이 사람(건축가)이 내게는 처마장식(cornice)에 집착하고(lean on, 기대고) 있고 그(건축가)보다 더 잘 알고 있는 교양없는(rude, 무례한) 점유자에게 그의 반쪽 진실을 소심하게(timidly) 속삭이는 것 처럼 보인다.
* 건축가들은 자기 집에 대해 더 이해가 깊은 집주인을 무식하다고 치부하고는 겉치장을 더 하라며 부추기고 있다.

내가 지금보고 있는 건축적 아름다움은 필요성과 단지 건축가에 불과한 거주자의 특성과는 상관없이(out of~) 그리고 몸에 밴(unconscious, 무의식적인) 정직함과 고귀함(의식적으로 정직한-truthfulness-척 고귀한-nobleness-척하지 않음)에 상관 없이(out of~) 외관을 고려하지 않은채 내부에서 바깥쪽으로 점진적으로 증축해 왔다(has gradually grown)는 것을 나는 알고 있다.

그리고 생산되도록 운명 지워진 이런 종류(장식적인)의 아름다움의 그 어떤것도 생활속에 녹아있는(unconscious) 아름다움의 추구 같은 것에 의해 지속될 것이다.

그리고 그들의 삶이 소박 할수록(as simple) 그리고 과장되지 않을(as agreeable to the imagination) 때 도시의 상자모양 집(suburban box)도 똑같이 흥미롭다(놀라움이 있다:바람직하다). 그리고 거주자의 주거 성향(style)에 따라(in the style of his dwelling) 다소(as little)의 치장(after effect)이 있다.

문학에도 양식의 치장에 관한 소동(ado)이 가해졌다면 그리고 성서 집필자(architect)가 교회 건축가 만큼 처마장식에 쏟은 만큼의 시간을 허비 했다면 어떻게 되었을까?
* 성서의 내용에 진실(교리)이 담기기 보다 미사여구로 가득 찼을 것이다.

(치장보다 본질에 집중하였기에) 순수문학(belles-lettres)과 순수미술(beaux-arts)이 생겨난 것이다.(문장이 좀 뜬금없이 이어지고 있다)
* 비유적인 표현, 생략 등을 많이 포함하고 있어서 상당한 의역, 국어문장 구사력이 필요했다. 부디 올바르게 이해했길 바란다. 토론하며 함께 읽으면 좋겠다고 바래본다. 그래서 대학에 가야겠다.
