The secretary of the Province of New Netherland, writing in Dutch, in 1650, for the information of those who wished to take up land there, states more particularly, that

“those in New Netherland, and especially in New England, who have no means to build farm houses at first according to their wishes,
뉴 네덜란드에 살던, 특히 뉴 잉글랜드에 살던 사람들은 처음부터 그들의 의도대로(according to their wishes) (집을)지을 방법이 없었기에,
dig a square pit in the ground, cellar fashion, six or seven feet deep, as long and as broad as they think proper,
지하창고 처럼, 6~7피트(2미터가량) 깊이로, 마음에 들만큼(as they think proper) 넓고 길게 반듣한 네모(square pit, 구덩이)를 파고,
case the earth inside with wood all round the wall,
흙을 섞은(넣은) 나무를 전벽면에 바르고,
and line the wood with the bark of trees or something else to prevent the caving in of the earth;
나무껍질이나 흙이 무너져 내리는 것(caving, 무너져 내리다, cave, 동굴) 방지할 만 한 뭐든 가지고 나무로 안을 댓다(lined 안을 대다; line, 선, 줄을대다).
floor this cellar with plank, and wainscot it overhead for a ceiling, raise a roof of spars clear up, and cover the spars with bark or green sods,
판자로 마루 깔고(floor), 천장을 높여 벽면을 붙이고(wainscot), 날개보(각재, spars)를 띄어 지붕을 올리고, 껍질과 놀색 떼(sod, 잔디)깔아 날개보를 덮었다.
so that they can live dry and warm in these houses with their entire families for two, three, and four years,
그리하여 2,3, 혹은 4년간 전 가족이 이런 집에서 따숩고 건조(습지의 질척함을 피하고, 습하지 않게)하게 잘 수 있었다.
it being understood that partitions are run through those cellars which are adapted to the size of the family.
벽면(partitions, 분할면)은 가족의 크기에 맞게 이 지하창고를 누볐다. (가족의 수에 맞게 분할 벽을 쳤다)
The wealthy and principal men in New England, in the beginning of the colonies, commenced their first dwelling houses in this fashion for two reasons;
이 식민지(뉴 잉글랜드 지방)의 초기시절에 부유층과 지도층(이주해온 사람들중 부자나 관리들도 있었다) 사람들은 그들의 거주장소도 이와 비슷한 형식으로 시작(commence)했는데 두가지 이류가 있었다.
firstly, in order not to waste time in building, and not to want food the next season;

이렇게 3~4년 지나면서 시골은 농업이 정착되어 갔을(became adapted to) 때, 그들(유력자)은 그들은 수천금을 들여 스스로의(관공서가 아니다) 예쁜 집을 지었다.
In this course which our ancestors took there was a show of prudence at least, as if their principle were to satisfy the more pressing wants first. But are the more pressing wants satisfied now?
좀더 시급한 부족을 (먼저)만족시켜야 한다는 것이 그들의 기준이었을 것 같은 최소한의 근면의 증표가 있다. (저 이야기가 일의 선후를 알고 있었던 것 같다.) 그런데 더 급박했다던 것이 지금은 해소 되었을까? (말은 급박한 것이라고 해놓고 여전히 해소되지 않고 있는 것은 어인 일인가? 부족이 해소되지 않았는데 못참고 유력자들은 예쁜 집을 지었다. "그들의 예쁜집": 사저가 아니더라고 결국 자기들이 머물 청사와 관사를 짖는데 많은 돈을 낭비했다-spending on-)
When I think of acquiring for myself one of our luxurious dwellings, I am deterred, for, so to speak, the country is not yet adapted to human culture, and we are still forced to cut our spiritual bread far thinner than our forefathers did their wheaten.
내 자신의 호화스런 거주지 하나를 획득하려고 생각 했을 때, 말하자면, 아직 인간의 문화(인간이 살만한 수준)가 적착되지 않았기 때문에 차단 당했다(be deterred. 할 수 없었다) 그리고 우리 아버지들이 밀로만든 것으로 그랬던 것처럼 우리는 여전히 우리의 정신적 빵을 얇게 썰도록 강요 받고 있다.

Not that all architectural ornament is to be neglected even in the rudest periods; but let our houses first be lined with beauty, where they come in contact with our lives, like the tenement of the shellfish, and not overlaid with it.

But, alas! I have been inside one or two of them, and know what they are lined with.

Though we are not so degenerate but that we might possibly live in a cave or a wigwam or wear skins to-day, it certainly is better to accept the advantages, though so dearly bought, which the invention and industry of mankind offer. In such a neighborhood as this, boards and shingles, lime and bricks, are cheaper and more easily obtained than suitable caves, or whole logs, or bark in sufficient quantities, or even well-temperedclay or flat stones. I speak understandingly on this subject, for I have made myself acquainted with it both theoretically and practically. With a little more wit we might use these materials so as to become richer than the richest now are, and make our civilization a blessing. The civilized man is a more experienced and wiser savage. But to make haste to my own experiment.
