It was a surprise to find so clean and comfortable a little dwelling in this New England wilderness.

뉴잉글랜드 오지(wilderness)에서 이렇게(so) 깨끗하고 편안한 아담한(little) 거주지의 발견은 아주 놀라웠다. (이런 집이 있다니 놀라웠다.)

The young man had known the horrors of its most primitive housekeeping, and the dreary squalor of that level of society which does not rebel at the companionship of hens.

* dreary: 음울한
* squalor: 더러움, 누추함
* companionship: 교제, 사귐
그 젊은이는 가장 원시적인 가사(housekeeping)의 공포와 음울(dreary)하게 누추함(squalor)을 알고 있었다(경험한 적이 있다.) 그곳은 닭과 동급이라고 해도 부정하지 못하는 사회수준이었다.
* 닭장이라고 해도 좋을 정도로 음울하고 누추한 생활수준과 공포스런 원시적인 집안살림을 경험한 적이 있었다.
* 영어의 표현법 차이:
- '공포'와 '누추함'을 알고 있다(had known) > 본적있다. (과거완료표현=경험담)
- 원시적인 가사의 '공포' > 공포스런 '집안살림'
- 닭과 견줄 수준의 사회의 음울한 누추함 > 닭장에 견줄 만큼 누추한 '수준'

This was the best thrift of an old-fashioned farmstead, though on such a small scale that it seemed like a hermitage.

마치 암자(hermitage) 같아 보이는 작은 규모지만 옛날 방식 농장의 최고의 검소함(thrift)이다.

He listened eagerly to the old woman's quaint talk, he watched Sylvia's pale face and shining gray eyes with ever growing enthusiasm, and insisted that this was the best supper he had eaten for a month, and afterward the new-made friends sat down in the door-way together while the moon came up.

Soon it would be berry-time, and Sylvia was a great help at picking.

곧 딸기철이 될 터였다. 실비아가 따는데 크게 기여했었다.

The cow was a good milker, though a plaguy thing to keep track of, the hostess gossiped frankly, adding presently that she had buried four children, so Sylvia's mother, and a son (who might be dead) in California were all the children she had left.

비록 쫒아 다니기에 성가시긴(plaguy) 했으나 암소는 좋은 우유 공급원 이었다. 집주인(할머니)는 담담히(frankly)이야기를 이어나갔다. 그녀는 네 아이를 땅에 묻었다고 했다. 실비아의 엄마와 캘리포니아에 있다는 아들(아마 죽었을지도 모를) 댄이 남은 아이들이다.

"Dan, my boy, was a great hand to go gunning," she explained sadly.

"댄, 내아들, 아주 사냥을 잘했지.". 그녀가 슬픈 목소리로 이야기했다.

"I never wanted for pa'tridges or gray squer'ls while he was to home. He's been a great wand'rer, I expect, and he's no hand to write letters. There, I don't blame him, I'd ha' seen the world myself if it had been so I could. Sylvy takes after him," the grandmother continued affectionately, after a minute's pause.

"나는 집에 올때 꿩(partridge)이나 갈색 다람쥐를 잡아오라고 한적이 없어(말 안해도 알아서 잡아옴). 걔는,내 예상에(I expect),대단한 방랑자였지. 편지쓸 겨를이 없을거야(문맹이거나...). 내가 그럴 수만 있다면(if I could) 나 자신도 세상을 보러 다녔겠지. 걔를 탓하지 않아. 실비가 그를 닮았지(take after)." 잠시 아무말이 없다가 다정하게(affectionately) 계속 했다.

"There ain't a foot o' ground she don't know her way over, and the wild creaturs counts her one o' themselves.

"그애가 모르는 길이 없이 그애 발이 안디뎌본 땅이 없지요. 야생동물들이 그애를 믿나봐요.

Squer'ls she'll tame to come an' feed right out o' her hands, and all sorts o' birds.

