[Day 36] Economy

Morning work! By the blushes of Aurora and the music of Memnon, what should be man’s morning work in this world?

아침에 할 일! 오로라(Eos, 여명의 여신)와 멤논(오로라의 아들)의 음악을 불러 냈듯이 인간의 아침 일은 무엇이 되어야 하는가?

오로라가 여명에 눈물로 죽은 아들 멤논의 볼에 홍조를 띄게(살려냄) 했듯이 인간이 눈을 뜨고 이 세상에서 가장 먼저 할 일은 무었인가?

* in this world, 인간이 이세상을 맞이하는 때는 아침에 눈을 떳을 때. 눈감고 있는 동안에 세상은 없다.
* 산사람 만이 볼에 홍조(blush)를 띔. By~는 invoking의 의미
* 에오스가 눈물로 죽은 멤논을 깨워냄

I had three pieces of limestone on my desk, but I was terrified to find that they required to be dusted daily, when the furniture of my mind was all undusted still, and I threw them out the window in disgust.

내 책상에 라임스톤(화폐석으로 쓰이던 석회석) 세조각이 있었는데, 내 마음속의 가구에 덮힌 먼지도 여전한데, 매일 아침마다 먼지를 털어줘야(be dusted) 한다는 것을 알고 너무 놀라 넌더리치며(in disgust) 창문 밖으로 던져 버렸다.

How, then, could I have a furnished house? I would rather sit in the open air, for no dust gathers on the grass, unless where man has broken ground.

그런 처지에, 어찌 집안에 가구를 갖추고 있겠나? 차라리 인간이 파헤치치 않은 땅, 먼지가 떨어질 염려 없는 풀밭(순결한 땅)에 나가 읹아 있겠다.

It is the luxurious and dissipated who set the fashions which the herd so diligently follow.

군중들(herd)이 맹목적( so diligently)으로 따르는 유행을 만드는 것은 사치스럽고 방탕한 자(the dissipated)들이다(It is~ who~).

The traveller who stops at the best houses, so called, soon discovers this, for the publicans presume him to be a Sardanapalus, and if he resigned himself to their tender mercies he would soon be completely emasculated.

가장 좋은 집(최고의 여관)에 머무는(stop at) 여행자는주막 주인(publicans, 세리)이 사르다나팔로스왕이라도 된 양(presume to be~) 대접하며, 만일 그(여행자)가 가장된 친절(tender mercies)에 스스로를 맞겨 놨다가는 곧 빈털털이가 될거라는 것을 아는데 그리 오래 걸리지 않을 것이다. (가정법 과거 완료형 문장. ~했더라면:실제로 그리한 것이 아님)

* emasculate, 거세하다. 약화시키다.

I think that in the railroad car we are inclined to spend more on luxury than on safety and convenience, and it threatens without attaining these to become no better than a modern drawing room, with its divans, and ottomans, and sunshades, and a hundred other oriental things, which we are taking west with us, invented for the ladies of the harem and the effeminate natives of the Celestial Empire, which Jonathan should be ashamed to know the names of.

우리가 (요즘의)철도객차 내부(in the railroad car)에 안전과 편의 시설보다 치장에 더 치중하고(are inclined to), 긴의자(divan), 오스만 풍의 소파, 차양막과 그외 우리가 서구로 날라온 하렘의 부인들과 천조국(중국을 지칭함)의 나약한 본성(19세기말 중국 귀족들의 사치와 권력 혼란)을 위해 발명된, 보통의 미국인이라면 그 이름을 안다는 것만으로도 부끄러워할(퇴폐적인 물건과 모습) 백여가지 동양풍 장식을 갖춘 현대적인 응접실(drawing room)보다 훌륭하지 않을까 위협하고 있다(도데체 열차 객차 안에 무슨 짓을 한걸까?).

* Jonathan: 19세기 미국에서 가장 흔한 이름, Jack and Jill

I would rather sit on a pumpkin and have it all to myself, than be crowded on a velvet cushion. I would rather ride on earth in an ox cart with a free circulation, than go to heaven in the fancy car of an excursion train and breathe a malaria all the way.

번잡한 벨벳 쿠션보다 차라리 호박위에 나혼자 차지하고 앉는게 낳겠다. 멋지게 꾸민 행락(excursion)열차를 타고 내내 말라리아 공기를 숨쉬며 천상을 여행하느니  통풍이 잘되는 황소 달구지를 타고 이 땅을 여행 하련다.

* 신화와 역사에 비유한 사치와 향락이 언급되고 있다. 시중 번역서 들의 어려움을 이해되긴 한데 어느 부분은 원문과 차이가 크다. 문장을 보는 관점의 차이도 보인다. 번역서가 베스트 셀러 였다는데 그 독자들은 어디에 있을까?
