[Day 23] Economy

No man ever stood the lower in my estimation for having a patch in his clothes;
내가 알기로 자기옷에서 기운 것보다 더 (지위가)낮게 서있었던 사람은 없었다. (자기 분수보다 잘 차려입고 싶어 함. 위선적 삶의 예로 외형적인 차려입음에 빗대고 있음)

yet I am sure that there is greater anxiety, commonly, to have fashionable, or at least clean and unpatched clothes, than to have a sound conscience.
확신 컨데, 유행에 뒤지지 않게 입고 싶어 하는, 적어도 깨끗하고 깁지 않은 옷을 입고 있어하는 (사람들은)열망이 있다.

But even if the rent is not mended, perhaps the worst vice betrayed is improvidence.
하지만 헤어진(the rent, 벌어진 틈) 것을 깁지(고치지)않았다고 해서 아마 가장 드러날(betrayed) 흉(vice, 결격)은 무심함 정도 일 것이다.

I sometimes try my acquaintances by such tests as this;—who could wear a patch, or two extra seams only, over the knee?
나는 때로 주변사람들에게 누가 꿰멘 옷과 무릅을 던댄 바지를 입을 수 있는지 물어보곤 한다. (who could wear... 누가 감히, 당당히, 부끄럼 없이..의 느낌이 있다. 이어진 문장을 보자)

Most behave as if they believed that their prospects for life would be ruined if they should do it.
대부분 그들은 만일 그런(깁거나 덧댄)옷을 입는다면 마치 인생의 전망이 다 무너져 버릴 것이라고 믿는 듯이 행동한다.

It would be easier for them to hobble to town with a broken leg than with a broken pantaloon.
찢어진 바지보다 부러진 다리를 질질끌며 다니(hobble)는 편이 쉽다고 생각한다.

Often if an accident happens to a gentleman’s legs, they can be mended; but if a similar accident happens to the legs of his pantaloons, there is no help for it; for he considers, not what is truly respectable, but what is respected.
흔히, 신사의 다리에 사고가 나면 치료를 할 것이다. 하지만 바지의 다리에 변고가 생기면 내버려 둔다. (영문과 한글의 수동형 자동형 문장차이, 단어의 활용 happen to...) 왜냐면(for..로 시작하는 문장, 이유의 접속사) 그는 (자기가, 자동형 문장)진심으로 중요하다고 생각 하는 것보다, (남들이, 수동형 문장)중요하다고 여겨지는 것을 우선하기(he consider...) 때문이다.

We know but few men, a great many coats and breeches. Dress a scarecrow in your last shift, you standing shiftless by, who would not soonest salute the scarecrow?
엄청난 코트와 바지(19세기 남자들 반바지, breeches)를 갖고 있는 사람이 약간은 있다. 허수아비에 직전에 입고 있던 옷(last shift)(shift:옷, 갈아입는 옷, 옷을 갈아입다)을 입혀 놓고 그 옆에 옷없이 서있다고 하면, 먼저 허수아비에게 인사하지 않을 사람이 있겠는가? (옷벗은 당신보다 잘차려입은 허수아비가 대접 받는다)

Passing a cornfield the other day, close by a hat and coat on a stake, I recognized the owner of the farm.
몇일전, 옥수수밭을 지나다가 그밭 주인이 있는 것을 봤다(recognize의 의미. "밭주인이 누군지 안다"라기 보다, "밭에 그 주인이 있었다는 것을 인지",  다음 문장 참조)

He was only a little more weather-beaten than when I saw him last. I have heard of a dog that barked at every stranger who approached his master’s premises with clothes on, but was easily quieted by a naked thief.
그는 지난번 봤을때 보다 더 (햇볕에)그을려 있었다. 주인의 땅에 들어오는 모든 옷입은 이방인을 향해 짓지만 발가벗은 도둑에게는 이내 조용히 하는 개의 짖는 소리를 들었다. (밭주인을 보고 다가 갔으므로)

It is an interesting question how far men would retain their relative rank if they were divested of their clothes.
만일 사람들(they)이 (강제로) 옷이 벗겨지면 그의 상대적 지위(평가)을 얼마 만큼 유지할 수 있을까 라는 재미있는 질문이 (떠오른다).