다람쥐(squirrel)들을 그애 손에서 먹을 것을 주어 다가오게 길들이이지요. 다른 새들도 다 그렇답니다.

Last winter she got the jay-birds to bangeing here, and I believe she'd 'a' scanted herself of her own meals to have plenty to throw out amongst 'em, if I hadn't kep' watch.

* bangeing = have a loaf: 주변에서 어슬렁거리다.
* scant: 아끼다.
지난 겨울에 어치새(jay-bird)가 이근처를 배회 했지요. 그애가 그 새들에게 던져 주려고 자기 음식을 아끼는 것 같았지요(I believe ~). 내가 안봤다면 그렇게 했겠지요.

Anything but crows, I tell her, I'm willin' to help support,—though Dan he had a tamed one o' them that did seem to have reason same as folks.

내가 그애한테 말했어요. 까마귀 만 아니면 나는 다 도와줄 거라고.... 비록 댄, 그애도 그중 하나를 길들였는데, 그 까마귀가 마치 사람(folks) 같아서 봐줬어요.  (까마귀는 싫어 하는데 아들 댄이 길들인 까마귀는 봐줬는데 이유는 사람 같아서)

It was round here a good spell after he went away.

댄이 떠난 후에도 한동안(spell) 이 근처에 있었지요.

Dan an' his father they didn't hitch,—but he never held up his head ag'in after Dan had dared him an' gone off."

댄과 그애 아버지(할머니 남편)가 잘 맞지 않았어요. 하지만 댄이 남편에게 대들고(dare)  떠난 후 머리를 다시 들지 못했어요." [아들이 떠나서 속상한가?]

The guest did not notice this hint of family sorrows in his eager interest in something else.

손님은 가족의 슬픈 가족사보다 뭔가 다른 이야기에 주목했다.

"So Sylvy knows all about birds, does she?" he exclaimed, as he looked round at the little girl who sat, very demure but increasingly sleepy, in the moonlight.

"그러니까, 실비가 새에 대해 아주 잘 안다는 거죠?" 그가 탄성을 질렀다. 달빛 아래에 얌전히(demure) 그렇지만 점점 졸리운채 앉아있는 작은 소녀를 둘러보며 말했다.

"I am making a collection of birds myself. I have been at it ever since I was a boy." (Mrs. Tilley smiled.) "There are two or three very rare ones I have been hunting for these five years. I mean to get them on my own ground if they can be found."

"저는 새를 수집 합니다. 아주 어렸을 때부터죠" "근 오년간 아주 희귀한 두세종 새를 찾고 있어요. 찾을 수 있다면 데려가고 싶네요."

"Do you cage 'em up?" asked Mrs. Tilley doubtfully, in response to this enthusiastic announcement.

"우리에 가둔다는 건가?" 틸리 부인이 그의 열정적인 말에 대하여 의아하게 물었다.

"Oh no, they're stuffed and preserved, dozens and dozens of them," said the ornithologist, "and I have shot or snared every one myself. I caught a glimpse of a white heron a few miles from here on Saturday, and I have followed it in this direction. They have never been found in this district at all. The little white heron, it is,"

"아뇨. 보존재를 채워서(박제하다)" 조류학자(젊은이, 사냥꾼에서 호칭이 변함)가 말했다. "총으로 잡던지(shot), 덧을 놓던지(snare) 전부 제손으로 잡아요. 이근처에서 지난 토요일에 몇마일 떨어진 곳에서 백로를 언뜻 봤지요. 그래서 쫒아서 이쪽으로 온겁니다. 이쪽에서는 전혀 발견하지 못했어요. 그 작은 백로는"

and he turned again to look at Sylvia with the hope of discovering that the rare bird was one of her acquaintances. But Sylvia was watching a hop-toad in the narrow footpath.

그리고는 희귀한 새가 그녀가 아는(her acquaintance) 새중 하나일거라는 희망으로 실비아를 다시 쳐다봤다. 하지만 실비아는 오솔길에 펄쩍뛰는 두꺼비를 보고 있었다. (하지만 오솔길의 펄쩍뛰는 두꺼비가 실비아의 주의를 끌었다.)

