[Day 25] Economy

I say, beware of all enterprises that require new clothes, and not rather a new wearer of clothes.
새로 입을 사람을 필요로 하지 않고 새 옷을 필요로 하는 모든 사업에 주의하라고 말한다.

If there is not a new man, how can the new clothes be made to fit?
새로(입을) 사람이 없다면 새로 맞춤 옷을 만들수 없지 않은가 말이다

 If you have any enterprise before you, try it in your old clothes.
만일 당신 앞에 새로운 사업(꺼리)가 있다면 헌옷을 입고(헌옷에 맞춰) 시도해 보라(재 보라).

All men want, not something to do with, but something to do, or rather something to be.
모든 사람은 무으로 할 것(수단)을 원하지 않고 무엇을(목적) 할까 또는 무엇이 될지 더원한다. (수단, 도구가 되기 보다 목적, 목표가 되고 싶어 한다.)

Perhaps we should never procure a new suit, however ragged or dirty the old, until we have so conducted, so enterprised or sailed in some way, that we feel like new men in the old, and that to retain it would be like keeping new wine in old bottles.

마치 구체제에서(in the old) 새사람이 나타난 것 처럼 느낀 다거나, 헌 부대(old bottle)에 새 술(new wine)을 담았어도 괜찮을 만큼 그런 방향으로 잘하고, 운영하고 항해해 나갈 수 있을 때까지, 우리는 비록 옷이 낡고 더렵혀져도[(양보/도치) however ragged or dirty the old > however the old ragged or dirty,], 아마도 새 정장을 공급하려 하지 않았을 것이다.

(요약) 완전히 확신이 서기 전까지는 구습을 타파하고 새로운 체제를 받아 들이려 하지 않는다. 그나마 신 체제도 구습의 테두리에서 만족해야 했다.

Our moulting season, like that of the fowls, must be a crisis in our lives.

우리의 털갈이(개혁)의 계절은 마치 가금류(fowl, 닭)의 그것처럼 인생의 위기에 처하게 될 것이다. (조류가 아닌 '가금류'를 비유한 이유는 털갈이와 함께 잡아먹힐 위기라서?)

The loon retires to solitary ponds to spend it.

아비(loon, 야생오리 류)는 은퇴하면 한적한 호수에 와서 남은 생을 보낸다.

Thus also the snake casts its slough, and the caterpillar its wormy coat, by an internal industry and expansion; for clothes are but our outmost cuticle and mortal coil.

또한 내부의 발달과 성장(확장)하는 탓에 뱀은 껍질을, 자벌래는 애벌래 코트를  벗어 던지지만, 옷은 인간의 가장 외곽을 덮은 표피(cuticle)이자 일상의 굴레(mortal coil)이다.

일상의 문제들에 대한 시적 표현. "죽느냐 사느냐 그것이 문제로다..."에 이어지는 햄릿의 독백에 나옴

* '옷'은 성장에 따라 벗어 던질 수 있는 탈피 동물의 '껍질'이 아니라 닭의 깃털 처럼 피부를 감싸고 있어서 벗어 던질 수 없는 굴레(외형의 옷에 연연하는 인간의 모습을 보라)와 같은것.

Otherwise we shall be found sailing under false colors, and be inevitably cashiered at last by our own opinion, as well as that of mankind.

아니면, 우리의 위선이 발각되어 스스로의 자세(자만)에 의해 사라져 버릴 것이다.

We don garment after garment, as if we grew like exogenous plants by addition without.
우리는 옷이 마치 외피 식물이나 되는 듯이 겹겹이 끼워 입는다(don, 입다의 격식있는 표현).

Our outside and often thin and fanciful clothes are our epidermis or false skin, which partakes not of our life, and may be stripped off here and there without fatal injury;
인간의 외피(outside)와 가끔은 얇고 이쁜 셔츠(내의)는 생명의 일부(partake,함께하다, 참여하다)가 아닌 표피(epidermis)나 가짜 피부와 같아서(and 접속사) 치명적인 부상 없이도 억지로 벗겨낼 수도 있다. (새의 깃털, 뱀이나 벌래의 탈피, 그리고 인간의 내복을 비교해 보라)

our thicker garments, constantly worn, are our cellular integument, or cortex; but our shirts are our liber or true bark, which cannot be removed without girdling and so destroying the man.
지속적으로 닳는 우리의 두꺼운 외투(garment)는 세포 피막(integument)이자 피질(cortex)이지만 내복(shirts)는 깍아내지(girdle, 1.끈, 거들 2.(과일)둥글게 깍다)않으면 제거할 수 없는 인피질(liber,식물의) 또는 나무껍질(bark,식물의)같아서 결국 인간을 (제거하려면)다치게한다. ('표피'는 닳아 없어 질 수 있지만 살껍데기는 생명에 단단히 붙어 있다)

I believe that all races at some seasons wear something equivalent to the shirt.
나는 모든 생물종들은 내복에 해당하는 어떤 것이든 가지고 있다고 확신한다.
