The woods were already filled with shadows one June evening, just before eight o'clock, though a bright sunset still glimmered faintly among the trunks of the trees.

여덟시가 채 안된 시각, 석양이 나무 등걸 사이에서 희미하게 반짝이고 있지만 숲은 이미 여느(one) 유월 저녁 그늘로 채워졌다.

A little girl was driving home her cow, a plodding, dilatory, provoking creature in her behavior, but a valued companion for all that.

작은 소녀가 암소(a cow)를 몰고 집으로 가는 중이었다. 소의 몸짓에(in her behavior) 터벅터벅걷고(plodding), 꾸물거리고(dilatory), 지분거림(provoking)이 있다. (소녀의 말을 안듣고 귀찮았다.) 하지만 아주 소중한 동행이다.

They were going away from whatever light there was, and striking deep into the woods, but their feet were familiar with the path, and it was no matter whether their eyes could see it or not.

그들(소녀와 소)은 멀리서 아른대는 불빛과 멀어져 숲속 깊이 들어가지만 익숙한 발길이었고 그들이 그길을 볼 수 있거나 없거나 개의치 않았다.
* 소녀의 집은 마을과 멀리 떨어져 외진 곳인데다 이미 어두워 길이 보이지 않지만 숲길은 익숙하다.

There was hardly a night the summer through when the old cow could be found waiting at the pasture bars; / on the contrary, it was her greatest pleasure to hide herself away among the high huckleberry bushes, / and though she wore a loud bell she had made the discovery that if one stood perfectly still it would not ring.

여름동안(the summer through) 그 늙은 (암)소가 방목지 목책(pasture bars)에서 기다리는 것이 발견되는 밤은 거의 없었다(hardly).
* 여름동안 암소가 목책에 숨어 발견될때 까지 얌전히 밤새 기다려 주는 경우는 거의 없었다. (늙은 암소는 영리하게도 늘 어딘가 숨어 있다.)

오히려(on the contrary), 키큰 월귤나무 덤블(huckleberry bushes)사이에 몸을 감추는 것은 그녀(암소)의 아주 커다란 즐거움이었다.
* 암소는 덤블 사이에 숨는 것을 즐기는가 보다.

그리고 그녀(암소)가 커다란 종을 차고(wore < wear) 있어도 꼼짝않고(perfectly still) 서있으면 울리지 않는 다는 것을 알고있다(발견 했다).
* 암소를 의인화 하고 있다.

So Sylvia had to hunt for her until she found her, and call Co'! Co'! with never an answering Moo, until her childish patience was quite spent.

실비아(소녀 목동의 이름)는 암소가 소녀를 발견하기 전에 그 암소를 찾아내야 했다(had to hunt). 그리고, (실비아가) 소야! 소야! 라고 불렀지만 소녀의 아이다운(childish) 인내심이 다 소진될때 까지 소는 음메! 하고 대답하지 않았다. (소녀가 지치면 모습을 드러냈다.)
* So Sylvia had to hunt for her(암소) until she(암소) found her(실비아),
* 암소가 소녀를 먼저 발견하면 도망갈지 모르니 소녀가 암소를 먼저 발견해야 했다.

If the creature had not given good milk and plenty of it, the case would have seemed very different to her owners.

만일 그 짐승(암소)가 좋은(영양가 있는) 우유를 충분히 제공하지 않았더라면 이 (소가 도망다니며 애태우는)일(the case)은 암소의 주인에게 아주 달랐을지도 모른다.
* 사실과 반대의 의미를 가지는 가정법 과거 형식 문장: 그 암소가 아주 유용한 우유를 제공했기에 망정이지 그렇지 않았다면 속썩이는 늙은 암소는 그냥 두지 않았을 것이다.

Besides, Sylvia had all the time there was, and very little use to make of it.

게다가 실비아가 거기에(소와 노는일에) 온 힘을 다했고 (소의 엉뚱한 버릇을) 고치려는 노력(to make of it)은 하지 않았다(very little).

Sometimes in pleasant weather it was a consolation to look upon the cow's pranks as an intelligent attempt to play hide and seek, and as the child had no playmates she lent herself to this amusement with a good deal of zest.

