대학을 설립하는 방법은 일반적으로(commonly) 후원금(subscription)을 한푼한푼(dollars and cents) 모으고(get up) 나서 극단적으로 노동의 분배 법칙을 맹목적으로 따르게 된다.
* 돈이 모이면 그 다음 부터는 습관적으로 무슨 법칙이라도 있는 듯이 진행된다.
따라서는 않되었을(should never be followed) 하지만 신중 했어야 할(but with circumspection) 이 법칙은 이(학교 짓는 일)를 투기적 과업(subject of speculation)으로 만들 하도급 업자(contractor)를 끌어들이고(call in), 업자는 실제로 기초를 놓을 아일랜드인 혹은 다른 노동자를 고용하는 것이다.
while the students that are to be are said to be fitting themselves for it; and for these oversights successive generations have to pay.
* oversight(실수): 대학을 세우는데 하청업체를 동원한 것. 대학의 토대를 대학 구성원의 손으로 만들어야 한다는 저자의 주장이 이어진다.
I think that it would be better than this, for the students, or those who desire to be
benefited by it, even to lay the foundation themselves.
학생 또는 그(학교의) 덕을 보고자 하는 사람들에게 그들 스스로 기초를 놓는 편이 더 나을 것이라고 생각한다. (수혜자가 직접 나서라!)
The student who secures his coveted leisure and retirement by systematically shirking any labor necessary to man obtains but an ignoble and unprofitable leisure, defrauding himself of the experience which alone can make leisure fruitful.
인간에게 필수인 어떤 노동도 때되면 알아서(systematically) 피해가면서 탐나는 여가와 은퇴를 확보한 학생은 비열(ignoble)하고 헛된(unprofitable) 여가를 유일하게 보람차게 만들 수 있는 경험을 사취하여 얻는다.
* 인간에게 필수인 노동도 회피(shirk)하고도 (사회)제도에 따라 때 되면 여가도 갖고, 은퇴가 보장된(secure) 학생은 게다가(but) 비열하고 헛된 여가(휴가)를 여가를 유익한 것으로 만들수 있는 유일한 방법인 경험을 사취하므로서(defrauding himself of the experience) 얻는다.
* 여가(leisure, 빈둥거림. 쓸모없이 허비함)를 의미있게 만드는 것은 살아온 경험이 있기 때문인데, 이 경험 조차 교실에서 배우는 것은 남의 것을 사취하는 것이나 같다.

젊은이들이 삶의 경험을 즉각적으로 시행해보는 것보다 더 잘 배울수 있을까?
Methinks this would exercise their minds as much as mathematics.
생각건데(Methinks) 이것(체험:교류와 실험을 통해 경험을 쌓는것)은 수학 만큼이나 그들의 마음을 단련하는 것이 될 것이다. (수학은 연습으로 완성된다!)

내가 한 소년이 문리(예술과 과학)에 대하여 알기를 바란다면(내가 한소년에게 예술과 과학을 깨우치게 해주고 싶다면) 나는 순전히 어느 교수의 이웃으로 보내서 그곳에서 예술(art of life)조차 학습받고 연습하는 일반적인 과정을 따르지 않을 것이다.
* 정규 수업과정에서 교실은 예술의 수동적인 교습소다.

식초 한방울에 든 괴물들(미생물)은 심사숙고하면서 주위에 떼지어있는 괴물들에 의해 잡아먹히는 지도 모른다.