"You would know the heron if you saw it," the stranger continued eagerly. "A queer tall white bird with soft feathers and long thin legs. And it would have a nest perhaps in the top of a high tree, made of sticks, something like a hawk's nest."

"백로를 금방 알아볼거야" 이방인이 다그쳤다. "부드러운 털이 길고 가늘고 긴 다리를 가진 특이하게 키가큰 새야. 아마 높은 나무 꼭데기에 막대기로 지은 둥지가 있을텐데. 매의 둥지랑 비슷하지."

Sylvia's heart gave a wild beat; she knew that strange white bird, and had once stolen softly near where it stood in some bright green swamp grass, away over at the other side of the woods.

실비아의 심장이 무섭게 뛰었다. 그녀는 그 이상한 새를 알고 있었다. 그리고 한번은 숲의 반대쪽 저넘어에 밝은 녹색 수초(swamp glass)에 (새가) 서있던 근처에서 숨어서 본적이 있었다.

There was an open place where the sunshine always seemed strangely yellow and hot, where tall, nodding rushes grew, and her grandmother had warned her that she might sink in the soft black mud underneath and never be heard of more.

그곳은 햇볕이 기묘하게도 항상 노랗고 뜨겁게 비치는 개활지 였다. 키큰 흔들리는(nodding) 골풀(rushy)들이 자랐다. 할머니가 부드러운 검은 뻘에 빠져 더이상 아무것도 듣지 못하게(헤어나오지 못하게) 될거라고 주의를 줬던 곳이다.
* never be heard: (늪에 빠져) 듣지 못하게 되다=존재를 모르게 되다

Not far beyond were the salt marshes just this side the sea itself, which Sylvia wondered and dreamed much about, but never had seen, whose great voice could sometimes be heard above the noise of the woods on stormy nights.

소금기 있는 습지는 바다가 있는 쪽에서 그리멀리 떨어지지 않았다. 실비아는 (바다에 대해) 궁금해하고 상상했다. 하지만 본적은 없었다. 태풍이 치던 밤 숲의 소리에 묻어오는(above) 바다의 거대한 목소리가 가끔씩 들렸었다.

"I can't think of anything I should like so much as to find that heron's nest," the handsome stranger was saying.

"백로의 둥지를 찾는것 만큼(so much as) 내가 좋아할 어떤것도 생각할 수 없어요." (백로둥지 말고는 어떤것도 관심 없어요), 잘생긴 이방인이 말했다.

"I would give ten dollars to anybody who could show it to me," he added desperately, "and I mean to spend my whole vacation hunting for it if need be. Perhaps it was only migrating, or had been chased out of its own region by some bird of prey."

* prey: 포획, 사냥
* bird of prey: 맹금 (사냥하는 새)

"내게보여주는 누구에게도 10달러를 줄겁니다." 그는 다급하게(desperately) 덧붙였다. "제 말은, 필요하다면 휴가 전부를 그 사냥에 쓸 수도 있답니다. 아마 그것(백로)는 이주중(migrating)이거나 맹금류에게 쫒겨서(be chased) 살던지역에서 벗어나는 중일지도 모르죠."

Mrs. Tilley gave amazed attention to all this, but Sylvia still watched the toad, not divining, as she might have done at some calmer time, that the creature wished to get to its hole under the door-step, and was much hindered by the unusual spectators at that hour of the evening.

틸리 부인은 놀라서 관심을 보였지만(19세기말 10달러는 큰돈이다.) 실비아는 여전히 두꺼비를 쳐다보고 있었다.
실비아는 혼자있을 때(calmer time)는 필시 그런 생각을 했겠지만, 그 피조물(두꺼비)이 문지방(door-step) 아래에 난 구멍까지 이르고(get to) 싶어했고 그날 저녁시간에 평소랑 다른(unusual) 구경꾼들 때문에 더 방해받는 다고는 짐작하지 못했다(no divining),

No amount of thought, that night, could decide how many wished-for treasures the ten dollars, so lightly spoken of, would buy.

