뿌리를 치는 한사람 인데 악의 가지에 도끼질 하는(hack, 엉망으로 만들다) 천명이 있다. 많은 양의 시간과 돈을 필요로하는 사람(the needy)에게 하사한 사람은 완화해 보려고(to relieve that misery) 애썼지만 소용 없어진(in vain) 불행(misery)을 그의 삶의 방식으로(그 나름대로) 최선을 다하는 중이었을 것이다(It may be~).
* 자선가는 결국 소용 없었지만 그의 방식대로 많은 돈과 시간을 들여 불행을 덜어 주려고 했다.

열번째 노예를 (팔아얻은) 수익(proceeds)을 나머지(아홉명)의 일요일의 자유를 사기위해 헌납(devoting)하는 경건한(pious, 신실한) 노예사육농장주(slave-breeder) 다.
* 노예 열명당 한명을 팔아서 일요일에 나머지 노예들을 쉬게 하려고 한다. 노예사육이라는 반인륜적 악행을 하면서도 뭔가 선행을 베푸는 착한 노예농장주라니 이보다 큰 모순이 또 있을까.
Some show their kindness to the poor by employing them in their kitchens. Would they not be kinder if they employed themselves there?
어떤 사람은 가난한 사람을 그들의 부억(떼기)으로 고용함으로서 친절함을 보여준다. 만일 그들 자신을 그곳(부엌)에 고용하면 더 친절하지 않을까?
* 자신이 착하다는 것을 보여주려고 가난한 사람을 부엌떼기(하찮고 힘든일)로 고용하는데, 험한 일은 자기 스스로 하면 더 친절한 것이 아닌가?
You boast of spending a tenth part of your income in charity; may be you should spend the nine tenths so, and done with it.
당신은 수입의 십분의일(a tenth)을 자선에 쓴다고 뽐낸다. 아마 당신은 십분의 구를 써서 그것(자선)을 끝낼 수도 있는데도 말이다.
Society recovers only a tenth part of the property then. Is this owing to the generosity of him in whose possession it is found, or to the remissness of the officers of justice?
결국(then) 사회는 자산의 십분의일 만을 복구(보상)한다. 그(자선가)의 소유물(possession)의 내에서 찾을 수 있는 관대함 덕분인가 아니면 법률 관리의 나태함(remissness) 때문인가?
* it is found in his possession; 자선의 양은 그의 재산 한도 내에 있다. 세금 관리가 좀더 적극적으로 대처하여, 숨은 자산을 찾던가 세금의 양을 늘리던가 해서 사회에 대한 자선을 늘릴 수 있다.

Philanthropy is almost the only virtue which is sufficiently appreciated by mankind. Nay, it is greatly overrated; and it is our selfishness which overrates it.
박애주의(Philanthropy)는 인간에 의해 충분히 평가된 가장 그리고 유일한 덕목이다. 아니다. 그것은 과대평가됐다. 그것은 과대평가하고 싶은 우리의 이기심(selfishness)이다.

The kind uncles and aunts of the race are more esteemed than its true spiritual fathers and mothers.
인류의 친절한 숙모나 삼촌(한다리 건너 소소한 도움을 슬쩍 건네는 이웃)은 진실된 정신적 부모(흙수저를 물려줬지만 정신적 참견을 하는 친부모)에 비해 다소 과대 평가 되었다.