때로 날씨가 좋은 날에는 암소의 장난(prank)을 쳐다보면 숨바꼭질 하는 것 같아서(as an intelligent attempt: 소가 지능이 있으랴만은...) 위안(consolation)이 되었다. (실비아는 외로운 소녀다) 아이 친구가 없었기에 그녀(암소?)는 자신을 이 놀이(amusement)에 상당량 보탰다.

Though this chase had been so long that the wary animal herself had given an unusual signal of her whereabouts, Sylvia had only laughed when she came upon Mistress Moolly at the swamp-side, and urged her affectionately homeward with a twig of birch leaves.

이런 숨바꼭질 놀이중 찾기(chase: 추적)가 너무오래 걸리기라도 치면 지친 동물은 자기스스로(암소 스스로) 어디에 있는지(whereabouts) 알리는비범한 신호를 보냈지만, 실비아는 늪가에서  '물리'양을 마주치면(came upon) 웃기만 했다. 그리고는 자작나무 잎이달린 가지(twig)를 가지고 집으로 가는길을 다정하게(affectionately) 재촉했다(urge).
* Moo-lly: 소울음 소리에 빗댄 암소 이름

The old cow was not inclined to wander farther, she even turned in the right direction for once as they left the pasture, and stepped along the road at a good pace.

그 늙은 암소는 멀리 떠도는 편이 아니었다. 심지어 목초지를 떠나올때  이따금 한번씩 (알아서) 제길로 방향을잡기도 했다. 길을따라 편안한(느긋하게 보조(pace)를 맞췄다.

She was quite ready to be milked now, and seldom stopped to browse.

그 암소는 우유를 짜줘야 할 때가 됐고(ready to be milked) (풀뜯기위해)훑기(browse)를 거의 멈추는 법이 없었다.
* 집으로 돌아갈 때쯤이 되면 젖이 불어 있기 때문에 도중에 풀뜯는다고 멈추거나 하지 않고 서둘러 왔다.

Sylvia wondered what her grandmother would say because they were so late.

실비아는 할머니가 늦었다고 한마디 하시지 않을까 걱정했다.

It was a great while since she had left home at half-past five o'clock, but everybody knew the difficulty of making this errand a short one.

집을 떠날때가 다섯시 반이었으니 상당한 시간(great while)이 흘렀다. 하지만 이 (소먹이는) 심부름(errand)이 짧은 시간에 끝내기 어렵다는 것은 누구나 안다.

Mrs. Tilley had chased the hornéd torment too many summer evenings herself to blame any one else for lingering, and was only thankful as she waited that she had Sylvia, nowadays, to give such valuable assistance.

* torment: 골치꺼리, 고통
* lingering: 꾸물거리는, 질질끄는
틸리 부인은 '뿔달린 골치꺼리(hornéd torment=암소)'를 매일 여름 저녁마다 쫓아야 했기에 늦었다고(lingering) 누구를 혼낼 처지가 아니다. 근자에(nowadays, 실비아가 이곳에 온지 일년 가량 됐다) 아주 소중한 도움을 주는 실비아를 기다리는 것이 (혼내기는 커녕) 고마울 따름이었다.

The good woman suspected that Sylvia loitered occasionally on her own account; there never was such a child for straying about out-of-doors since the world was made!

* loiter: 꾸물거리다, 배회하다

그 착한 여인(할머니)은 실비아가 가끔 자기 뜻대로(in her own account) 배회하는 것이 아닐지 생각했다(suspect). 유사이래 문밖을 떠도는 그런 아이는 없었다.

Everybody said that it was a good change for a little maid who had tried to grow for eight years in a crowded manufacturing town, but, as for Sylvia herself, it seemed as if she never had been alive at all before she came to live at the farm.

다들 시끄러운 생산 마을(공장 지대)에서 8살을 먹도록 견뎌낸(tried to grow) 작은 아이에게 (전원은) 좋은 변화라고 말했다. 정작 실비아 자신으로 치면 농장에 살러 오기 전에는 삶이라고 할 수도 없었던 듯 보였다.
* 농장으로 오기전 공장지대의 생활환경은 실비아 본인도 싫어했다.

She thought often with wistful compassion of a wretched geranium that belonged to a town neighbor.

