[Day 52] Economy

Before I finished my house, wishing to earn ten or twelve dollars by some honest and agreeable method, in order to meet my unusual expenses, I planted about two acres and a half of light and sandy soil near it chiefly with beans, but also a small part with potatoes, corn, peas, and turnips.

내 집을 다 짖기 전에 혹시모를(unusual) 비용을 대비하기 위해(in order to meet) 정직하고 수용할 만한(무리하지 않고 꼼수부리지 않은) 방법으로 10~12달러 가량 벌 요량으로(wishing) 두 에이커 반의 척박하고(light) 모래 땅에 주로 콩을 그리고 약간의 감자, 옥수수, 완두콩 그리고 순무(turnip)를 심었다(plant).

The whole lot contains eleven acres, mostly growing up to pines and hickories, and was sold the preceding season for eight dollars and eight cents an acre.

전체 부지(lot)는 대부분 소나무와 히코리가 자라고 있는 11 에이커를 포함된 땅인데 지난 해(season) 에이커당 8달러 8센트에 팔렸었다.

One farmer said that it was “good for nothing but to raise cheeping squirrels on.” I put no manure on this land, not being the owner, but merely a squatter, and not expecting to cultivate so much again, and I did not quite hoe it all once.

한 농부가 "찍찍거리는(cheeping) 다람쥐가 자라는 것 말고는 아무 쓸모없는 땅"이라고 했다. 나는 이 땅에 소유자가 아니기고 그저 무단 점유자 기에 다시 경작할 예정도 아니어서 퇴비(manure)를 뿌리지 않았고 전체적으로 호미질(잡초제거)한번 제대로 한적 없었다(일부분은 했다.)

I got out several cords of stumps in ploughing, which supplied me with fuel for a long time, and left small circles of virgin mould, easily distinguishable through the summer by the greater luxuriance of the beans there.

쟁기질 해서(in ploughing) 상당기간 연료 공급원이 되었던 그루터기 몇줄을 파냈다(get out). (파낸 자리는) 처녀 지의 작은 원을 남겼는데 여름 내내 거기서 콩이 매우 풍부(luxuriance)하게 자라 쉽게 표가 났다(distinguishable).

The dead and for the most part unmerchantable wood behind my house, and the driftwood from the pond, have supplied the remainder of my fuel.

집 뒤에 죽고 대부분 상업성이 없는 나무들과 호수에서 떠밀려온 나무(driftwood)는 나의 여분(보조)의 연료 공급이 되었었다.

I was obliged to hire a team and a man for the ploughing, though I held the plough myself.

나의 쟁기를 잡고 있긴 했지만 쟁기질을 위해 일단의 인부(인부와 쟁기)를 고용할 수 밖에 없었다(be obliged to).
* 나도 내 쟁기를 가지고 있었지만 그루터기를 뽑기 위해서는 큰 장비가 필요했다.

My farm outgoes for the first season were, for implements, seed, work, &c., $14 72.

첫 농사철에서 내 농장의 지출은 자재(implements), 씨앗, 품삯 그리고 기타 경비에 14불 72센트 였다.

The seed corn was given me. This never costs any thing to speak of, unless you plant more than enough.

씨 옥수수는 얻었다. 필요 이상으로 심지 않는다면 말하자면 어떤 비용이 들지 않는다.
* 텃밭정도 작은 농사에는 씨앗은 얻을 수도 있어서 비용이 크게 들지 않는다.

I got twelve bushels of beans, and eighteen bushels of potatoes, beside some peas and sweet corn.

12부셸의 콩, 18부셸의 감자 이에 더해 약간의 완두콩과 단 옥수수를 수확했다.

The yellow corn and turnips were too late to come to any thing.

노란 옥수수와 순무는 수확하기에 너무 늦었다(너무 늦게 심어서 아무것도 수확할 수 없었다.)
