그녀 존재의 가장 강력한 동기로서 우연히 인지한 자존감을 얻은 마당에 풀리지 않는 수수께끼인 사랑이 뭐 그리 중요하겠나! (이타적 사랑대신 주체적 자존감을 택함, 실체를 알수 없는 사랑 따위는 개나 줘버려!)

조세핀(여동생)은 잠긴 문앞에서 무릎을 꿇고는 입술을 열쇄구멍에 대고 애원하듯(imploring), "루이스 뭐하는겨. 그러다 병난다.제발 문열어봐"

"저리가 나는 병을 자초하지 않아". 오히려 그녀는 열린 창을 통해 생명의 영약(elixir)을 마시는 중이였다.

36) Her fancy was running riot along those days ahead of her. Spring days, and summer days, and all sorts of days that would be her own.

그녀의 공상은 그녀 앞에 놓인 나날들을 따라 요동치며(riot: 폭동) 달렸다. 봄날, 여름날 그리고 온갖 가지의 나날들은 모두 그녀 몫이 될터였다(would be her own).

37) She breathed a quick prayer that life might be long. It was only yesterday she had thought with a shudder that life might be long.

그녀는 짧은 기도(quick prayer)를 읇었다(breath). (새롭게 찾아온 자존감 넘치는) 인생이 길어야 한다는 (짧은 기도, 비록 남편은 죽었지만!). 어재만 해도 삶이 길어질거라는 생각에 몸서리 쳤었다(shudder). (몹시 지루한 삶이었다)

한참뒤(at length) 일어나서 여동생의 성화(importunity)에 문을 열었다.

39) There was a feverish triumph in her eyes, and she carried herself unwittingly like a goddess of Victory.

그녀 눈은 성취로 활활 타올랐다(feverish triumph). 그녀 자신을 무의식적으로(unwittingly) 마치 승리의 여신인양 여겼다.

40) She clasped her sister’s waist, and together they descended the stairs. Richards stood waiting for them at the bottom.

여동생의 허리를 감싸고 계단을 내려왔다. 아랫층에 리차드씨가 기다리고 있었다.

41) Some one was opening the front door with a latchkey. It was Brently Mallard who entered, a little travel-stained, composedly carrying his grip-sack and umbrella.

누군가 앞문을 열쇄로 따고 있었다. 바로 여행에 바랜 모습을 한 브렌틀리 말라드씨가 가방과 우산을 멘채 들어오는 것이었다.