* wistful: 탐나는 듯한, 생각에 잠긴

그녀(할머니)는 자주 애잔한 마음(wistful compassion)에 공장마을에 이웃한 시든(wretched) 제라늄 같다고 생각했다.

"Afraid of folks," old Mrs. Tilley said to herself, with a smile, after she had made the unlikely choice of Sylvia from her daughter's houseful of children, and was returning to the farm.

* Afraid of~: ~을 무서워하다.
"사람들을 무서워 했지", 틸리 부인은 미소를 머금고 혼자말 했다. 그녀(틸리 할머니)의 딸의 집안 가득한(다수의) 아이들 중 실비아를 마지못해(unlikely, 어쩌다보니) 선택한 후에 집으로 데려왔다.
* 틸리 할머니는 곤궁한 딸의 아이들중 한 아이, 실비아를 데려다 키웠다.

"'Afraid of folks,' they said! I guess she won't be troubled no great with 'em up to the old place!"

"사람들을 무서워 한다고 하더군! 내 생각엔 걔(실비아)가 시골(old place)에 오면 사람들과(with them) 더이상(no great) 어려워지지 않을거라고(would be troubled) 생각 했어"

When they reached the door of the lonely house and stopped to unlock it, and the cat came to purr loudly, and rub against them, a deserted pussy, indeed, but fat with young robins,

* purr: 가르랑 거리기, 목구멍 울리기

* pussy: 야옹이
그들(할머니와 실비아)이 외딴집(lonely house)의 집앞에 도착해서 문을 따려고 섰을때 고양이가 다가와 큰소리로 가르랑 거렸고(purr) 그들을 문댓다(rub). 그것은 실은 길 고양이(deserted pussy) 였지만 새끼 울새(robin)를 잡아먹고(fat with robins) 살쪘다.
* 길고양이지만 마르지 않았다. 길고양이도 거두는 할머니의 품성을 보여줌.

Sylvia whispered that this was a beautiful place to live in, and she never should wish to go home.

실비아는 여기가 살기에 아름다운 장소이고 절대 집에가고 싶어 하지 않을(never should with) 거라고 속삭였다.

The companions followed the shady wood-road, the cow taking slow steps and the child very fast ones.

일행(실비아와 소)은 그늘진 숲길을 따라 걸었다. 암소는 느릿한 걸음 그리고 아이는 종종거리는 걸음으로...

The cow stopped long at the brook to drink, as if the pasture were not half a swamp, and Sylvia stood still and waited, letting her bare feet cool themselves in the shoal water, while the great twilight moths struck softly against her.

* shoal: 모래톱, 다수, 얕은
한참만에 소가 시내(brook)에 (물을) 마시려고 섯다. 초원이 반쯤 늪지(swamp)가 아니었으니까(초원 전체가 늪지가 아니므로 물없는 길을 걷다가 물을 만나면 쉬었다간다.). 실비아는 가만히(still) 서서 기다렸다. 맨발을 얕은 물위에 (담가) 알아서 식도록 했다. 그새 거대한 황혼나방(twilight moths) 그녀와 부디쳤다.

She waded on through the brook as the cow moved away, and listened to the thrushes with a heart that beat fast with pleasure.

* wade: 걸어서 가다(건너다). 애쓰며 걷다.
소가 움직여 멀어지자 소녀는 시내를 거슬러 걸었다. 그리고 즐거움에 빠르게 뛰는(두근거리는) 심장으로 짓빠귀새(thrushes)의 지저귐을 들었다.
* 짓빠귀새의 지저귐을 들으며 즐거움에 심장이 두근거렸다.

There was a stirring in the great boughs overhead. They were full of little birds and beasts that seemed to be wide awake, and going about their world, or else saying good-night to each other in sleepy twitters.

머리위로 커다란 가지가 흔들 거렸다. 가지에 작은 새들과 활짝 깨어(wide awake) 자기들 영역(their world)으로 가는 듯이 보이는 짐승들로 가득 했다. 혹은 (짐승이 아닌 새들은) 졸린 지저귐으로 서로 밤인사라도 건네는 중 일지도 모른다(or else).
* 야행성 동물은 깨고 새들은 자러간다.

Sylvia herself felt sleepy as she walked along. However, it was not much farther to the house, and the air was soft and sweet.

