[Day 33] Economy


Bankruptcy and repudiation are the spring-boards from which much of our civilization vaults and turns its somersets, but the savage stands on the unelastic plank of famine.

파산과 부도(repudiation, 지불거절)는 우리 문명의 대부분이 공중제비 묘기를 위해 튀어올라 (한바퀴)도는 구름판인(살아움직이는 경제) 반면 미개함은 힘없이(굶은) 탄력없는 판자(라고 할 수)있다. (civilization 과 savage, spring-board와 unelastic plank의 대비)

Yet the Middlesex Cattle Show goes off here with éclat annually, as if all the joints of the agricultural machine were suent.

하지만 미들섹스의 사육제(가축 쇼)는 농기계의 결합부위(the joints)가 모두 맞아 돌아가는(suent 영국 남부 방언, smooth) 듯이 매년 성대히(éclat 화려한) 열린다(go off with~로 떠나다).

The farmer is endeavoring to solve the problem of a livelihood by a formula more complicated than the problem itself.

농부는 생계(livelihood)의 문제를 풀려고 문제(생계)보다 더 복잡한 공식을 세우려 한다(열망이 있다).

To get his shoestrings he speculates in herds of cattle. With consummate skill he has set his trap with a hair springe to catch comfort and independence, and then, as he turned away, got his own leg into it.

그는 그의 신발끈(shoestrings, 약간의 돈)을 가지려고 가축(cattle, 소)떼에 투기한다(speculate in~). 안락함과 독립(자립)을 잡기위해 뛰어난(consummate) 재주로(솜씨좋게) 머리털 함정(hair springe, 덧의 종류인 듯) 덧을 놓고는 뒤돌아서 그안에 자기 발을 밀어 넣는 꼴이다. (잘난줄 알고 이리저리 꾀를 내보지만 결국 제 꾀에 빠지는 인간군상의 모습)

This is the reason he is poor; and for a similar reason we are all poor in respect to a thousand savage comforts, though surrounded by luxuries.

이것이 바로 그가 가난한 이유다. 그리고 비슷한 이유로 우리 모두가 주변의 사치로움(문명의 이기들)을 두고도 수천의 미개한 안락을 위해 기꺼이 가난뱅이가 된다.

As Chapman sings,

시인 채프먼이 이렇게 노래했다,

“The false society of men--
인간의 가짜(허황된) 사회

       -- for earthly greatness
      지상의 위대함(세속의 잘남)을 향한

All heavenly comforts rarefies to air.”
모두 허공에 흩어지는구나 (rarefy, 희박하게 하다)

And when the farmer has got his house, he may not be the richer but the poorer for it, and it be the house that has got him.

농부가 집을 갖게 되자 그는 부자가 되는게 아니라 그것 때문에 가난해 질 것이며, 집이 그를 집어 삼키게 되었다(the house has got him.).

As I understand it, that was a valid objection urged by Momus against the house which Minerva made, that she “had not made it movable, by which means a bad neighborhood might be avoided;”

내가 아는 바로는 미네르바가 만든 집에 대하여 모무스가 나쁜 마을을 피할수 있도록 집을 이동식으로 만들지 않았다며 유용한(valid, 확실한) 반론을 제기하였다(불평했다).

and it may still be urged, for our houses are such unwieldy property that we are often imprisoned rather than housed in them;

우리의 집이 그안에 머문다(housed)기 보다 갇힌(imprisoned) 꼴이되는 그런 거추장 스런(unwieldy) 자산으로 취급되고 있다(may still be urged, 여전히 촉구되고있다).

and the bad neighborhood to be avoided is our own scurvy selves.

그리고 피하고 싶은 나뿐 마을(이웃)은 우리 자신의 천한(scurvy) 자신이다. (이웃을 좋다 나쁘다 평하기 전에 자기 자신은 좋은 이웃 이었던가?)

I know one or two families, at least, in this town, who, for nearly a generation, have been wishing to sell their houses in the outskirts and move into the village, but have not been able to accomplish it, and only death will set them free.

거의 한세대 내내(a generation) 변두리의 집을 팔고 마을로 이사하려 했던 이 마을에 사는 가족 한둘을 알고 있다. 하지만 그들은 끝내 뜻을 이루지 못했고 죽음만이 그들을 자유롭게 할 것이다. (변두리 환경이 싫었던 모양이다. 결국 나뿐 마을이라며 평생을 불평으로 보내다가 끝남).
