봄이왔다. 도끼를 빌려 월든 호수로 나섯다.
Near the end of March, 1845, I borrowed an axe and went down to the woods by Walden Pond, nearest to where I intended to build my house, and began to cut down some tall arrowy white pines, still in their youth, for timber.
1845년 3월 말경, 도끼 한자루 빌려서 내집을 지으려고 점찍어둔(intended to) 곳에서 가장 가까운 월든 호 옆의 숲으로 내려갔다. 그리고 목재로 쓰기위해 아직 울창한(still in their youth,산림법이 아직 적용되지 않은 시절인듯.) 키큰 화살모양 백송 몇그루를 쓰러트리기(cut down) 시작했다
It is difficult to begin without borrowing, but perhaps it is the most generous course thus to permit your fellowmen to have an interest in your enterprise.
빌리는 것 없이 시작하는 것은 어렵다. 당신 사업에 관심을 가지고 있는 이웃을 허락하는 것은 지극히 관대한(당연한) 과정이다.
*도끼를 하나 빌리러 갔는데 그 주인은 뭣에 쓸려는지 관심을 가졌을 터이고 앞으로 계획을 안 알려 줄 수 없었다.
* 뭔가 특이한 것을 해보고 싶을 때 사실 남들의 눈총을 의식 안할 수가 없다. 부끄럼 타는 사람은 자주적이기 어렵다. 이럴때 남들 오지랍에도 관대하게 대하다.
도끼 주인은 들고 있던걸 내게 내주면서 자기에게 아주 소중한 물건이라고 말했다. 나는 빌렸을 때 보다 더 날카롭게 갈아서 돌려줬다.

It was a pleasant hillside where I worked, covered with pine woods, through which I looked out on the pond, and a small open field in the woods where pines and hickories were springing up.
내가 일하던 보기좋은(pleasant) 산자락은 소나무 숲으로 덮여 있었다. 호수를 내다볼 수 있도록 호수 쪽으로 열려있었고 소나무와 히코리나무가 솟아(무성해) 있던(spring up) 숲속에 작은 개활지였다(small open field).
* spring up: 자라다/무성하다
The ice in the pond was not yet dissolved, though there were some open spaces, and it was all dark colored and saturated with water.

(물구멍은 뒷 문장에서 pond hole이라고 지칭 됨. 작가는 뭔가 서술해도 그것을 써먹을 의도를 가짐)
There were some slight flurries of snow during the days that I worked there; but for the most part when I came out on to the railroad, on my way home, its yellow sand heap stretched away gleaming in the hazy atmosphere, and the rails shone in the spring sun, and I heard the lark and pewee and other birds already come to commence another year with us.
일하던 몇일새 약한 눈보라가 내렸다. 하지만 대부분 집에오는 길에 철길로 나오면 노란 모래 무덤이 뿌연 대기(hazy atmosphere, 아지랭이)속에 멀리까지 희미하게 비쳤다(gleaming). 그리고 철로가 봄 햇볓에 빛났고, 종달새와 딱새 그리고 여러 새들이 우리와 함께 새해를 시작한다고 알렸다(come to commence).
They were pleasant spring days, in which the winter of man’s discontent was thawing as well as the earth, and the life that had lain torpid began to stretch itself.
인간을 불편하게 했던 겨울이 대지와 함게 녹아 내리고(thawing, 해빙) 잠들어(torpid, 휴면의) 있던 생명이 기지개를 펴는(stretch out) 유쾌한 봄날 이었다.
One day, when my axe had come off and I had cut a green hickory for a wedge, driving it with a stone, and had placed the whole to soak in a pond hole in order to swell the wood,
어느날, 내 도끼가 빠져서(come off) 생 히코리를 잘라 만든 쐐기를 돌로 쳐 박은 후 나무를 불리기(swell) 위해 호수 구멍(물이 녹은)에 담그고 있을 때,
I saw a striped snake run into the water, and he lay on the bottom, apparently without inconvenience, as long as I staid there, or more than a quarter of an hour; perhaps because he had not yet fairly come out of the torpid state.
(허물을) 벗은 뱀이 물속으로 들어가는 것을 봤다. 그놈은 겉으로 보기엔 별로 불편함 없이 배를 깔고 기어갔다. 내가 있는 내내, 15분은 될터였다. 아마 아직 충분히 휴면(torpid) 상태에서 벗어난것 같지 않았다.
It appeared to me that for a like reason men remain in their present low and primitive condition; but if they should feel the influence of the spring of springs arousing them, they would of necessity rise to a higher and more ethereal life.
그것은 인간이 현재 낮고(초보적) 원시적인 상태 머무르고 있는 것과 같은 것처럼 보였다. 하지만 그들을 깨운 봄들 중의 봄(참다운 봄?)의 영향을 느꼈다면 필연적으로(of necessity)더 높고 더 영원한 삶으로 오를지도 모른다(때를 만나면 뱀도 이무기가되어 승청할 텐데, 인간이 아직 덜 돼서 뱀처럼 이제막 허물을 벗을 거나 마찬가지 상태에 있다).