She was not often in the woods so late as this, and it made her feel as if she were a part of the gray shadows and the moving leaves.

이렇게 늦게까지 숲에 있기는 흔치 않았고 마치 회색 그늘과 흔들리는 잎의 일부라도 된느낌이었다.

She was just thinking how long it seemed since she first came to the farm a year ago,

소녀는 일년전에 처음 이 농장에 왔을때 이래로 얼마나 오래전 일인가 생각했다.

and (she was) wondering if everything went on in the noisy town just the same as when she was there,

그리고 만일 이 모든 것이 그녀가 살던 시끄러운 도시와 같았더라면 어땠을까 생각했다(wondering).

the thought of the great red-faced boy who used to chase and frighten her made her hurry along the path to escape from the shadow of the trees.

쫓아와서 놀래키던 커다란 빨간얼굴의(짖굳은) 소년의 기억이 그녀를 서둘러 나무 그늘로부터 바삐 도망치게 만들었다. (옛날 생각이 떠올라 바삐 움직였다.)

Suddenly this little woods-girl is horror-stricken to hear a clear whistle not very far away.

(옛날 생각에 약간 겁먹은 순간에) 갑자기 멀지 않은 곳에서 선명한 호각 소리에 이 작은 숲속 소녀는 겁에 질렸다(horror-stricken).

Not a bird's-whistle, which would have a sort of friendliness, but a boy's whistle, determined, and somewhat aggressive.

새의 지저귐(bird's-whistle)이었다면 부드러웠을 터였다. 새의 지저귐이 아니었다(not). 그렇다고 (기억 속의 짓굳은)소년의 호각소리도 아니다(but). (그것은) 인위적(determined)이고 다소 공격적이었다.

Sylvia left the cow to whatever sad fate might await her, and stepped discreetly aside into the bushes, but she was just too late.

* discreetly: 조심스레, 신중히
실비아는 무슨 슬픈 파국(fate)이 닥치던 암소를 내버려 두고(left) 덤불로 조심스레 발길을 돌렸다(step aside). 하지만 너무 늦었다.

The enemy had discovered her, and called out in a very cheerful and persuasive tone, "Halloa, little girl, how far is it to the road?" and trembling Sylvia answered almost inaudibly, "A good ways."

적은 그녀를 이미 발견 했고(had discovered) 아주 활기있고 설득력있는 음색으로 불렀다. "안녕, 꼬마아가씨. 도로까지 얼마나 멀지?" 떨면서 실비아는 거의 들리지 않게 "한참...." (good=very)

She did not dare to look boldly at the tall young man, who carried a gun over his shoulder, but she came out of her bush and again followed the cow, while he walked alongside.

그녀는 어깨에 총을 메고 있는 키큰 젊은 남자를 감히 쳐다보지 못했지만 숨어있던 덤불(her bush; 그녀의 덤불)에서 나와 소를 따라갔고 젊은 남자가 나란히 걸었다.

"I have been hunting for some birds," the stranger said kindly, "and I have lost my way, and need a friend very much. Don't be afraid," he added gallantly.

* gallantly: 정중하게, 우아하게, 씩씩하게
"나는 새를 사냥하던 중이었단다." 그 이방인이 친절하게 말했다. "그리고 길을 잃었지. 친구(도움줄 사람)를 절실히 필요했단다. 겁내지 말거라." 그는 아주 정중하게 말했다.

"Speak up and tell me what your name is, and whether you think I can spend the night at your house, and go out gunning early in the morning."

"목소리 높여 말해줄래? 이음이 뭐니? 어떻게 생각할지 모르겠는데 너네 집에서 오늘밤 묵어갈 수 있을까? 아침일찍 사냥(gunning) 나가야 하거든."

Sylvia was more alarmed than before. Would not her grandmother consider her much to blame? But who could have foreseen such an accident as this? It did not seem to be her fault, and she hung her head as if the stem of it were broken, but managed to answer "Sylvy," with much effort when her companion again asked her name.

실비아는 경계를 늦추지 않았다. 할머니가 (늦은데다 낮선 사람을 데려 왔으니) 더 혼내키진 않을까? 하지만 이런 사건을 누군들 예상이나 했나? 실비아 잘못은 아니었다. 소녀는 마치 줄기가 부러진듯이 고개를 들었다(고개를 홱 쳐들었다). 하지만 간신히 대답했다. 그 이방인이 재차 소녀의 이름을 물었을 때 더 힘주어(with much effort) 대답했다. "실비"

Mrs. Tilley was standing in the doorway when the trio came into view. The cow gave a loud moo by way of explanation.

