상하게 보일지 모르지만, 내 기준(constitution)에 맞지 않아 만족되지 않는다.

* 자선사업도 해볼만큼 해봤는데 내 체질에 맞지 않더라. (스스로 잃어서려는 노력하지 않고 도움 받기만 하는 사람들 꼴보기 싫다.)