쉽게 이야기된 10달러로 살수 있는 갖고 싶었던(wished-for) 보물들이 얼마나 될지 헤아릴 수 없었다.

The next day the young sportsman hovered about the woods, and Sylvia kept him company, having lost her first fear of the friendly lad, who proved to be most kind and sympathetic.

다음날 젊은 스포츠맨은 숲을 헤맷다(hover). 매우 친절하고 공감(sympathetic)을 보여준(proved to) 친근한 젊은이(lad)에 대한 첫 두려움을 떨친 실비아가 그를 동행 했다.
* 그 젊은이(lad)는 매우 친근하고 공감하는 것으로 밝혀졌다(be proved to~).
* 첫 인상의 두려움을 잊게됐다.
* 그 젊은이가 숲을 헤멜 때 동행 했다.

He told her many things about the birds and what they knew and where they lived and what they did with themselves.

그는 실비에게 새에대해, 새들이 무엇을 아는지(새들의 지능), 어디에 사는지(새들의 주거), 모여서 무엇을 하는지(새등의 공동생활) 따위등 많은 이야기를 해주었다.

And he gave her a jack-knife, which she thought as great a treasure as if she were a desert-islander.

그리고는 접이칼을 주었다. 실비는 그 칼이 섬에 고립된다면 소중한 물건이 될거라는 생각을 했다.

All day long he did not once make her troubled or afraid except when he brought down some unsuspecting singing creature from its bough.

가지에서 노래하는 동물(새)를 예기치 않게 (쏘아) 덜어뜨렸을 때를 빼고 하루종일 그는 한번도 힘들게 하거나 무섭게하지 않았다.

Sylvia would have liked him vastly better without his gun; she could not understand why he killed the very birds he seemed to like so much.

실비아는 그가 총이 없다면 훨씬 좋아 했을 터였다. 새를 그렇게 좋아한다면서 왜 그 새를 죽였는지 이해할 수 없었다.

But as the day waned, Sylvia still watched the young man with loving admiration.

날이 기울면서(wane) 실비아는 여전히 젊은 남자를 연정으로 쳐다봤다.

She had never seen anybody so charming and delightful; the woman's heart, asleep in the child, was vaguely thrilled by a dream of love.

실비아는 그렇게 빛나고 정겨운 사람을 만나본적이 없었다. 아이 속에 잠자던 여자의 마음이 사랑의 감정으로 요동쳤다.

Some premonition of that great power stirred and swayed these young creatures who traversed the solemn woodlands with soft-footed silent care.

They stopped to listen to a bird's song; they pressed forward again eagerly, parting the branches,—speaking to each other rarely and in whispers; the young man going first and Sylvia following, fascinated, a few steps behind, with her gray eyes dark with excitement.

She grieved because the longed-for white heron was elusive, but she did not lead the guest, she only followed, and there was no such thing as speaking first.

그녀는 원하던 백로가 보이지 않아 슬펏다. 하지만 그 손님을 인도하지 않고 따라다니기만 했다. 먼저 말거는 일도 없었다.

The sound of her own unquestioned voice would have terrified her,—it was hard enough to answer yes or no when there was need of that.

무심코 나온 그녀 자신의 목소리에 스스로 놀랐다. 꼭 필요할 때만 네, 아니오로 겨우 대답했다(hard enough to answer).

At last evening began to fall, and they drove the cow home together, and Sylvia smiled with pleasure when they came to the place where she heard the whistle and was afraid only the night before.

마침내 저녁이 내리고 그들은 소를 몰고 함께 집으로 향했다. 실비아는 지난밤 처음 호각소리게 놀랐던 장소에 이르자 즐거운 미소를 지었다.