셋(실비아, 암소 그리고 사냥꾼)이 나타났을 때(came into view) 틸리 부인이 문간에 서있었다. 암소가 설명하려는 듯이 크게 음메 소리를 냈다.

"Yes, you'd better speak up for yourself, you old trial! Where'd she tucked herself away this time, Sylvy?"

* old trial = horned torment = the cow
그래, 크게 말하는게 좋을거야, 요 늙은 것아(old trial)! 이번에는 이것이 어디 멀리가서 숨었더냐(tucked herself), 실비야?"

But Sylvia kept an awed silence; she knew by instinct that her grandmother did not comprehend the gravity of the situation.

하지만 실비아는 두려움에(awed, 걱정에) 말이 없었다. 할머니가 상황의 중요성(gravity)을 즉각 알아채지 못했다는 것을 알기 때문이다.
*손님을 데리고 늦게 돌아온 상황을 설명하기도 애매하니 할마니가 생각하도록 잠시 말미를 주었다.

She must be mistaking the stranger for one of the farmer-lads of the region.

할머니는 그 낮선이가 그 지역의 젊은 농부(lad: 젊은이)중 하나라고 잘못 생각하고 있는 것 같았다.

The young man stood his gun beside the door, and dropped a lumpy game-bag beside it; then he bade Mrs. Tilley good-evening, and repeated his wayfarer's story, and asked if he could have a night's lodging.

* bade: <bid: 명령하다. (격식있게) 말하다.
그 젊은이는 총을 문옆에 놓고 헐렁한 가방을 그옆에 내려놓았다. 그리고는 틸리 부인에게 정중히 저녁인사를 했다(bade good-evening). 그리고 그가 길을 일은 사정을 되풀이 하며 혹시 하룻밤 묵을 수 있는지 물었다.

"Put me anywhere you like," he said. "I must be off early in the morning, before day; but I am very hungry, indeed. You can give me some milk at any rate, that's plain."

* "원하시는 어디든 저를 두세요.", 상대방 입장에서 처분을 바라는 형식은 굉장히 정중하다.
"자리는 상관 없어요" 그가 말했다. "내일 아침 일찍 식전에(before day) 떠나야 해요.  그런데 실은 배가 몹시 고픕니다. 댓가가 얼마든(at any rate) 우유를 좀 주시겠어요. 그게 답니다(that's plain)"

"Dear sakes, yes," responded the hostess, whose long slumbering hospitality seemed to be easily awakened.

"아, 그래요." 집주인이 대답했다.  오랜동안 잠자던(slumbering) 친절함이 쉽게 깨어나는 듯 했다(이방인의 출현에 경계를 품고 있다가 사정을 다 듣고는 정중한 말투의 젊은이에게 친절을 베풀기로 함).

"You might fare better if you went out to the main road a mile or so, but you're welcome to what we've got. I'll milk right off, and you make yourself at home. You can sleep on husks or feathers," she proffered graciously.

"큰길로 일 마일 정도 더 가면 더 좋은 곳이 나올텐데, 하지만 우리가 가진곳에 온걸 환영해요(어쨌든 우리집에 온걸 환영/누추한 곳에 어서 오시구랴/우리가 사는게 이래요.). 금방 우유 가져올께요. 편히 쉬시구려. 깍지 더미(husks)나 털 더미(feathers)에서 자요." 할머니가 아주 인자하게 말했다.

"I raised them all myself. There's good pasturing for geese just below here towards the ma'sh. Now step round and set a plate for the gentleman, Sylvy!" And Sylvia promptly stepped. She was glad to have something to do, and she was hungry herself.

"전부(농작물 깍지, 거위 털) 내가 기른거라우. 저 앞에 습지에 거위들 (자라기)좋은 목초지가 있지요. 자, 움직여. 저 신사에게 접시를 내주렴, 실비." 실비아는 서둘렀다. 웬지 모르게 기뻣다. 그녀도 배가 고팠다.
