[Day 22] Economy

I have thought that Walden Pond would be a good place for business, not solely on account of the railroad and the ice trade; it offers advantages which it may not be good policy to divulge; it is a good port and a good foundation.

월든 호는 사업하기 좋은 곳이라고 생각해왔다. 단지 철도 사업이나 얼음교역*의 측면에서 뿐만 아니라, 지금 드러내기에 좋은 때(정책)인 것 같진 않지만 (원든호 지역의 사업하기 좋은)장점이 있다. 괜찮은 항구와 (사업)기반을 갖추고 있다는 것이다.

No Neva marshes to be filled; though you must every where build on piles of your own driving. It is said that a flood-tide, with a westerly wind, and ice in the Neva, would sweep St. Petersburg from the face of the earth.

(채워야 할)네바강 늪지 같은 곳은 없어서 손수 쌓아야 한다. 네바 강에서 서풍과 함께 밀려오는 썰물-조수와 얼음은 세인트 피터스버그를 지구상에서 지워 버릴 정도라고 한다.

* 월든에서 얼음 사업을 위해 물을 가둬야 한다는 의미인 듯. 네바강에서는 혹독한 자연의 덕을 볼 수 있다고 한다. 얼음과 물이 서풍을 따라 알아서 밀려옴. 월든호 지역은 이런 혜택은 없어도 사업기반이 잘되어 있으니 해볼만 하다.

* Ice Trade - 19세기 말 중남미, 중동 지역으로 교역확대로 인해 음식물 보관이 큰 문제였음. 이에 따라 북유럽에서 음식 보관용 얼음을 가져다 파는 무역이 성행했다고 함. 1차대전 이후 냉장고 보급으로 쇄퇴. (참고: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_trade )

As this business was to be entered into without the usual capital, it may not be easy to conjecture where those means, that will still be indispensable to every such undertaking, were to be obtained.

기본자본 없이 뛰어들 수 있는 사업이라지만, 사업을 벌이면서 꼭 필요한 수단들을 어떻게 충족할지 추측하기는 쉽지 않다.

As for Clothing, to come at once to the practical part of the question, perhaps we are led oftener by the love of novelty, and a regard for the opinions of men, in procuring it, than by a true utility.

일하는 사람에게 옷의 목적이 무엇인지 되집어 보라고 하자. 먼저, 생명유지를 위한 보온을 먼저 들 것이다. 그 다음으로 사회적 상황을 고려하여 치부를 감추기 위해 필요한 정도가 얼마만큼인지 판단할 것이다. 또는 중요한 일을 수행하는데 옷장을 더 채울 필요 없다고 할 것이다.

Kings and queens who wear a suit but once, though made by some tailor or dress-maker to their majesties, cannot know the comfort of wearing a suit that fits. They are no better than wooden horses to hang the clean clothes on.

전속 재단사가 만들어주는 정장을 입는 (별로 할일 없어보이는)왕과 왕비(귀족)는 딱 맞는 옷을 입고 있어도 편안함을 모른다. 그들은 깨끗한 옷을 걸친 목마보다 나을게 없다.
